Beetlejuice narrates his back story in Italian. In the first movie when he meets the Maitlands he offers to cook them food and says "hope you like Itallian."
And of course Dolores is played by Monica Bellucci, who is Italian. So whether that came because Burton is dating her and wanted her in, or the fact that she is Italian and those bits in the first movie gave him the idea to use the first wife in the story and have her play the wife because she happens to be Italian, who knows, but it seems a bit too much to be a mere coincidence. For all we know the whole idea for this movie could have started because she is Italian. I could imagine a discussion between Burton and Bellucci with Burton doing something like joking that maybe Bellucci's ancestor was the one who had been married to Beetlejuice, then he starts thinking that she could play that character because she is an actress, then... 😄 Well, then the rest of the story almost pushes Dolores out and doesn't give her all that much to do, but he keeps her in just because she was the seed for the story. Okay, that thought amuses me mostly because so many people are complaining her being in the movie, and think Dolores exists in the first place just because Burton wanted to give her a role. But what if she was the reason he started to think making the movie in the first place, and without her there never would have been a second Beetlejuice movie? I know, just speculating, but as said I find that possibility amusing.

@trinaq Oh, I learned the write off was tim burtons nightmare way to die,so that's why they put him in. Plane crash, nearly drown, just to be eaten by a shark.😂😅😮
SPOILER ALERT The introduction of “baby Beetlejuice” can also be a reference to the Beetlejuice Animated series during the episode “Critter sitter”when Beetlejuice turns into a baby and causes havoc for Lydia.
Watched this today with the 2Ds 19&15 and I was delighted Burton kept the film so close to the original in feel. He could have gone CGI crazy but kept the animatronics, modelling and make up effects to the fore of the film. A funny and respectful sequel with many many Easter eggs
My sister and I, both over 55 yrs old, caught Don Cornelius and his Soul Train immediately. I'm sure all the young people under 50 had no idea what that callback was. We laughed like hell...lol
There was also a blink and you'll miss it nod to Catherine O'Hara's character Moira Rose from Schitt's Creek. When Lydia goes to meet her mother at the art gallery you see a few of Delia's pieces. Namely one when she's seen standing against a white canvas with her arms stretched out as a video of crows are projected on her.
One of the titles WB wanted to name the first movie was “House Ghosts” before Burton getting to keep the name he wanted for the movie “Beetlejuice” In the sequel, Lydia’s paranormal investigation TV show she hosts is called “Ghost House” Could this be a nod to the first movies original title?
1) Even though it was referenced, to be specific, the opening model town showed the car upside down in the river. 2) I remember a recent interview where Catherine O Hara mentioned that she was glad to reunite with the original cast, then she mentioned about glad to still be alive and who hadn't ruined their career. At first I thought it she was talking about Alec Baldwin and the Rust incident, however I searched why Jeffrey Jones wasn't returning and realized she was referring to him....
While I was surprised that Charles Deetz, the character, was in the movie more than I thought, I don’t think it’s too distracting. For me I was able to separate the character from the actor and just thought of the character and how his death impacted his family, especially Delia.
I agree, still having the actual characters presence didn’t bother me much, either. I like his minor comedic appearances, but I’m totally down with killing the character off the way they did.
I appreciate Tim Burton (and Tom Selick's) stop motion so that sequence was much appreciated. The costume and makeup is very much what I expect from Beetlejuice so the extra gross parts were just great. It was a nice way to distance from the actor while the creatives get to remind people that Charles Deetz belongs to the Beetlejuice universe. They can do what they want with him and rip off his head while still keeping him relevant. Cause... I don't want that actor back and I feel more comfortable saying Beetlejuice's name three times than saying his name once. Otherwise I'm just gonna get a bad taste in my mouth. Who wants that? Nobody.
Lots of references to modern art too - mostly depicted as Delia ripping off other artists' styles. A couple I remember - the two halves of her body suspended in formaldehyde at her art show are a reference Damian Hirst's "Mother and Child Divided," and draping the house in fabric is a reference to Christo.
Is it just me or did the Delores plot seem a bit of an after thought. I kinda wish the murder house was brought in earlier and explored more. Astrid's friend would have made a better villain arch than Delores. Could have spent a bit more time in the actual model like before. They didn't seem to spend much time in the house either, other than the attic... I loved the acting and of course the signature look and feel from Tim Burton. Glad they still incorporated the stop motion animation and the dead husband being eaten by a shark was great. A lot of positive from the film but the first 40mins seemed a bit "meh".
Astrid's friend and Rory make two excellent villains. Delores was not utilized well but she's an excellent character. She does feel like an afterthought. But we had enough with the murder house and Rory trying to manipulate Lydia. Those two together were enough to let Beetlejuice cause chaos and once again have the audience asking "am I supposed to hate him, because I like the weird chaotic poltergeist demon". Delores would have been excellent for Beetlejuice three. In which Lydia and Astrid have to save Beetlejuice from his terrifying ex and we focus entirely just on Beetlejuice's backstory. Rory and the murderhouse take away from just how terrifying Delores is. Her entrance is great. The backstory is a lovely throwback to Italian horror films. She's a good actress, what little we see of her, and she is scary. The "deaths" are very Tim Burton dark comedy/horror. But it's so much in one movie. It's a "kill your darlings" moment. Delores deserved a solo film. Rory and the murder house needed the sequel. Delores needed her own movie for revenge. And that's how I'm gonna stick to it.
