I’ve just wondered: does the emperor ever come to realize how much Horus outplayed him when it comes to the true story behind the thousand sons’ fall to chaos?
Fun Lore Fact: the Thousand Sons had issues having over 100k marines due to the Flesh-Change (sacred number of Tzeentch being 9). While they didn't get as low as the Emperor's Children legionaries before meeting their primarch, they were always understrength and had to deploy more tactically in a warzone.
But thousand sons are still an astartes, physically enhanced super-soldiers in their core, being a psychers is secondary. They could change their ways, but sadly, they didn’t.
I absolutely adore how deep you guys went on this. Sunny's passion surrounding Egyptian mythology and culture and the deep diving of the lore done by Cal. I want to quickly make a correction to Cal's naming at 1:01:50. Those Astartes are from the Exorcists, a chapter known for being from the 13th "Dark Founding" and as a part of their initiation process, new Astartes have to serve as a Daemonhost before being saved by an Inquisitor, this unusual process makes the Chapter very resistant to Daemonic possession and Chaos corruption, from what I can tell they also tend to work with the Ordo Malleus within the Inquisition as well, even rumoured to have been created upon the order of the Inquisition. They're also suspected to be a successor of the Imperial Fists. The Executioners are an Imperial Fist successor Chapter from the 3rd Founding and are largely known to be a barbaric and violent Chapter, more akin to the World Eaters than their parent Legion, their colours are a blue-tinted gunmetal grey with the ocassional use of yellow on the pauldrons or helm to denote Veteran rank, their symbol is two short axes backed by a red shield. Edit: Just saw the Executioners' original colour scheme and I kid you not, they look like how cows look with the black and white splotchy pattern lol
You guys should do a video where you homebrew a loyalist space marine chapter and a traitor space marine chapter with their designs tied to lore you guys come up with. What planet they come from, what legion they hail from, what culture they've developed and what customs and tactics they have.

Still, what's done is done, and all is dust.

snakes represent the thing that tempts you so it is entirely fitting for Slaanesh with her erotic themes but it is also great for Tzeetnch because wanting to know things is also very tempting. Combining these elements with others will help units with similar iconography stand out. A lot of the time GW designs can be very fixed, so I am glad you feel that snakes can work for Tzeetnch too ~Sunny

Cal, your description of the downfall of the Thousand Sons was so eloquently put. You've done better explaining that in a handful of minutes than some lore masters have attempted in a full 1hr lore video.
this content is great . breaking down the design of diferent legions/chapter and hear what a designer thinks is very interesting and important in a way because we can understand design better wich can help when we decorate and paint our minis
Yes, they dressed up all their soldiers as kings because they are. Every space marine is a 1/1000 individual and are considered demigods by mortal men. It makes sense that each and every one of their armor would be heavily adorned, even for the rank and file soldier. Now they are mindless automaton, but their armor is still from when they were honorable warrior kings. It’s a reminder of the glory they once had.
I can see what you're saying there but if you are an army of demigods then rank will become unnecessary if they were all seen as kings, so perhaps just their higher ranking guys having the pharoh headress or even just the sorcerers makes sense to differentiate them on the field. ~Sunny
@ what separates the rank and file from their sorcerer masters is the evident robes, adornments in other areas, the magic shooting from their hands, and the fact they are floating off the ground. It works on the tabletop and even in the recent space marine game. The sorcerers also often have different headdresses from the Rubric marines.
You know, I like the Egyptian theming of the Thousand Sons, but I'm also not really the biggest fan personally, of when that Egyptian symbolism is too up front or on the nose. 3rd party bits designers will often take the Egyptian theme a bit too far in my opinion? Like making a jackal head for the terminators, or directly integrating ankhs, or hieroglyphics, or classic eyes of Horus in the design. It feels too much for them. After all, they're not just ancient Egyptians wearing power armor, they're from Prospero. Egypt inspired but not egypt directly, if that makes sense.
Yeah I can see what you are saying there, I guess seeing how the previous legions sometimes don't show off the culture, I wanted to put more into it ~Sunny
You'll be surprised to find how many critters love cat food biscuits 😂 our local possum Francine loves to eat them to be fair so does our friend's dog Nala ~Sunny
When it comes to chaos warbands, I'm positive that there's a warband somewhere that echos the preheresy armor of thier legion. You'll see that between the black legion and a splinter warband next episode! Aside from that. I'm curious if you guys plan on a daemon primarch analysis/redesign? The new plastic Fulgrim mini compared to the heresy resin is an interesting comparison.
