i love'em too. only one i have is the mini, but i want the original and i would really like to have the 3-candle one too. some people i know laughed at the mini until they went camping with me. then they bought themselves one afterwards. think i got 40 tea light candles at dollar store for a dollar. thumbed up /thx
very nice break down. i can't seem to find a micro for sale anywhere, but i already buy the 8 hour tea lights so that mini is en route to my house meow. thanks a lot for the review!
i have 10 of the minis and use them all the time, we have frequent power outages that usually don't last longer than 2-3 hours so a 4 hour tea light candle is perfect and the lanterns produce flicker-free light in an indoor environment. and the candles are really inexpensive and the aluminum cups are recyclable.
The replacement candles are about the same price here in 'The States' As of today, (11 NOV 2020, Veteran's Day) the Micro is no longer offered on the UCO website. I would like to see more options available in the candle selection. I too am opting to make my own candles for my UCO tall (standard) candle lantern.
"A candle is a candle is a candle" I wish you did a test in the dark showing how bright they are because I'm fairly certain the tea light candles throw off way less light than the bigger ones.
It's discontinued ... You can buy on eBay sometimes now here and there but it's got premium price tags to it ... If you can find it now you better buy it ! 👍👍👍 It's became a legend 👌👌👌
You can buy 8 hr tea candles still very inexpensive, stores 3 inside the mini, you might be able to add one more 4 hour one. The mini is my favorite too. You can also get citronella tea candles (not UCO they’re more expensive) if you want. I get mine at Amazon. I’ve never had the bottom fall off, just make sure you’ve screwed it correctly.
The wax will spill but the tealight wick (where the fire is) stays inside the lantern and quickly burns out since all the wax has run away. So there's a little bit of wax cleanup, but no significant fire danger. I ran this test the first day I had mine: set it on a stack of paper, knock it over, wait to see if badness happens. Hardest part was getting the wax off the glass afterwards.
Would the black screw in bit at the bottom be interchangeable between the full size and the micro? It would be nice if the full size was also able to transport an additional tea light.
Does the full size candle take up ALL the room inside the lantern? Or could the tea light holding cap be used in there, without cutting down the candle?
I used to have the tallest one but there must have been something wrong with it. After burning for an hour or so the whole candle got so soft that the spring squeezed out the whole liquified candle. It was very fast as it gushed out and ran like water to the ground below. Luckily I did not get this hot melted wax on me. Luckily this happened outside the tent so no equipment was damaged. I thought there was something wrong so I went and bought new original candles, cleaned and inspected the lantern. The next time I used it the same thing happened and then I tossed the thing in the trash. If such a thing occurs while the lantern is hanging above you in the tent that would certainly cause severe burns on your skin not to mention all the ruined equipment. Has this ever happened to you?
@@bernarddeboeck8405 I used the original candles that came with it and then I bought another two pack of original candles so I used the right kind. Perhaps the lantern was faulty but I will gamble with this lantern again.
@@Thestripper1 wow! Ok, I trully never had this. I did use it in temperature of around -9°C to +10°C ( 15.8F to 50F ). Perhaps that is the problem? I don't know. It is a strange problem indeed! Did you try contacting UCO? It might have been a bad batch of candles....twice 😒
Yes 4 Hrs. burning time and some can't be re-lit cause te wick is still there but will only glimm and not produce a flame - why I don't know bu it's a fact!
My review of the UCO Mini Tea Light Lantern non collapsible type. For a ha'p'orth of tar the ship was lost. This product is a great idea spoilt by one unnecessary flaw, the base holding the tea light falls off. It would have been so easy to have made it a screw fit or even to have made the existing fitting a more positive clip fit, but no, just a rubbish unthought out slide fit. Its OK if you don't move it around or just hang it carefully, but I made the mistake of picking it up and turning around, the base fell away dropping liquid wax and a flame to the floor, hot wax + fire = DANGER. NOT GOOD. So extreme care needed. In conclusion the tea light lantern is OKish, cheaply made, but the one good thing is the glass tube, looks and feels robust, and removable for cleaning if necessary, (I had to make small alterations to prevent this from falling out also). Generally speaking you could get a better tea light lantern from a garden centre for half the price, but I liked the look and the idea of this lantern and will work on the base to make it safe. It needs it! Not a safe product, buyer beware.
Sounds like you didn’t pick it up and turn it around, you simply turned it around while the base was still in the surface. Friction unscrewed it. Of course, I’m just guessing. I wasn’t there.
I wish I had purchased a micro when they still made them. I have had the original(Northern Lights) since the 1990s.
The mini is still my fav

Yup, economical and efficient. Thanks for watching and for the comment.
Good review. I didn't realize that the other ones collapsed. I wanted one to keep my coffee warm. Glad I checked here first.
The tree burners good for keeping a coffee

I think that the Micro must be out of production. Couldn't find any for sale in the UK.

In New Zealand the candles are $13 for a box of three so I used the candle it came with and made a mould and make my own.

well you could buy a tealight and a "candle" for $5 and prove me wrong.

@@Moostery interesting
The price for candles is sick, ridiculously expensive. I'm doing what someone else said, make a mold, make my own it's way cheaper.
I found mine in the tip, still had some candle in it, and it burned super bright. Just for ambient austetics, perfect.
Thanks for the review 👍🏻

UCO should have a 3 (or 4) burner for tea lights 🤔 Lovely review, cheers 👍🏻
i agree
The original is worth getting if you buy the citronella candles for midgies and mozzies etc
If you tip it over is it just a mess or does it by burst into flames too?

Threadwise yes however the full size uses special candles and thus the setup is different.
Does the full size candle take up ALL the room inside the lantern? Or could the tea light holding cap be used in there, without cutting down the candle?
It takes up all the room.

No it hasn't. Maybe you got a really stiff spring? Personally I like the mini the best. No spring in those.
What candle did you use? In all these years I never had this.

Sounds like you got some Chinese knockoff candle.
The standard lantern - I've never had one last anything LESS than 11 hours and often 12 hours - not the 8-9 hours.
Do you think the similar lantern but gas ones will have the same anti-condensation effect...?
Btw, interesting video.
Have not tried but quite possible.
Will be nice if caught in a snow storm, hand warmers all in a get home bag , sits beside me when driving in winter.
Bonjour So which one is the best ?
I favor the mini.
Ok Merci 🤗👍

If you twist it further, it has notches that lock the base.