@@jamie1602 definitely how i felt. It makes me wonder how much was cut for this, because this movie was much shorter than I expected. Granted, it could have been that way to keep it fast paced like its prequel.
I don't think she was an afterthought... I think it was a leftover from the original script. I think it was the original base for the idea of the sequel and then it evolved but they didn't trim the fat. Someone liked the idea too much to let it go when it no longer had any purpose to the story. The other two main story lines tie together while the one originally introduced almost completely disappears. Hence, why I believe it was the original base that wasn't cut. I also didn't like that origin story as I thought he was always a ghoul and not a true ghost. So, it just made less sense. It's one of those examples of failed Hollywood screen writing .
I feel like no one is talking enough about how Beetlejuice pinned after Lydia for decades. I think he cares more than he let's on. He could have tried to find another clairvoyant to marry for his goal, but he didn't.
Another hint that Jeremy was a bad guy was the book which he was reading. It was "Crime and Punishment" by Dostoevsky, where the protagonist killed an old woman with an axe. Jeremy also killed his father, wich is also shown with an axe in his head.
There was Corpse Bride Easter egg, there was blue robber guy getting photographed and it was the same guy with the decapitated head that appeared in the animated movie.
Honestly Corpse Bride and the Beetlejuice movies would make a really good triple feature since they kinda share similar DNA. Infact given that the Beetlejuice films established that the afterlife is nothing but bureaucracy; I wouldn't be surprised if the afterlife has a division that monitors the living brining back the dead given that Burton does have a few films where characters bring the dead back to life.
Yes, but they did one of those graves with the departed's face on it. So while they have him running around the after life without a head, and had someone else doing the voice, the actor's face is still in the movie.
I forgot that Tim Burton also directed a Batman film. It makes a lot more sense now why Danny DeVito would be in the sequel, since he played The Penguin, and both he and Michael Keaton were in Dumbo.
That's a little funny. Since Burton and Keaton directing Batman the next year did go hand in hand with Beetlejuice in 1988. No offense but they are always so synonymous that it's hard to not know.
During the opening sequence when it went over the river, it looked like the Maitlands were trying to climb out of it. Small detail I noticed, but since it was in the theatre, I couldn't rewind or pause to confirm.
Another thing people might miss: the Musical's subplot of Lydia's birth mother is debunked. In the new movie, she clearly states that she's still alive somewhere. The information about what happened to the Maitland's was so quick and brief I almost didn't catch it. She never really tells us what that loophole is, that let them move to the Great Beyond.
One of my favorite moments is when Delia is telling Lydia, "Where's that annoying goth girl who got on my nerves all those years ago? You need to FIND her again!" It showed that, after all this time, Delia really had come to like Lydia, and she was encouraging her to BE her REAL SELF. Which is what parents SHOULD do. I was really shocked when they killed Delia out of nowhere. After both Lydia's father AND Lydia's ex-husband dead, Lydia's step-mom getting killed felt like too much.
Saw Beetlejuice Beetlejuice today, really enjoyed the similarities to the first movie. Surprised by the amount of gore and blood, had funny moments and all round fun movie 👍💯
Did anybody catch the Schitts creek reference. We see Catherine O’Hara in front of a backdrop with crows all around her. This is a reference to her movie in Schitts creek, the crows have eyes. 🤣🤣🤣
Here’s a fun little Easter egg, you can hear the song Margaritaville by Jimmy Buffett in the background as Danny DeVito is playing the part of the janitor, before he dies.
Also, there's an episode of It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia which also stars Danny DeVito in which the gang was supposed to go to a Jimmy Buffet concert.
Baby Beetlejuice in a way was a nod to Edward bloom’s birth in Big Fish. There was also a piano part in the score that was reminiscent of the piano part playing in Pee Wee’s Big Adventure (when Pee Wee goes to Francis’s house to confront him during his bath time) This film had Tim Burton’s imprimatur all over it
Beetlejuice's head shrunk at the end of the 1st movie, so at first I thought Bob was some sort of body double for him. Haven't really figured that out yet
I recognized Danny Devito immediately and Delores reattached her ring finger in the same scene where she reattached her other body parts. But anyway, I loved the movie, it was really fun.
As I watched Deloris stapeling herself togeatger, I immediately thought of Sally from Nighmare Before Christmas sewing herself back togeather. I have no doubt that was an Easter Egg...
I'm surprised this video didn't find a way to slip in the thinly veiled reference to Alec Baldwin's legal trouble by stating he doesn't appear because of a "loophole."
One thing the movie hasn't explained after all these years is why, if heaven and hell exist in this world, why most of the dead souls are stuck between what is apparently purgatory and the houses in which they died. And there's more. When Adam and Barbara found their "loophole," did they get to go to heaven? Why did Delia get to board the train less than an hour after dying? And if Jeremy was a murderer, how was he able to avoid going to hell for over two decades?
It seems that it just takes SO LONG. First there's that 125 year haunting wait, and then there's the endless queues, and it looks like one of their definitions of suicide is "Doing something so stupid that you were just asking to get killed" as the Actor/Cop actually performed a stunt with what he KNEW was a live grenade. With the queues, it looks like people are waiting for SO long that they give up their place and try to do it themselves. However, there IS the Soul Train, which takes you to your next destination, and we never really see what's after that.
