  • Scanning black and white film can be tricky. In this video I will show you my approach to scanning B&W film with a flatbed scanner and the Silverfast software, so that you can digitalise your film and edit your photo in Lightroom or Photoshop.
    Did you see my latest book Volcanic Aotearoa New Zealand? It tells Māori legend stories of love and war between New Zealand’s volcanoes, it is a story of how I faced my fear of volcanic activity, and it shows my journey with film photography since 2019.

    Just bought an Epson V600 which now comes with an updated Silverfast 9..... brilliant.
    I was taking digital photos of my dad's old black and white photos from early 1900's which were so-so even when running them through Photoshop Elements but when i scanned them with the Epson, wow what a difference straight out of the box!
    Of course now i can scan all the old negatives black and white as well as colour and slides which is fantastic........

    Thanks for the video. To add to your 'basic kit' list... If you have film that's got grease/dirt/residue from commercial scans on it you'll need lighter fuel (that's pure petrol) and soft/lint-free wipes to clean up. This ensures a smear-free finish. For water-soluble dirt first clean with methylated spirits or pure alcohol then finish off with lighter fuel.

    Great video Stephen, Nice choice on the hasselblad! I hope it brings you even further than before with the mamiya 7. Thanks for the small guide on silverfast. I've just made the switch from epson scan and so far I quite like it! Good luck on that back operation, hope to see some video's of you shooting in the field soon again!

    Sad to see you leave the Mamiya 7 gang! Best of luck with your operation. Get well soon, and I hope to see more videos about the legendary Hasselblad. I don't like square format personally, maybe you can convince me otherwise.

    Stephen, I will have to assume that you've had your surgery at this time. I hope that all has gone well and that you've made it through recovery and PT successfully! And thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with scanning B&W negatives. I have a project involving about 2000 B&W 4x5 negatives of my fathers from the late '30s and early '40s as well as a sizable collection of 6x6 mounted Kodachrome Superslides taken all along the east coast of the United States. I am considering the latest version of Silverfast to go along with my Epson V750 (wish I could find an old Nikon 4500 film scanner) to handle the project, using wet mounting on the films that are of primary interest to me. We'll see how things go. And btw, I love your new camera! I still have my Hasselblad 500CM which I purchased new. I have the same Zeiss lens assortment that you have only the older Chrome lenses. Best of luck to you.

      @StephenMilner  3 роки тому

      Hi David, my surgery went well and I have fully recovered. I think Silverfast will do a great job at scanning your fathers B&W negative. I’m not sure if the V750 comes with a 4x5 holder, the V800 does but you could probably buy one on eBay if you don’t already have one. Another option to consider is scanning off a light table using a macro lens on a dslr and converting them using the Negative Lab Pro plugin for Lightroom. I have enjoyed using my Hasselblad, I have a review video on it coming out soon.
      Thanks for the message and good luck with you scanning.

    The 503CW looks mint and you have the 80mm f/2.8 CFE lens, just ordered the same lens. Looking forward to hearing what you think of the 503CW after using the Mamiya 7 for so long. Hope the Op goes well and must catch up soon for a coffee.

    • @StephenMilner

      It is in mint shape. I cleaned the focus screen, which was a bit tricky but apart from that it’s good to go. I got a 150mm cf lens as well. I have a 50mm cfi lens on the way too. When I can drive again we should catch up for sure.

    • @DarrylCarey
      @DarrylCarey 4 роки тому

      Stephen Milner I always remove the screen to clean it, but no matter how many times i clean it ... when I go to I shoot its covered in dust again

    • @StephenMilner
      @StephenMilner  4 роки тому

      Darryl Carey I got moisture inside the screen and had to dismantle the screen. It has a thin glass layer on top of the plastic focus screen and it’s held together by two frames.

    Great video, thanks. Do you use the multiple exposure function in you black and white scans? I have Silverfast 8.8 and for some reason the 16 bit scan feature doesn't show up in the drop down box. The only ones there are 16~8 and 16~1. Any idea how to fix that?

    • @StephenMilner
      @StephenMilner  2 роки тому

      Thank you 🙏 Sometimes, if I want to retain detail in the shadows. I always set is to 16bit for B&W in the top left menu.

  • @DarrylCarey

    The Epson V800 is not my favourite way to convert 35mm negatives, but for medium format nothing beats the V800 for top level scans.Still always do a quick convert with a Mirrorless camera first so I can pick the negatives I want to scan with the V800. How are you finding the Sekonic L-858D-U ?

    • @StephenMilner
      @StephenMilner  4 роки тому

      I’ve been shooting some 35mm film but haven’t scanned any yet. I have been getting my lab to do it for me. The meter is good but struggles in low light conditions. I have an old Luna SBC Pro that does a better job in low light but it reads 35 degrees instead of the 1 degree that you get on my Sekonic. I read the newer version had 3 more stops of light sensitivity so I may upgrade. Do you know anything about the newer version?

    thanks for the VTC Stephen.. Wondering if you have tried wet scanning and compared the focus. Also wondering how you determine which foot ledge on the tray is the sharpest setting. I just got back into scanning and trying to optimize the results. I too use a Hassey with the Epson 850. Also, why do you not include the Rebate of the film in your scan ?

    • @StephenMilner

      No worries. Haven’t tried wet scanning yet. I cannot get the Aztec scanning solution in NZ. Check out my video on how to setup your scanner for sharpness ✌️

    Quite informative video. Coming from a guy who hates scanners. Course I had to go thru that same process over and over agin several dozen times a day when digital cameras was not yet available. Or they had cost as much as a sports car. Other than that, I guess that Hasselblad is the right choice for you. Course too many times in your videos I saw a final image cut in a square from an 6x7 film...

    • @StephenMilner

      Thanks for watching and the comment. What type of scanner did you use back then? Yes, I feel a lot more happier now that I have moved to 6x6. I need to get use to the camera now though. Hopefully, it won't take me long.

       Stephen Milner Nikon coolscan 2000 was the star of the day, back in late 90's. Yep, the drum scanner (kill me I don't know the type) was much better, particularly with the slide film, but it was as expensive as a car. In comparison, that Nikon scanner was somewhat affordable, but you could yield good results only with negative film or B&W film processed in C-41 (Ilford XP2). In contrast, at least from my expiriance, scans from slide film & B&W was nothing short than terrible...
      BTW, if Hasselblad is too big trouble, maybe some much more affordable and automated Rolleiflex 6x6 cameras would suit you more. And all do those cameras are a bit cheaper, they are also harder to find these days than a Hasselblad...

    • @StephenMilner
      @StephenMilner  4 роки тому

      @@tomislavmiletic_ interesting, is the coolscan 9000 the final version of the 2000?
      Most of my work is doe during low light conditions so I prefer fully manual shooting with a light meter. Adjusting the position of the camera through waist level viewfinder is different to a rangefinder, although I have a prism finder for it.

      Tomislav Miletić For now I’ll be keeping the Hasselblad for my landscape work. I’m looking at getting a Voigtlander Bessa r2 for general shooting. I may get a Mamiya 6 in the future when I start to travel overseas.

    What kind of back operation are you getting if you don’t mind me asking? I’ve been dealing with back pain for 6 years or so now from a childhood of doing stupid shit, then I fractured my L2 in an accident. Been debating on whether or not it’s worth it to get surgery. Cheers!

      I have blown my S1 L5 disk and it has squashed my left sciatic nerve. The surgeon is doing keyhole surgery to remove the part of the disk that is squashing my nerve. Are you experiencing sciatica?
