    General Dallaire is my hero. He stands for justice and stood up for those who couldn't stand up for themselves. A true Canadian hero, a true hero in any respect. God Bless him, God Bless the people of Rwanda.

    A am in true awe for Roy Dupuis, who did an excellent job with this role. His interpretation of the general's heroic attitude and the combination of both toughness of an experienced high-rank soldier and empathy of a sensitive and caring human being confronting the atrocities of war is just fenomenal! The film stays with you for a long time after seeing it.

    I had the pleasure of sitting through his lecture at Concordia Univeristy a couple of days ago. Needless to say, the man is an inspiration to us all. A real life hero, who even in retirement, is dedicating his life towards trying to make this god foresaken world of ours a better place. In my opinion, he is easily one of the greatest and most influential Canadians of all time.

    I've loved the movie. It is so powerful and instills the emotions which are consistent with the reality. The beginning is amazing. While you join General Dallaire in his first drive through the beautiful Rwandan scenery, admire the thick lush greenery and see the everyday Rwandans walking the streets, women working at the fields under sun with their kids tied to their backs, carrying high baskets of yields; you also hear that accompanying beautiful, moving song, which together with the scenery is doing a great job telling you that "this is a beautiful country with beautiful people, but, unfortunately you know there is something really terrible happened here and you're about to see it".

    Just watched Shake Hands With The Devil. Tore my hart out when Dallaire said he failed the Rwandan people, hell he did all and more than he could do.
    And then he get's cowardly attacked by Destexhe, I don't even know that senator but he made me feel ashamed to be Belgian.

    Roy is a very bright man, however his main language is French, so yes he sometimes has trouble with his English since he doesn't use it on a daily basis since he still lives in Quebec, his home province. Research Roy before you judge the man. There's a lot more to him than this interview. I'm just saying.

    • @emrebilgi
      @emrebilgi 4 роки тому

      Is it really a second language? It just seems that he needs time to gather his views before starting to speak. When he starts, he mostly speaks without faltering and without an accent. Dallaire also speaks without an accent. Do most Canadians speak English like a native even if it's not their first language?

    • @justinp.3256
      @justinp.3256 4 роки тому +3

      @@emrebilgi what happens for French Canadians who have enough exposure to English is... after a while we'll sound pretty solid, but you still have a hang up here and there. So I've been in the U.S. for a while, but still have moments where I'm talking smoothly but run into a word in English that escapes me, and it seems like I lost my train of thought, but usually it's because I forget the word for a moment. An easy word like "elbow" or something... and only the French word is in my head. So often times the English is passing through the structure of the French language. Notice how Roy says "I took my decision" instead of "made my decision". In French, we say "pris ma décision", "pris" being the word "to take." So no matter how well we're speaking, there's a balancing act we're doing

    • @emrebilgi
      @emrebilgi 4 роки тому

      @@justinp.3256 I didn't think he wasn't remembering words, perhaps because his North American native English sounding accent and speed was making that unnoticeable. So I thought he was just gathering his thoughts or was tired/distracted. About the exposure of some French Canadians to English: do you mean living in the US, watching movies, etc., things any foreigner may also do or is there anything else available to them, like having English native speaking Canadian neighbors, relatives, friends, tv channels inside Canada or being close to and visiting English-speaking parts of Canada or even having connections from there?

    One powerful scene from the movie is when the Hutu extremist soldiers storming the moderate female Hutu Prime Minister's residence. The one to one confrontation between the Hutu extremist commander and the UN unit commander at the entrance of the residence was so convincing and overwhelming. The former was intensely intimidating and the latter was resilient and calm under that intense pressure. Both acting was admirable.

    I agree with General Dallaire that the outcome would have been unpredictable and with twisted reality had Hollywood made it. Instead of successfully telling what had overall happened like the book, it would have focused on one of the many parts/episodes, would have been somewhat far from reality and focused on a love story where things end up well just because the main couple has been saved and is safe forgetting close to a million people who lost their lives. All these elements are present in "Hotel Rwanda".

    Just for the record, Belgium did apologise to the Congolese people and relatives of Lumumba for our role in his assassination. And we also apologised for our role in the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. Too little, too late for sure but I don't see the French or Americans apologising for their role in Rwanda. Hell, the whole UN should apologise to the people of Rwanda. Apparently "Never again" doesn't count when it happens in Africa(Rwanda/Darfur).

    Rwanda and Burundi were colonised by Germans. Congo was officially the Crown domain of our late king Leopold2, Belgium took Congo over after scandals about the way Leopold ruled over Congo.
    I can state for a fact that Belgium never had much of an appetite for colonies.
    So in fact no country was ever colonised by Belgium but they ended up under Belgian rule due to certain turn of events.
    And yes we had Lumumba killed, but at least we acknowledge our responsibility unlike the CIA.

    I can understand that you think it is weird that I feel the need to say that we never actively sought to acquire colonies but I think it is an important nuance because Belgians at home never considered Congo, Rwanda and Burundi as part of an empire as did the British and French with their colonies. Colonialism wasn't a hot topic in Belgium and people generally just didn't care.
    But 'our' colonialism was no different than that of the French or British.

    I understand or at least I can imagine why you find the saving of expats and especially their pets quiet disgusting. Nobody was willing to send extra troops for the UN mission (except Belgium) but they would send troops to save their own people.
    But it's no use sending troops when your mandate doesn't allow you to preform the mission you are on.
    Like a Belgian para said when asked why he had cut the blue beret into pieces "ça, c'est une signe de suicide".

    I gather my facts as a student of history, whether you wish to accept them is up to you.
    It's a historic fact that Belgium never actively pursued colonies, of course that doesn't excuse what we did when these countries, due to certain circumstances, did fell into Belgian hands.
    But I think it is an important nuance if you wish to right off all Belgians as evil colonialists, we never acquired a colony through conquest.
    But we did act as paternalist as other colonists.

    Dude everybody raped and is raping Africa. I can only hope that you notice that Belgium is making immense efforts to make Congo a viable democracy, but there isn't much we can do. Billions were pumped into this country by Belgium but with nothing to show for.
    In the end it doesn't matter anymore how we arrived at this situation, the important thing is to try and change it.
    It's up to Africans now to take their destiny in their own hands.