@@Mikumo91 Lydia and the Deetz became their extended family and thus "the loophole". So they didn't have to haunt for the 100+ years. I do love that implication that the big family was a found family with Lydia being a daughter figure they were always hoping to have. I love the addition of the Soul Train and how the stops are multiple afterlife destinations. And I also just love how fun it is.
When Beetlejuice said he was going to make the ghost couple some food he said “I hope you like Italian” so that part is another nod to the Italian seen in the new movie.
I want my 11 minutes back. None of these were “missed”…And if his costume is James Dean then hers of “dying Marie Curie” was a clue that she was dying…Did you know the handbook is in the first movie? Did you know they have to draw a door on a wall to get to the other side? Like cmon quite obvious if you have actually watched the first movie.
being the Beetlejuice nerd that I am I missed none of these 10 things except the “shark” reference. But hey WatchMojo, here’s one big Easter Egg you might have missed: -The entire scene in which Beetlejuice tells the story of his past and how he met Dolores was all dubbed in Italian and given the aesthetics of this particular segment (& that it looks like something that came out of the movie Black Sunday) it’s pretty obvious that it’s a homage to Italian Horror Director Mario Bava. This can be confirmed later in the movie when Lydia herself admits to being a Bava fan and that she met Astrid’s father in a Mario Bava movie festival.
I did pick up on all of these. BUT When Jenna Ortega said “Death is hard, living is harder” this is similar to the quote from Twilight. When Bella said, “Death is peaceful… easy. Life is harder.” There are sources floating around that Jenna Ortega is gonna be the next Bella in the upcoming Twilight release. I feel like Jenna dropped this quote in the movie to poke at Twilight fans.
Lol as soon as she said it I was like wait is she phrasing twilight now ? Also didn't Jenna Ortega play Wednesday in the latest Adams family ? Her Wednesday dolls are def sought after esp in the USA
Something you may have missed, since you didn’t bring it up when talking about the musical is that Lydia’s mom isn’t in fact dead. Lydia mentions that during her conversation with Delia about Astrid and Lydia’s struggles with her and their relationship back when Lydia was a teen. Delia claimed to have tried to fill in for Lydia’s “dead mother” and Lydia reminded her that her mom wasn’t dead.
Loved the movie, but now I see a possible continuity error--don't ya hate it when that happens? "I always said if I ever did it, I was gonna do it once..."--he did it centuries earlier, with Delores! But--you can make that work--though I don't for one second believe Burton had thought it out that far when making the eariler film, he probably did stop and think when writing this film, and decided it wasn't a problem. As it now plays, Beetlejuice is hesitant during the earlier wedding scene about breaking his vow to himself, which being Beetlejuice, he was obviously going to break at some point. Since he really wanted to marry Lydia, to get out of the Neitherworld for keeps, the only thing holding him back was his earlier marriage to Delores. Being Beetlejuice, takes him like two seconds to get past that hurdle. As retro-continuity goes--not bad.
He also has a collection of '90s CDs, and says he prefers physical media. I didn't give that a second thought, assuming he was just a "retro" sort of guy. But it makes perfect sense!
for me it was the Happy days reference. Any kid that grew up after the 90s likely doesnt know happy days at all. (astrid didnt) I am a 90s kid and watched it all the time on nick at night.
One thing alot of people dont mention is how this film gave me feeling of the cartoon how Lydia and BJ went to the Neitherworld together like they always did in the cartoon.
I mean, we're not even 30 seconds into this and you're pretending that a SINGLE PERSON could have watched the movie and MISSED the model town. You might as well make number one Beetlejuice. I mean, if you missed the model town, you didn't see the effin movie.
Exactly! What about Rory having to wear a horrible t-shirt in spite of all the stylish garments he usually has on. Isn’t that a hilarious reminder of Otho’s treatment from the original?
Not a callback to the original, but I was really psyched to see the dream sequence that was an homage to the 70s B horror 'It's Alive'. That was one of my earliest horror loves from childhood.
The dream sequence was mainly a homage to the 1976 movie Carrie as they used the opening theme music as well while also doing a nod to It's Alive with the Beetlebaby.
they couldn’t THO 😳 EVERYONE pretty much wouldn’t BE there 😔 they would HAVE to do it SOON 😱 if they were gonna do a 3rd which I HOPE it’s TRUE 😊 because I WANT Lydia to end up with the ghost with the most 😏
I have to say, I had doubts about this sequel, but I'm more than happy to say ~ it delivers and is very entertaining to watch! Though ~ I seriously don't get the song in the musical sequence ~ especially with two different versions of the same song used!
That's awesome that you came to the same conclusion that I did about Bob the Goon being Bob in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice first he gets betrayed by his boss the Joker then he gets betrayed by his boss Beetlejuice I guess technically it's a theory but it just works so well
In OG Beetlejuice when he is summoned to save the Maitlands, first thing he does is approach the Deetzs. They are embracing each other out of fear of the ghost. Beetlejuice hands Charles a pair of Copperhead snakes. In the sequel, Delia dies after being bitten by two copperhead snakes. Was he letting her know she was going to die way back then?
🛑Spoiler of the second movie🛑 I related that death more to the first movie, when they are moving in to the new house and one of Delia sculptures almost kills her she says: my art is dangerous I don't want to die by it, or something like that, and in the sequel what is the very thing that kills her? Her art
I was disappointed when at first when I found out that Jeffrey Jones wouldn't be returning for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice but after doing some research, I can definitely say that not bringing him back was for the best 🙁

