    Michael. Thanks for putting these tapes on UTube. It is a wonderful and selfless act of sharing what most would never do. Although I have purchased these tapes, I appreciate the ease of replaying on U Tube. Thanks again.

      Chris, I really appreciate hearing from other martial arts instructors who enjoy my offerings. Hard style or soft style, it all comes down to being aware in the moment. Be well.

    I have dabbled with taiji off and on for a long time, under various teachers. A lot of the times, the teachers do not explain the reasons for the moves. As a result the exercise becomes seems pointless and then very soon boring. Your video puts taiji right in the right perspective - that taji is basically a form of self defence and combat. The seemingly pointless movements become totally meaningful, and students would find the moves meaningful. I think yours is the right way to teach taiji. Well done and thank you!

    You are really practical person because we need to know -how and why eachmove doing and slow motion explaining in details and who ever wants to go further deeper he can practise not only videos teach but real excercises.i appreciate your efforts and keep it up because im one of the people that like to understand before i do anything.and written respect to everyone it does make sense..this is logical to understand first. Thank you master michel

    Hi Michael. Enjoying your instruction. I have had a Aikido & WIng Chun background and have now been on the Tai Chi journey (intermittently now for a few years) as I wanted something deeper for the rest of my life and as I get older and not as strong as I used to be! Any advice for a person like me who loves the journey for truth and knowledge but trains alone due to time and financial reasons? Tai Chi just is so deep, beautiful and worthy of lifelong study!!

    Thank you very much for this video. It gave me a better understanding of your online course and I find the selection of applications to be more interesting here because they blend better into each other (e.g. the first Play the Fiddle with Brush Knee). Furthermore I could already correct some points I didn't understand as well as I thought, like the overall movement in Withdraw and Push, which the video made crystal clear. In fact, I have to restrain myself from watching all the series at once, because I think it would be counterproductive. One thing I'm curious about, is to see if I'm going to adopt these applications against those in the Grasp the Bird's Tail series (which I'm also very found of). I'll wait until the end to decide.
    Anyway, thank you very much for all your work and for sharing it. It's really unvaluable.

    To really learn tai chi, it is necessary to learn the martial applications behind the form. Then, you will know WHY you are doing a particular movement, and not just HOW to do it beautifully. Otherwise, you are learning taichi dancing.
    The health benefits will follow, whether or not you know the martial applications, but learning the martial applications will make it a lot more enjoyable as you fight with an imaginary opponent.

    Hi Michael Gilmam,
    I have started Tai Chi three days ago and so this is probably a really stupid question. On the single whip (Minute 22:18 in this video) the right foot has been turned in leaving the performer in what looks like a pigeon toed stance. It seems very unstable. What am I missing? I am trying to understand this in the context of what you showed in another set of your videos: “Yang Style Tai Chi Complete Leg Techniques - Lessons 1-9.”
    Thank you for your great videos and ability to make the material come alive!

    • @mdgilman
      @mdgilman  9 років тому +1

      +crseaquist When teaching a movement on video, one has to look at the movement step by step in slow motion. If you were to walk around in a tight circle, for instance, and did it in slow motion, at one point one would look un-natural. There is no problem with Single Whip done this way. It is a dynamic, flowing movement.

    32:12 White Crane Spreads Wings exists in many different styles of kung fu (e.g. Northern Praying Mantis, Long Fist, Tiger Crane) as well as Tai Chi. It is a defense against a simultaneous kick and punch. The splitting motion puts the opponent off balance and opens him up. Then you perform a kick with the left foot in the fast version of the Yang form. If you go behind your opponent, you can't perform this kick. I'm not sure who this guy learned the style from, but it wasn't a disciple of the Yang Family.

    • @bobfromdenison
      @bobfromdenison 6 років тому

      This movement also works well against a double punch. Used it in no-contact sparring with a Taekwondo guy. :-)

    very good explanations I studied the Chen Style with Ren Guan Yi and the Yang style with Moo chuan Jing know the short form +long form + sword. I learned in Chinatown NYC. I like how you explain the applications to the forms My teacher would show some but wouldnt fully explain them like you are doing now..Unfortunately the Sifus I studied with became 2 focused with the money.. Sifu Ren was all about it demanded $360 for 3 months upfront then raised it which is ridiculous and while very talented the ego not in control., Sifu Jing a great accupnucturist but started charging crazy fees at the behest of one of my younger brothers whom i brought into the school to cut people out instead of in.. Sad but true the greed getting in the way of the true spirituality and teachings.. I was saved by Jesus Christ the True master no1 brighter then he yes indeed.. that being said I enjoyed watching you video your straightforward and open in your teachings sharing to others for free. Ja Bless

      @CottonBoxer 8 років тому

      +Allen Franks another thing is you need to do more homework before making a decision on what you think u want to learn.
      if you don't do ur proper home work you will give $$ to a charlatan, and not even know it for a long timer or maybe never .
      you should learn what legit taijiquan is supposed to look like at the very least . then when u meet with them, you can go deeper to see what they feel like too. this will tell you if they are legit or not.
      a real taijiquan teacher/player has a very different feel to what they do than what you are used to. they can do this with ease too, ur cooperation is not needed . their softness will surprise you with the power they can generate . then u have a real teacher.

