I had a shitty day yesterday. I hadn't slept the night before. The whole day I was just hating myself and questioning my existence. And, as I was walking home, I was listening to a Longest Johns playlist. Bones in the Ocean came on, and although I'd heard the song before, I'd yet to follow along with the lyrics. And once I realized what this song was about and how eerily descriptive it was of the day I was having, I started crying. Well, I waited until I got home, and then I immediately curled up into a ball and cried like I haven't cried since I was a kid. There were a few lyrics that specifically hit me. First of all: "Though their eyes speak of deaths full of struggle and strife, their smiles below say I don't owe them my life." I know it's not a 1:1 comparison between the story of the song and my life. The song is about someone riddled with survivors guilt after all of their friends have died. But, given what I was feeling and the self-loathing thoughts I was having, I felt like the song was telling me that I don't have to pay for my mistakes and my flaws with my life, which is how I sometimes do feel. And that's specifically how I was feeling yesterday. Like I was a terrible, worthless person who didn't deserve to live. I don't believe in "signs" or anything like that, but when this song came on right after I was having those thoughts, and then I heard that line, it felt bizarrely like the universe was trying to tell me something. Second of all, when the line switches from "I remember the fallen, do they think of me?" to "I remember the living, do they think of me?" Oof, game over. Obviously, that moment made me think of the people in my life who know and care about me and made me appreciate them. And finally: "Now that I'm staring down at the blackest abyss, I'm not sure what I want, but I don't think it's this." Just because you need to make a change in your life, just because you're searching for some sort of purpose, it doesn't mean that death is that change or is that purpose. It's almost always better to live and to find your peace in life, among the living. I'm in love with the whole idea of the song of becoming so fixated on death and the peace you think it will bring you that you begin to feel more acquainted with the dead than the living, only to remember that you are still alive and there is still peace to be found in the life you have left. I'm sorry, I know I'm repeating myself, but I'm really trying to articulate this as well as I can. Anyway, I've been addicted to The Longest Johns' music for the past few months, but I wasn't expecting one of their originals to make me feel such deep and intense emotions. I'd like to thank Dave for writing this beautiful piece of art. It genuinely means the world to me now.

I have major depression and found this song through one of their other songs, Ashes. Bones in the ocean had me crying pretty quickly with the line "To search for the place I hear all sailors end". It makes me think of someone looking for suicide, and all the repeated "will they think of me?" Is the person doubting going through with it. Amazingly written song, super powerful, love it!
Im not sure if this is how it was intended but what i got from it was thinking of the military and of a solider, in my mind while listening to this song and it drove me to actual tears i've never once been affected by a song in my life...