Watched this today with the 2Ds 19&15 and I was delighted Burton kept the film so close to the original in feel. He could have gone CGI crazy but kept the animatronics, modelling and make up effects to the fore of the film. A funny and respectful sequel with many many Easter eggs
was the Sandworm CGI or was it Stopmotion? I couldn't tell.
@@Pally356 I think it was CGI but made to look like Stopmotion. Just speculation.
My favorite nod is not from the original but an ode to the 70s. Don Cornelius is a ghost train conductor. Loved it.
My sister and I, both over 55 yrs old, caught Don Cornelius and his Soul Train immediately. I'm sure all the young people under 50 had no idea what that callback was. We laughed like hell...lol

I was so sad
There was also a blink and you'll miss it nod to Catherine O'Hara's character Moira Rose from Schitt's Creek. When Lydia goes to meet her mother at the art gallery you see a few of Delia's pieces. Namely one when she's seen standing against a white canvas with her arms stretched out as a video of crows are projected on her.
I was hoping to see this comment! I bust out laughing in the theater and was surprised no one else did.
I turned to my cousin and mentioned this!!

One of the titles WB wanted to name the first movie was “House Ghosts” before Burton getting to keep the name he wanted for the movie “Beetlejuice”
In the sequel, Lydia’s paranormal investigation TV show she hosts is called “Ghost House”
Could this be a nod to the first movies original title?
I definitely think so
Lydia's biological mom is still alive in the sequel. it's mentioned in a conversation between Delia and Lydia on the house's front porch
The grenade thought to be fake that was live that killed the detective was a clear shot at Baldwin.
and deserved

Who thinks that the dress Delores takes from the afterlife dry cleaning shop and turns to black is actually Barbara Maitland’s original wedding dress?
That thought did occur to me.
No its totally not , could have been a cool idea but Barbara's style was very sub-dued , classic and old fashioned the one in this movie had a bodice.
It was to me before she turned it black.
The Phone Operator in Beetleguises office is the spitting image of Mother from the movie Pyscho
I am glad I am not the only one that noticed that nugget!
i came here to find this comment! My bf missed it and I was like HOW could you miss it!!!
Loved the backstory of the ring BJ had when he tried to marry Lydia
No but they show her finger in the 2nd film she reattaches it.
I think I spotted a minifigure in a wedding dress climbing out of the riverbank in the opening shot as well.
I would imagine O'Hara was referring to both Jones and Baldwin
The ring finger and Delores was so perfect.
Except it's a lie. She clearly reattaches her ring finger in the same exact scene.
@@Hugh_Jannis I’ll take your word for that until I rewatch it. You seem to be ahead of others on that.
@@Hugh_Jannis Tim Burton ruined this film... it's an abomition. I love beetlejucie... every single thing he did was wrong. Literally everything

