To answer your question about what qualifies a disqualification, it’s similar to what you said around the 9:00 mark: no regard to tackle safely. Most of the time a direct head to head hit has a good chance to lead to disqualification, but when it’s clear the opponent has no regard for the health and safety of a player, ejections are near automatic

The best clean hit I’ve seen in this video is at the 8:19 mark. The defender keeps his head away from the opponent’s head and has a clear intention to break up the pass instead of hit the defender as hard as possible. When a defender is able to slide across a player instead of stopping all their momentum, that is good technique. You can see him celebrating at the end there too😂

They don't do horizontal passes (called laterals) because if the ball gets dropped the other team can dive on it. Protecting the ball is always the first priority.

Also the speed of the linebackers..If the lateral is hanging in the air, they will pick it off... they also will knock the life out of the back as soon as he catches the backwards pass..

    Coby Bryant, not Kobe.
Look up the famous lateral play by Trinity against the Millsaps Majors. Its just rare to see it outside of desperation situations like that because it so rarely works. If a ball is thrown forward its a play-ending penalty, and if it is thrown sideways or backwards, it can easily go for a fumble/turnover. Just not worth attempting.
There's also the triple option offense that does something similar to rugby, but its fairly outdated. The service academies will sometime use it (due to size limitations along the O-line) and that's about it. Even Georgia Tech dropped it when the coach changed.

Good one Kabir. It's just too risky to be improving by lateraling the ball to a teammate. There have been some usage of the lateral like Rugby by it's considered a trick play. Or it's improvised out of desperation.

Lateral passes make less sense in American Football, because unlike in Rugby, if the other team gets the ball then they not only have possession, they can also be in good field position to score.
Rugby's back and forth nature makes turnovers far less devastating than in football.
If you don't get much yardage on first down, then try again on second and third. But always protect the football.

In some Canadian Junior Hockey leagues they are installing tiny sensors in the helmets that register hits. If an excessive hit is registered, via Bluetooth, the trainer gets an alert and the player is taken off the ice and checked for concussion.

US football teams don't do much lateral passing like rugby does because possession of the ball is much more important in football than it is in rugby and lateral passing is a good way to lose possession of the ball . This is called a " turnover " in football and losing possession via a turnover is a key statistic in football . The team committing the fewest turnovers is far more likely to win the game

You don't get ejected just for a shot to the head. It has to be a pretty egregious hit. Where you launch yourself into the opposing players head. You can also get ejected if you get 2 taunting or unsportsmanlike conduct flags too. I think its 2 at least. A blow to the head that isn't as violent still is a flag but unless its a really hard hit where you launch yourself into contact it normally doesn't lead to an ejection.

  • @loganleroy8622
    @loganleroy8622 11 місяців тому +1

The simplest way to describe targeting is using your helmet to make contact with the other guy's helmet. It's not just limited to that, but that's the basic starting principle.

  • @AndrewColombana

Only a few players are ball handlers. You pitch to a line man and they have too much tape and hand pads and they can't hang onto the ball. Plus you can't bundle all your ball handlers within 10 yards because they also bring the defenders who are keying on them. In Rugby, everyone is a ball handler and used to catching the ball and you have to spread out and time your pitches and even that goes wrong with missed queues sometimes.

Starting a fight, A REAL fight intentionally kicking or punching etc, hitting a player after the play is over, hitting a player after they are out of bounds, touching or hitting an official are all things that get you tossed from a game. People will edit me if I added too much or left stuff out, I'm sure.
I don't know what the training is like for rugby but I do know these guys push their bodies to lift more push more hit harder run faster never quit and know their playbooks, and thats how they can play every week at maximum levels.
Yes you could keep laterally the ball but you also run the risk of losing the ball and that's why it's saved as a last play or next to last play move to hopefully score to tie or win when the game is just about over

Most of these hits to the head are unintentional. A player lowers his head to hit another pleyer in the chest who then lowers his head and they collide head-to-head. It's one of the hardest pemalties to avoid PLUS this generation of players were taught from elementary school through college to lead with their heads until the NFL outlawed the had to head hit in the open field. Now most don't know how to tackle naturally without making head-to-head contact. When I played the coaches used to get on us for "arm tackling" meaning using your arms and not you helmet for first contact.

#22 on the defense for the Denver Broncos was one of those players who wouldn't learn his lesson, he was suspended twice in 2023 for those kinds of hits.
He's a perfect fit for the Kansas City Chiefs though, but the Las Vegas Raiders being in the first two clips is ironic because they've been a punching bag of the NFL for almost two decades now, they haven't won a playoff game since the 2002 and I think that streak will continue.
Also in the the first few clips, he's in those and he did that so often that people were fed up, if I was on the other team, he would get his ass kicked hard.

Without comparing the athletes, the hits in football are way harder because wearing light pads give players a false sense of delusion of how safe they actually are. You are not allowed to clothes line, that move was banned since around the 50’s due to a player named night train lane who you should watch a video on. Night train lane had a technique that was like clothes lining that he called the “night train necktie” and had broken so many players jaws with it it resulted in a trend of wearing facemasks which started with a player named Otto graham who got hit by the train.

You're ejected from the game if you fight using your helmet, you launch yourself during a tackle, helmet to helmet can be a personal fowl or an ejection depending on the situation. When you attempt to hurdle a player and accidentally knock him out, that's not a penalty at all. I've seen cases where multiple players are ejected bcuz of fighting as well.

Many years ago, my dad, who was a true fan of the game, told me that football had become so violent and the players so lethal, that it probably should not be played at the professional level. It's far too big to just go away. But, maybe he did have a point.

Any head to head shot can get you ejected but it's up to the refs, normally they just give the penalty unless it's egregious. And by that I mean if it's obvious they were trying to make head to head contact and it wasn't an accident.
However if you do it twice in a game it's automatic ejection even if it was an accident.
That being said as much as the NFL says the rules are to protect players it's just to get more scoring in the game. If both teams don't score 30 points they aren't happy. They almost never make rule changes to protect defenders. Hell the ball carrier can all but rip the defenders helmet off and it's not a facemask but if the defense touches the facemask without even grabbing it then it's a penalty.

  • @mage1439

If they really wanted to take player safety seriously, they have to start by coming down hard on things like intentionally leading with the helmet, which you can see so much of here. It needs to be harshly punished to show it's not going to be allowed. Also slamming into people who are diving, or like when the QB was sliding (which means he's already down).
And also when people celebrate a big hit, that should be an automatic ejection with possibility of suspension. That's a start to making the game safer. Too many of these guys still WANT to ring each other's bells, and it needs to stop.