Sunny, Cal: What do you think of GW under-using colors like White or Yellow for Chaos factions as dominant colors for design of mayor factions (like first founding factions), at the same time that colors like blue (used to represent Night Lords and Thousand sons in 40k) or red (used to represent World Eaters and Word Bearers) have been overused for Chaos? Thanks for talking about my favorite legion, by the way. I really love dusty boys 😅
White have too many positive connotations with them, and red and black are more classic interpretation of evil. This is because they have more serious, aggressive and negative connotations to them. As I mentioned in the video I still don't feel that blue yellow and gold are a good fit for the thousand sons. Once you change it to Ultramarine blue it's more fitting with tzeentch ~Sunny
So the other thing is that white is seen as the beginning of things and as we will end up discussing on word bearers episode so, I must hide this comment from Sunny... Chaos is seen as the Primordial truth. We also see a common phrase in Inquisitor that all Inquisitors start out puritan and end up radical likely a play on the common saying "If you are not liberal when you're young you don't have a heart and if you're not conservative when you're old you don't have a brain". So in this sense, Chaos is seen as the end and the Imperial Truth as the beginning. Thus Imperials use white and Chaos uses black - Cal
12:40 I can think of something to change... his inability to look up... that golden tuning fork above his nose looks like it'd bang into the chest head cover piece if he looks more than maybe ten degrees back.
35:00 is poetic that Magnus destroys the Webway Project, beacuse it was the Emperor's plan to use Magnus (imprisioning him) to empower the now known Golden Throne to mantain the Webway project open 1:02:00 The chapter is the Exorcists
Huh...that does sounds a bit like poetic justice 😏 add one more point to the bad dad score. And yes another commentor has told us about the exorcists I thought it made sense that they are the ones to fight the thousands sons ~Sunny
I like the concepts you guys were talking about I think keeping the pharaoh head dress is important because it shows the fallen king. Here is the pharaoh piece left everything else is plain relative to the uniqueness of the sorcerers
Truly imo the most tragic space marines. Many are tragic in many ways, certainly many space marines are no stranger to tragic fates, especially all the chaos space marines. But none of them hold a candle to the tragedies upon tragedies and misunderstandings of the thousand sons imo. Even my favorite little Lamenters’ famed tragedies pale in comparison.
@ I mean, at least the Lamenters still have some kind of good relations either way the imperium and usually get to die instead of living as husks or mutated madmen
@@WhatareyouPaintingnow I do like your redesign, however, I believe it lacks a crucial element. In my reading of the book, Magnus and his legion epitomize the philosophy of "the end justifies the means" and the mindset of "I am not wrong; you simply fail to grasp my multidimensional reasoning.".
I don't want to offend anyone, but I think the part inside Sunny that controls Photoshop is broken. I haven't watched the video to the end yet, but her redesigns of pre-heresy legionnaires look... Weird. In a bad way. Like someone put on really cheap Egyptian-themed children's party costumes over power armor.
Thousand sons are my main army and by chaos gods are they a pain to paint. they are supposed to the cleanest looking chaos marines and they have the most trim out of them all. it is goergous then its done but the process is very tedious and painfull. still enjoy them despite this.
THEY ARE MEANT TO BE THE CLEANEST??! I feel like they have the craziest of trims compared to other chaos legions probably because they're trims incorporate more wavy shapes which would make you need to focus twice as hard, ironically I think Nurgle is the "cleanest" because it's more forgiving to paint ~Sunny
@@WhatareyouPaintingnow clean as in no dirt, blood or grime. Everything has to clean and vibrant. And i have to paint every detail. I cant hide behind dirt blood or others to obscure parts of the model. Sorry fir confusion
While I’m not done watching the full video i think if sunny had full control over the thousand sons they would loose every last bit of character and just be space marines in Egyptian cosplays
A slight issue unfortunately with a lot if redesign ideas is it has to be visible on the model, and be possible to paint within a realistic timeframe. I do like ideas but even current guys are very complex as they are. Plus fidelity of details on an individual models. Horus heresy is meant to be played and painted out of box. All legions use the same kiks and making additional legion specific kits is pricy, especially for more niche game. GW are businesses first and foremost. They do exist but the price in enormous.