The part when Astrid mentions the movie Scream to Jeremy in which her actress Jenna Ortega starred in.
if you saw the movie....give a shout out to "Bob"...
When William Dafoe’s character mentioned how a bomb blew up the side of his face. That seems like a Spider-Man Green Goblin reference 👀
And how he thought the bomb was a prop, much like Baldwin and the whole gun thing.
I could've sworn I saw Adam and Barbara as figurines in the opening credits.
I knew I saw that. I don't know why no one is mentioning that little cameo
Definitely saw the car in the riverbed
At 2:37 you can see them at the river bank
@@jamie1602 think you nailed it
@@jamie1602 definitely how i felt. It makes me wonder how much was cut for this, because this movie was much shorter than I expected. Granted, it could have been that way to keep it fast paced like its prequel.
@@jamie1602 Could have the stakes for Lydia be that Delores is targeting her out of jealousy.
He could have tried to find another clairvoyant to marry for his goal, but he didn't.
i kinda wanted them to actually get married in the sequel haha

Another hint that Jeremy was a bad guy was the book which he was reading. It was "Crime and Punishment" by Dostoevsky, where the protagonist killed an old woman with an axe. Jeremy also killed his father, wich is also shown with an axe in his head.
So happy that Michael Keaton reprised his role! He played that role so well ❤
he IS BeetleJuice 😌
There was Corpse Bride Easter egg, there was blue robber guy getting photographed and it was the same guy with the decapitated head that appeared in the animated movie.
Ah, Pàul, the head waiter
Honestly Corpse Bride and the Beetlejuice movies would make a really good triple feature since they kinda share similar DNA.
Infact given that the Beetlejuice films established that the afterlife is nothing but bureaucracy; I wouldn't be surprised if the afterlife has a division that monitors the living brining back the dead given that Burton does have a few films where characters bring the dead back to life.
There was never even a 1% chance of Jeffrey Jones returning
Yes, but they did one of those graves with the departed's face on it. So while they have him running around the after life without a head, and had someone else doing the voice, the actor's face is still in the movie.
There's a greater chance of Paul Reubens returning to his role as Pee-Wee than there is a chance of Jeffrey Jones returning in....anything.

That’s because Burton and Keaton notoriously hate the musical and want nothing to do with it, despite being invited to showings countless times.

This film had Tim Burton’s imprimatur all over it
Beetlejuice's head shrunk at the end of the 1st movie, so at first I thought Bob was some sort of body double for him. Haven't really figured that out yet
I actually never noticed any of these I am glad you made this video
Having that sculpture would be awesome
The Matlens car was still in the river and the Matlens were crawling out in the model I think it was the second time the camera went through it
I recognized Danny Devito immediately and Delores reattached her ring finger in the same scene where she reattached her other body parts.
Unfinished business. Delia had none, the Maitlands wanted a big family so they had to stay. Jeremy probably also had something that kept him there.

Did you know they have to draw a door on a wall to get to the other side? Like cmon quite obvious if you have actually watched the first movie.
I'm hoping that they'll continue the animated series after the success of this movie.
You missed something at the beginning of the credits. You can see a car crash and a couple crawling out of the ditch.
being the Beetlejuice nerd that I am I missed none of these 10 things except the “shark” reference. But hey WatchMojo, here’s one big Easter Egg you might have missed:
-The entire scene in which Beetlejuice tells the story of his past and how he met Dolores was all dubbed in Italian and given the aesthetics of this particular segment (& that it looks like something that came out of the movie Black Sunday) it’s pretty obvious that it’s a homage to Italian Horror Director Mario Bava.
She really needs to stop playing teenagers.
Jenna said it because it was written in the script
I cant confirm until i see it again, but if im not mistaken, i saw Barbara and Adam by the river during the opening fly over.
Delores has got to be my favorite character besides Lydia deetz
You forgot that they referred to Lydia's house as the Ghost House which is what they wanted to call the movie originally!

Not a callback to the original, but I was really psyched to see the dream sequence that was an homage to the 70s B horror 'It's Alive'. That was one of my earliest horror loves from childhood.
