You can also shake them and put them down and they'll hatch, but they tend to have a scrambled brain and end up being idle and slow. If you throw your Chao at the wall they end up being erratic, meaning their performance can shift between subpar to outstanding, and they don't take well to abuse, Chaos that have been broken out of their shells start off scared, you can tell because once they're out of their shell they're instantly shaking, confused, and scared until given care, like food, or petting. Chaos that have been broken from their shells tend to be clingy to their caretakers, taking on the appearance of the character and drawing their likeness much sooner. If the Chao is abused it will have no connection to the player and it won't have the will to grow, it won't even draw itself. Abused Chaos tend to die, whereas tenderly cared ones tend to reincarnate.
If you let the egg hatch on its own and care for the Chao it will become independent. When a Chao is broken or shook into hatching they tend to have a dependency upon the player, so when the player shows affection the Chao will follow them when close enough, and will beg them for food. Whereas an independent Chao will get fruit for itself, and even though you may form a strong bond with it it will choose to draw itself because of its newfound independence, even if it takes on your character's physical appearance it will continue to draw itself.
If you give your Chao light fruit the only thing it will affect is its performance in races (or battles in Sonic Adventure 2). Good Chaos tend to let others win or end up dealing less damage in battles, whereas evil Chaos are more competitive and like to play dirty. They don't tend to play well with neutral or good chaos, which is why in Sonic Adventure 1 you have the different gardens but merely for storage and seperation, in Sonic Adventure 2 they give you different gardens to store different Chao that provide respective fruit according to the area's theme.
However, this is where where things get interesting.
If you have a good Chao that was shaken to hatch it will have no defined moral compass, it will act neutral, and is occasionally confused when put in the light garden, but only occasionally, it still tends to prefer the light garden or neutral, it just doesn't fully understand the place it is in. This is just as applicable to evil Chaos. In fact, this is the one way you can get an evil Chao to interact in a friendly manner with a good Chao, you can even get them to breed and make an even more confused Chao. This only works in Sonic Adventure 2, in the first one it does nothing special, but basically you can make a Chao that has a family dynamic like there's a divorce and he can visit his dad in hell on the weekends, and the Chao doesn't know if it likes its dad or its mom more. You can take it a step further and abuse that Chao, making its brain triple scrambled. This makes the Chao aggressive, confused, depressed, uninspired, it doesn't want to play, and it will even hit it's own parents. These Chao tend to die faster.
Now that I look back on it, a majority of their coding was put into the Chao gardens. 0_0

That was a unicorn, there's 3 of each type of animal, for mythicals its a dragon, unicorn, and phoenix, for... I don't know spooky (I think it's called ghost but none of these things ARE GHOSTS) it might be called it's a bat that makes your chao float, a skeleton dog which lets your chao wear hats, and a fishman that turns the ball floating on its head into fire.
The Lobby song is actually using a sample that says “With the biggest request in all manner of things.” So, uh, “With the, With the big-est request.” No sucking involved, sadly.

The black bars are put there because these cutscenes used special effects that are pre rendered. In Dolphin emulator you can see that if you play on widescreen the effect doesn't stretch all the way. So when Sega made the HD version, they were way too lazy to make new effects so they just put black bars there. I mean they didn't bother fixing the dog shit lip syncing and audio mixing.