@@WhatareyouPaintingnow heresy to be honest. But I am approaching it from the perspective of player and painter first. I buy a box of 20 tactics, now I can easily make them any legion and it will look like they belong to the army. And I need to invest a lot of time and effort to paint 30 -60 marines to a standard before the game. 40k redesign look good and something that can be done easily by GW.
@@andrewkomlyev4877 I think unforunately the age of cheap miniatures and the age of the painter is over... At least with games-workshop. The reason I say this is because essentially they are making things more and more detailed and I don''t think any of our pre heresy designs except Sunny's crazy bird one is too much. Just giving them the little dress isn't that bad and head swaps aren't that hard either not that we have that many considering that eye of Horus was painted on. I don't think it would effect painting time that badly - Cal
Hahahah that's definitely a possibility 🤣 so the thousand sons...are disguising themselves as their enemies!!! Woooah I reverse engineered myself, nice ~Sunny
Life in the oceans must be sheer hell. A vast, merciless hell of permanent and immediate danger. So much of a hell that during evolution some species-including man-crawled, fled onto some small continents of solid land, where the Lessons of Darkness continue. Werner Herzog 😊
I think I would have too! But I think it's mostly cus I'm an Egypt geek but I'd fight with a fully converted squad at least, not sure if I'd convert and entire army but knowing myself, if I had the time I proooobably might end up doing that 😅 ~Sunny
So idk if it’s different in the English of your area, but harbinger is usually pronounced har-binger with the last part pronounced similarly to “binge-watching”. Not “har-bringer”. Not trying to be a dick just help you out Definition: “a person or thing that announces or signals the approach of another./a forerunner of something.”
The word "plain" is used very often. And for some reason always as something bad. There is no accounting for taste, of course, but... Is it really bad? I mean... They are warriors. Isn't the lack of unnecessary details an advantage for warriors? Yes, you can say that plain warriors have no individuality. But then again... Is that something bad? They are kind of fighting a war, they have no time to brandish their bright individuality. Yes, they must express the individuality of their legion. But for this they seem to have legion colors. Maybe this is enough for them? So much has been (and, I am sure, will be) said about color psychology and color symbolism. Maybe this is enough to express the individuality of the legion? It seems to me that the ability to express the characteristic features and peculiarities of the legion only with a combination of colors will be very valuable. And not to hang the armor with kilograms of trinkets like a Christmas tree, or paint it with three layers of patterns and ornaments, like the Berlin Wall from the FRG side.

I mean, I'd also add a decent amount of (ancient) Persian stuff
Yeah I can see what you are saying there, I guess seeing how the previous legions sometimes don't show off the culture, I wanted to put more into it ~Sunny
48:38 We have the Hadada ibis which has a distinctive cry & loves pet food pellets for some reason.
One of the Thousand Sons's more notable warbands is the Crimson Sons, and they do use the same ruby red the pre-heresy faction used.
Many of our members have been talking about the new EC refresh we were considering doing a video about it ~Sunny
@@WhatareyouPaintingnow YES! I'd like to hear your thoughts about the new Fulgrim model too!
@@SWATDRUMMUH We may do a new series talking about the models themselves! - Cal
@@WhatareyouPaintingnow Do you think the Thousand Sons should look more like the Tomb Kings from Warhammer Fantasy?
12:40 I can think of something to change... his inability to look up... that golden tuning fork above his nose looks like it'd bang into the chest head cover piece if he looks more than maybe ten degrees back.
ha ha ha some space marine designs are like that... you look and you're like... wait what? I don't think that physically works - Cal
35:00 is poetic that Magnus destroys the Webway Project, beacuse it was the Emperor's plan to use Magnus (imprisioning him) to empower the now known Golden Throne to mantain the Webway project open
1:02:00 The chapter is the Exorcists
Huh...that does sounds a bit like poetic justice 😏 add one more point to the bad dad score. And yes another commentor has told us about the exorcists I thought it made sense that they are the ones to fight the thousands sons ~Sunny
this is my favorite chaos faction.
