Antique Radio Collection : Buying From An Auction House

- I decided to buy a lot of radios... a complete antique radio collection in one go. In fact, this was part of the remains of one mans collection that I was buying from an auction house in Dorset, in the deep south west of England. The original owner had died and in the usual fashion the family were clearing out his shi.. Stuff. The original auction made thousands and this was part of an extra batch that was found afterwards and put up for sale.
I made several bids on different lots and won some of them. This video is a quick look at the journey, the stuff I got and the aftermath which put me in hospital!
Hi George, hope you are feeling a lot better now. What a collection to savour and renovate! Loved the whole video mate! Rich
Brilliant haul George and thanks for the cautionary tale. I think most of us would have been caught out by the white powder. Glad your OK now!
one of those things Victor. If it had only been a single radio I probably wouldn't have been affected but because it was so many in a short time it got me! Auctions are dangerous places!
I really enjoyed your vlog George, it was awesome and I couldn't believe the wall of radios you bought! Can't wait to see in future videos.
I'm so sorry you got an adverse reaction, how scary for sure, but glad you are on the road to recovery.
Yep, it's one drama after another! I do have some live stuff to get on with for sure
Glad you are back George. Look after your self. 👍👍
Thanks 👍 I will be wearing gloves and a mask to clean all these sets off before they see the workbench.
Good to see you back, George. Sorry they dusted you with toxics, but it looks like you're on the road to recovery.
Great Haul , George ! Glad your feeling better , maybe a video on cleaning off the toxic radios .
That would be a video for sure
That was quiet an adventure. I am so glad that everything worked out for you. Now you have ample radios for multiple videos to last well into the future. That was one amazing radio haul you pulled off. Congratulations on the massive collection. now, keep those videos rolling my friend.
A fair few. Sure I paid good money but 30% of what I had to pay was auction fees! There should be some nice stuff coming up in the future.
Hurrah. ..George is back..👏
Yep, back to bother everyone and drive them mad!
That's a Lot of radios in both senses of the word! Nice one and a few Hackers in there.
Glad you have recovered George look forward to the forth coming videos looks like you have some intertesting stuff there
There is certainly one or two very nice valve sets and a nice rarer Hacker in there too.
Glad you are okay now George!
Soon you will have to start bringing radios in the house, on the kitchen table....LOL
I don't dare do that because I have stuff on the dining table already!
Always carry a box of latex or nitrile gloves with you on pickings. Better safe than sorry. Nice haul of antique radios. Looking forward to seeing them fixed!
Glad you are OK now. Had us all worried for a few hours!
You know me Dom, always some blooming drama or another...
Holy moly. George! So glad to see you back, but so sorry to hear what happened! That is very good advice sir. Even so though, holy crap man, what a haul! Dang I am lucky to find a radio reasonable once a year. You have projects now for a long time. Congratulations!
This was only a very small part of what the guy had collected over the years. They sold of thousands of sets a couple of months ago and this was part of another two storage containers that they found later after the original sale! In total they estimate that the guy had collected almost 5000 radios of all ages.
That's awesome George, great find man!
So sorry to hear what happened to you but am glad your doing okay now. Good advice about using gloves on stranger radios. You sure did get a lot of radios, I guess the wife must have been out of town for the weekend. 😆 I know if I came home with a car load of radios like that I would be shot on sight. Nice video! Looking forward to the repair videos, with gloves of course. 👍👏🏻❤️📻
The wife has given up on my madness. I have bagged them all and they are stored outside in the tin shed for now. Slowly they will make their way inside after a thorough cleaning.
Wow George you aren't kidding Bloody Hell! what are the odds of pesticide being on the Auction radios. Glad they found out what it was. I should say you will have a lot of work on those radios and videos. That car of yours is amazing it got all of that inside it. Thanks and glad to see you George.
