    Very similar to a Pinecil in many ways, but not less expensive. Glad this type of iron is becoming more common.

    the problem with these c210 irons is that you need a "high" current 5a power supply @10v-12v as the tip resistance is ~2ohm

      @davadoff Місяць тому

      JBC C210 is 40W rated. By my calculations, 9v would be optimal (4.5A).

    The "specifications" on the Aliexpress sales page states: "Maximum power: DC12V/6A or more C210 heating core up to 72W".
    It is not going to be easy to find a USB-C PD power supply that is rated at more than 3A at 12V. Typically, 5A is only supported at 20V.
    Whether it is going to become a problem (foldback/shutdown) in daily use, is another question. But in general, it's not a good idea to rely on being able to safely draw twice the rated current.

    Neat little thing, good review too. I have a question for others in the comment section, does the price double to 40$ when you click on the link to aliexpress for you? It does for me. Even more funny, after that, similar item from other sellers (same thing really) takes a price hike to 70$

    Is the soldering cartridge tip grounded to the UCB-C Shell/shield in any way, directly or via a resistor? Otherwise there could be a considerable risk of ESD damage to the parts being soldered, given the typical leakage of switching USB power supplies.

    • @jaro6985
      @jaro6985 3 місяці тому +1

      Grounding to the shell doesn't help, since the shell isn't earthed on most USBC type supplies anyway. It could even make it worse. You'll have to use a custom cable or PSU or crocodile clip to properly earth it.

    • @davadoff
      @davadoff Місяць тому

      JBC C210 tip is connected to the middle contact, internally. So from video it looks like PCB ground will be connected to the tip (perhaps USB 0v is connected to tip). Better to use battery power for USB irons, though.

    • @mortenhattesen
      @mortenhattesen Місяць тому

      @@jaro6985 it would be fairly trivial to add a separate ground lead to the same location where the ESD wrist strap is wired. But if the tip is not connected to shield/cabinet, that would be impossible. Hence the question.

    It says it works with the 245 cartridges, is that true? I'm curious to see if it can hit the claimed 70+ watts because it also doesn't mention what the max power is on 20V or if it's even actually capable of running at 20V on USB PD power.

    • @mortenhattesen
      @mortenhattesen 4 місяці тому

      I noticed the same claims on the Aliexpress sales page. But there is no way a T245 cartridge would fit that iron. I guess the electronics design is probably compatible with T245@20V but it would definitely require a new shell/enclosure
