Porsche 911 GT3 Manual v PDK: DRAG RACE

- Which is faster, a manual Porsche 911 GT3 or a Porsche 911 GT3 equipped with a PDK automatic gearbox?
Well, it’s time to find out! Mat and Yianni are lining up for another carwow drag race to see just how much performance difference there is when it comes to choosing either an automatic or manual gearbox in the new Porsche 911 GT3.
Apart from the gearbox, these two cars are almost identical. They’re both powered by a 4-litre naturally-aspirated flat-six, and they both put down 510hp and 470Nm of torque respectively. The manual is slightly lighter, though, tipping the scales at 1,418kg. With the PDK equipped, it comes in at 1,435kg.
So how will this play out… Will it be a clean sweep for the auto? Or could the manual win it?
There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!
Manual or PDK... Which would you choose? VOTE BELOW!

2nd gear 2.38 2.38
3rd gear 1.72 1.72
4th gear 1.34 1.34

6th gear 0.96 0.88
7th gear 0.84 -
Reverse gear 3.42 3.42
Total transmission ratio RA 3.97 3.76
For Mat to be THAT close on the final drag race in a manual, I won’t ever question his skill again (not that I did before, but still haha)
Fr the PDK is oneof the best gearboxes ever made
As an owner of a 992 GT3 Manual (non touring) who knows these cars very well: 1. Great 1/4 mile run in the manual. These cars take work to get below 12 seconds with a manual (I'm usually high 11s without a massive clutch dump launch, but with pretty spot on shifting). 2. The reason the touring manual might accelerate a little faster in gear is the weight difference (not just the manual being lighter, but also Mat being lighter...Fuel load also matters A LOT with these cars that have large 90 liter tanks, as they're pretty light and a full tank weighs around 150 lbs). So there could easily be a 200 lbs difference when you add up all these factors. That makes a big difference in these, whereas it would be less noticeable if racing in a Turbo S (for example). 3. On the brake front, the winged GT3 is one of the very best braking cars ever built. The difference could be tires, slightly better pedal modulation, or more aero downforce at the initial brake point of 100 mph (no real impact as you drop below 80 mph). Car has insane braking on warm Cup 2s. Great video. Thx for sharing. Drag race was actually closer than I thought. I know Mat has managed a 10.9 sec before in a PDK GT3, so these cars are surprisingly quick for only 510 hp. Obviously, you need a turbo S or GT2RS if you really want to go fast in a straight line.

I like E-cars but if combustion, then definitely manual 👌
Mat, the quickest way to check if the 3rd gear is different on the two cars is to compare the revs at the same speed. In the video, at 8:36, the manual is doing 4000 rpm at 50 mph
What rpm is the PDK doing at 50 mph?
@@pilotplaying They didn't show it in the video, unless I missed it. Mat needs to buy a GT3 PDK to answer that...
technically they have the footage for the rev and speed of the gt3 pdk.
check from other yt channels, maybe the answer is there
From one of those 0-300kph videos, it looks like the 992 GT3 PDK reaches 91 mph at 8000 rpm, while the manual here is at 98 mph at 8000 rpm, so as expected the PDK has about a 7% shorter 3rd gear. Not sure why, maybe the lighter weight and reduced drivetrain losses, but the in-gear performance of the manual seems to exceed the PDK’s.
Would love to see them run to top speed and see if the wing actually creates that much drag, but good race over all Mat!! Top tier stuff
It doesn’t in factory mode. I’ve hit the advertised top speed on mine (199 mph / 320 km/h). Wing does create more drag in max downforce setting.

💯 I’ve been driving manual and only manuals for past 22 years
I’ve driven manuals since 1974, you can save the manuals all you want but it doesn’t belong in this car. It needs a PDK to eliminate it’s only weakness, low torque low in the power band. If you want to go slow in a manual get a 996 GT3
@@jimsteinway695 the GT3 is all about driver enjoyment, that's why the manual suits it so well, if you want all out track performance just get the RS model.
I am sorry to say that emissions regulations have killed the manual; which is the case in Europe. If you want a manual you will now have to look at older used cars.
Matt, do you know about the speed shifting function in the manual GT3s? You can keep the gas pedal floored while upshifting, the system matches the revs for you. This helps in acceleration races.

Great example of DCT vs Manual, Wing drag coefficiency, and tires compound vs suspension setup. Two identical GT3 with different wing angles, tires and suspension adjustment would have provided different results! Weight of driver, etc etc etc... You guys are fun to watch no need for empirical data LOL
It would be interesting if you logged the 60-130 and quarter time of each car as this takes out the guess work and is a good metric that is used elsewhere. Deffo has to be the manual in one of these as long as it’s a touring!

That 3rd race was very impressive. Matt drove the hell out of that bad boy to stay so close to the pdk
9:21 the gearing in the manual and the pdk is exactly the same until 5th gear - the manual has a longer 5th & 6th gear to account for the lack of the 7th gear (1.08 and 0.88 compared to 1.11, 0.96 and 0.84 in the pdk)
[9:22]
Top speed in 3rd gear manual: ~180kph
Top speed in 3rd gear PDK: ~170kph
Actually 1st-4th gear has the same gear ratio but the final drive is different in the manual which gives it a higher speed
I think Matt was revving it out for longer in the manual which gave him the extra momentum maybe?
@@Loz636 yeah probably

This also shows how great the manual gearbox is :)
Both gearboxes have the same gear ratios up until 5th and 6th gear, where the PDK has shorter gears than the manual, which means that the difference should be see at the top end. Maybe what affected the rolling race at 50mph might have been Yianni's reaction time or just the aero on the GT3 with the big wing in the back.

Sweet gear changing mat, the brake test would have been different if you shifted down mat. As with the auto it will downshift whilst braking.
Brake test on the automatic is better as it shifts down (engine braking).
Matt did not shift down in the manual.
And the GT3 got Carbon-Ceramics while the Touring is specced with steel brakes!
That big wing on the back of the PDK version certainly added a lot of drag. I heard someone describe the Senna's wing as a giant parachute. It also helped on the braking for sure.
5:21 has to be the most interesting bit of this whole video
You guys could have just checked the starting rpm in the various roll races, the point could also be that maybe the 3rd in the manual is longer so you shift later into 4th then the pdk so you keep pulling while the pdk has to shift, which happens really fast but takes a few milliseconds either way. Could also be an aerodynamic factor in there but I'm not sure, would have been interesting to see a full mile development with trap speeds
Love the touring model.
Less parasitic loss in a manual too
Parasitic loss? Please elaborate. I'm curious about that.
@@pokest225 Less drivetrain loss, less interference.

I thought manuals would give a smile to the driver how the hell is yianni smiling to the finish line and matt looking so serious🤣
Yep. Overly serious in fact.
I think it has to do with the level of engagement with each car. In the manual, Mat is fully connected with the car's revs, gear change, and the road. So he's in full concentration there, I think. The PDK allows you to relax a bit because the tranny takes care of the shifting work (most of it)
sometimes people who like cars just enjoy the car rather than being pretentious about whether the car is manual or auto 🤷🤷🤷
It’s the power of loosing 😂😂