    Hey Michael Gilmore and Sifu John Considine,
    I have been studying off and on for 20 yrs via video tapes . I studied with Terry
    'Terrence Dunn in The Yang Style. I don't know the guy's name where I learned The Chen Style from. I plan on studying it for Health any Self Defense is a + . Do you do any supplementary Exercise for the Upperbody because you have Pretty Muscular Forearms , IF So What are they ? I was doing Zen Taiji from Jet Li and Michael Ma's Company ,but the directions ARE Repetitive All I learned in 3 days are 5 move and to keep my head up and let the head follow the movements .Calogero you do't do these movements that slow in a REAL FIGHT and you Don't to to kill your Training partner in instructional Video . Let me Guess,You're a BBJ ExpertTrophy winner and BeltHolder. I say that with respect but Lying on thr ground wanting someone to fit you on the street looks pretty silly.

    • @CottonBoxer
      @CottonBoxer 8 років тому +1

      +Neal Linville . neal, after all this time you should know enough to realize you need to find a legit teacher. yes, u can learn all sorts of useful info from videos. but without a background you don't know what is legit or not not to mention the fact that just mimicking the methods/movements is not going to make your taijiquan very usable at all.
      yes, taijiquan methods can be used as a external method, but then it's not taijiquan at all now is it? where do you live ? u have internet to search online, and i imagine you can seek out teachers in ur area. is there a reason you have not done that and try to learn from videos so much.
      so much is not going to be in these videos, and those things you need to be able to get the full health or combat ability of taijiquan. take care dude

      Calogero Fiore Thank you for taking the time to view my video. Could you kindly tell me which applications you think would not work.

    • @SciSciToys
      @SciSciToys 9 років тому

      With respect manyl of them, cause a real fight moves at a fast pace and is violent, the nature of a fight is like this, fajing wont save you, neither will those fine motor skills that you develop in Taiji, although it looks beautiful and may have a place in relaxing you when you do you form if your yinian is not on fighting when you practise your form then it may be healthy, even that is debatable, mind you anything that makes you relax must be good.

      Calogero Fiore WOW YOU GATHERED ALL THAT FROM A 1 HOUR VIDEO. TELL YOU WHAT MICHAEL I AM SURE CAN DEFEND HIMSELF ANYTIME HE NEEDS TO. I AM A TAI CHI MASTER 25 YEARS YANG STYLE. MY LAST FIGHT ONE PUNCH LANDED ON ME AND ASSALIANT WAS DOWN IN 2 SECONDS. TAI CHI FROM A TRUE MASTER CONSISTS OF CHEE SAU STICKY HANDS AND PUSH HANDS ALONG WITH POINT STRIKES. DO YOU REALLY THINK MICHAEL HAS THE TIME AND ENERGY TO EXPLAIN WHAT TAKES JUST TO REALLY LEARN 10 YEARS MININUM IN 60 MINUTES. TAI CHI IS NOT A INSTANT NOODLE DISH MY FIREND.

    • @SciSciToys
      @SciSciToys 9 років тому

      jorjiebear schick First of all thanks for your reply, 2nd there is no chi sau in Taiji, chi/Sau is from Wing Chun, if you are a MASTER why do you spell QI wrong, lol, its not CHEE, its Qi as in QiGong, right?
      You say you beat an opponent swiftly after he landed one punch, I assume he must have been a useless fighter, maybe drunk etc and yes, even Taiji can work against such an opponent, we dont know his level, strength etc. So yes I can say I beat some guy, but I never practised any art for 25years.
      If you have any proof then maybe can show us in a video of yourself beating this guy, that would be great.
      I have to agree with you that Tai Qi Quan is not an instant noodle dish and takes decades to master, but once you've 'Mastered' then what? Can you beat a trained fighter? I doubt it, otherwise we would see some videos of real Masters easily destroying opponents, but we never see it cause either these Masters are RARE indeed or are too shy or whatever - I believe the real Masters are RARE.
      May I ask in which country did you study Yang Taiji and who is/was your teacher?

    • @mdgilman
      @mdgilman  9 років тому +9

      Calogero Fiore What you say may be true, but my purpose is not to "show people how to fight". I show applications so Tai Chi players can understand what the movements represent, be more relaxed, have fun, get in shape, and find peace and love in their hearts. Our world is so full of fighting; we all need to find a way to live in a more caring and sharing way.

    ok i can't keep watching this. some things you are saying/doing are correct . others are going to get someone killed or hurt real bad. on so many levels.
    u really should either edit this or start with a fresh film, and stick to the simple stuff you do know instead of the things that you show that says your skills are not up to the material your showing folks.