Hope you enjoy it - Cal
I like the concepts you guys were talking about I think keeping the pharaoh head dress is important because it shows the fallen king. Here is the pharaoh piece left everything else is plain relative to the uniqueness of the sorcerers
Truly imo the most tragic space marines. Many are tragic in many ways, certainly many space marines are no stranger to tragic fates, especially all the chaos space marines. But none of them hold a candle to the tragedies upon tragedies and misunderstandings of the thousand sons imo. Even my favorite little Lamenters’ famed tragedies pale in comparison.
Really?! Even more tragic than the Lamentors? I find that hard to believe 😅 ~Sunny
@ I mean, at least the Lamenters still have some kind of good relations either way the imperium and usually get to die instead of living as husks or mutated madmen
Need to go around just saying "Horus did everything wrong"
No no no you must sing "you ruined everything" every time Horus is mentioned have you seen that part of the video yet? 🤣~Sunny
@WhatareyouPaintingnow I'm in the post heresy design notes lol
Ah more DvsL goodness
Every week until we have finished the legions - Cal
I got 'A Thousand Sons' to hear their side of the story. It's a complementary book to 'Prospero Burns,' which revolves around the Space Wolves.
And did my interpretations match their perspective in the 'A Thousand Sons' book? ~Sunny
Magnus did nothing wrong.
He was told to do nothing; and he did it wrong.
Oh my good lord 😂 you guys are so mean to him... But here I am still laughing - Cal
Thousand sons are my main army and by chaos gods are they a pain to paint. they are supposed to the cleanest looking chaos marines and they have the most trim out of them all. it is goergous then its done but the process is very tedious and painfull. still enjoy them despite this.
Trim is the price of the dark gods' power.
*Codices 46:47
Ok ~Sunny
While I’m not done watching the full video i think if sunny had full control over the thousand sons they would loose every last bit of character and just be space marines in Egyptian cosplays
Mayhaps mayhaps, I do like my egyptian themes but I did try reeeeally hard not to go too overboard still 🤣~Sunny
Should have the the middle red and keep the outer parts white
Oh do you mean the Apothecary? If so, why do you feel the middle should be kept red and the outer parts white? 👀 ~Sunny
So which redesigns do you take issue with? I mean all of the legions have upgrade kits. So I am not quite sure what the issue is - Cal
@@WhatareyouPaintingnow sorry for confusion
@@andrewkomlyev4877 I think unforunately the age of cheap miniatures and the age of the painter is over... At least with games-workshop. The reason I say this is because essentially they are making things more and more detailed and I don''t think any of our pre heresy designs except Sunny's crazy bird one is too much. Just giving them the little dress isn't that bad and head swaps aren't that hard either not that we have that many considering that eye of Horus was painted on. I don't think it would effect painting time that badly - Cal
so at 1:14, your space marine has teh swedish flag painted on, meaning its a swedish pagan, making it a spacewolf in my opinion. =D
Werner Herzog
😊
That is a beautiful quote, one perhaps to classy for the likes of us. But thank you so much for sharing - Cal
Never wanted to play Chaos Marines but if i did i would have played The Thousand Sons army
I think I would have too! But I think it's mostly cus I'm an Egypt geek but I'd fight with a fully converted squad at least, not sure if I'd convert and entire army but knowing myself, if I had the time I proooobably might end up doing that 😅 ~Sunny
55:45 Bro that's the SAME color, what are you on Cal? (Joking in exaggeration, serious in opinion)
Yeahhhh when Sunny showed them side by side in the video I had to agree - Cal
MAGNUS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is included in this episode... Correct 😁 - Cal
Is Sunny french?
I've been trying to place her accent for a while now and it reminds me of the vtuber Saurei who I do know is french.
I'm actually Singaporean but I did watch a lot of American TV growing up so when I speak it's a bit of a mix of American and Singaporean 😅 ~Sunny
What's Tzeentch's favourite Metallica song?
Master of Puppets.
Badum ts ~Sunny 🤣
is thousand sons and ahriman story is just Fullmetal alchemist in space ( '_')?
You know what 🤔...now that you say it you might be right ~sunny
So idk if it’s different in the English of your area, but harbinger is usually pronounced har-binger with the last part pronounced similarly to “binge-watching”. Not “har-bringer”. Not trying to be a dick just help you out
Definition:
“a person or thing that announces or signals the approach of another./a forerunner of something.”
Just mispronunciation most likely.
MAGNUS DID NOTHING WRONG!!!
(sorry, I couldn't help but shout out this iconic phrase)