Over here we do have a lot of issues with woodworm and usually a one off radio wouldn't be an issue. I think it was the large quantity that got me, most people wouldn't be dealing with that size of a possible infestation. I love the car, its a ltd edition sports version too so appeals to the teenager in me as well as sensible old man that I sort of am!
I always thought radio restorations should come with danger pay 😊
Get well mate.
One of those things.... At least I had a night out during lockdown!
Great to see and hear from you again George!!!
Keep in mind, that pesticide stuff is all over the place in your car too!!! Hope you use mask...heck, use an Haz-Mat suit...to clean the car out. Don't want you sick again!!!
I am really looking forward to videos on the "Valve" type radios...especially if they are wood cases!
Any idea of when you will have another one out?
I plan to take it to the local Romanian car valet place in town...
Bloody hell! Glad you’re okay, who would have expected that?
The honest answer was that I did not even consider it a problem. Now, I will be a touch more careful with strange white powders and especially in large quantities. I guess if it was one radio it wouldn't have affected me but the number of sets multiplied the dose.
Omg ! would you believe it ! Glad your okay now George.
Yep, all recovered now Harvey
@@GeorgeChristofi That's good George mate.
Its great to see you back some really nice radios there . Really Looking forward to the restoration project's . We need more of your Russian doppelganger. Talking of our conrad. A bit of a coincidence there ( suspicious wight powder on the radios owner pops his clogs umm) I wonder what the post mortem results were of the last owner who died .sounds like a Agatha Christie plot .seriously though glad your ok and up and running again.kind regards shaun
Whio knows if his wife had got fed up with all that 'old junk' lying around the house?!!
Nearly bid on some of those lots myself, but settled on an Ultra Coronation Twin that was more local. Thanks for the warning and I'm sorry that you had that experience with the insecticide, which was presumably to treat woodworm. You do know that one of the side effects is to turn the next six month's worth of hair grown green? :-)
It was amazing how little some of the valve lots went for. My most expensive lot was the Hacker transistor sets but there was a rarer White Sovereign 2 in there that I spotted. The rest look run of the mill but will sell for enough to pay for the keepers.
@@GeorgeChristofi I'm looking forward to some ace restoration videos from you, George. Well done for rescuing these sets from being used for ghastly "up-cycling" projects.
At least you're back in the land of the living. They must have cost a packet George
Not too much, the kicker is 30% to the auction house on top, along with the VAT.
@@GeorgeChristofi 30% + VAT? That's taking the ....
@@spankysmp most auction houses are 18-23%. Just reflects in the sale price really. Normally I'd pay 25 for something but I'd only pay 20 there.
05:05 An HRO Mmmm Ooooo /
Sorry about your poisoning, perhaps the BBC Mystery Theater Could put on a play on how the deceased radio collector relatives actually poison him to get his money before he changed the will, but thanks to George who was instrumental in discovering the murder because of his sickness from the poisoned radios.
The HRO is destined for another UA-camr who will no doubt give it plenty of love. I like the idea of the BBC mystery theatre play!
Hi George, now tell us about the sponsorship deal with Duracell Batteries.
Ohh... not Duracell, but maybe Energiser!!
@@GeorgeChristofi Definitely not Duracell, unless you're running a Leak amplifier ;-)
@@GeorgeChristofi But what about the copper coloured top?
@@richardturton6900 Might have to go green for the environment!
I have to ask the question: Did you get enough radios? ha ha :-D
I'm sorry you became ill, but happy that you are mending :-)
Yes that chemical sounds bad, yes gloves and a soaking towel to slowly wipe each radio down.
Stick the mask on.
it looks like you are going to have things to tinker with for a loooooooooooong time lol :-D.
I could have got more lots had I wanted to but as it was... it just fit into the car nicely so would not have got much more in.
@@GeorgeChristofi Hmm a trailer or old horse box would be.. no no your misses would strangle you lol.
@@zx8401ztv Its a case of storage once it gets here, not so much the getting hold of them....
“The car is loaded up” not half!
Just a little load!
Can I interest you in a lorry? Lol
