  • All of the Singer sewing machines in this video were metal bodied and with the exception of the Singer Futura their critical inner workings were also made of steel or toughened alloy. These all-metal machines were designed to last a lifetime and many have done just that.
However from the early 1970s onwards, some of the gearing and critical internal parts of many Singer models were made out of plastic and although the machines were technically advanced at that time, they were not designed for repair, maintenance and durability - and as such their working lives have proven to be much shorter.
Many millions of the popular sewing machines that are shown in the video were sold worldwide and many still exist today:
    Singer 12K New Family sewing machine - produced 1867 - 1903
    Singer 15K sewing machine - produced 1890 - 1957
    Singer 66K sewing machine - produced 1907 - 1948
    Singer 99K sewing machine - produced 1923 - 1963
    Singer 128K sewing machine - produced 1912 - 1962
    Singer 185K sewing machine - produced 1958 - 1964
    Singer 191K sewing machine - produced 1957 - 1962
Singer 201K-2 sewing machine with potted motor - produced 1930s/1940s
    Singer 201K Mark I sewing machine - produced 1935 - 1954
    Singer 201K Mark II sewing machine - produced 1954 - 1962
Singer 215G sewing machine. Made in Germany in the 1950s
    Singer 221K Featherweight sewing machine - produced 1933 - 1970
    Singer 306K sewing machine - produced 1954 - 1962
Singer 316G sewing machine. Made in Germany in the 1950s/1960s
    Singer 319K sewing machine - produced 1956 - 1962
    Singer 328K sewing machine - produced 1963 - 1965
Singer 401G sewing machine. Made in Germany 1960 - 1964
Singer 404G sewing machine. Made in Germany 1961 - 1965
Singer Futura 1000 sewing machine circa 1976

@George Styer You familar with the Singer 193q by any chance? I'm looking to purchase one for using as primary machine. I understand it's a mexican made in 60s. However theres no info online. Is it a bad sign that it's so rare? Whats the chance parts will be interchangeable with other more popular models from the era. I don't want to be stuck with a 200 dollar paper weight. Hoping to have a long relationship with it. Thank you

      @@francoisnel5253 Hello
The 193Q is not really well known. I do not have one in my collection. I think this machine comes from the 190 series made in many countries. Bits from the 191B /192 those made in France are much the same so the spares are interchangeable.
The 191 (B) in France is a really well built machine. Lots of spares available and almost a leather machine. If you are buying a machine look at the numbers made !!! this is a good indication of the supply of spares and the quality of the machine.
Tell me what you intend to make and I can advise with the best of my knowledge.

@@georgestyer2153 From what I gather it was made in Mexico. It's quite a well rounded off machine on the eye. The front has a chrome dome cover instead of the flat look of many. I intend to try and stictch through material with thick blankets in between and later make my own clothes. I thought the machine might be stronger than my moms electronic Frick from the late 60s. I cannot find any info on numbers produced and have not come across any other info on that model.

@@francoisnel5253 I will ask a few fellow collectors about this machine. Just a point of interest many of the old 1890 onwards machines were made of really stern stuff and will sew heavy materials. The Singer 15K is really the basis of all the later machines. The Singer 191/2/etc were the forerunners of many later machines 186 etc., Again look for a more common machine to ensure good spares supply. BTW what country are you in?

Thanks for sharing with us these nice pictures of Singer sewing machines. The selection seems to be some of the types produced in Europe only.

The 201K2 was produced with 220v motors in Europe and was similar to the 201-2 produced in America.

Those are some of the finest looking vintage Singers I have ever seen! We many of these machines including a nearly perfect 1871 model 12, and one more that isn't in the video, a 1958 model 320. Once we acquired the 319 and the 320 machines we gave the two 401's we had away because we stopped using them. In fact, the 320 with a flatbed conversion put the 319 back on the shelf. Much easier bobbin access on the 320. Also, everything I have read says the 319 and 320 production stopped in 1961, video says 1962?

Hi, many thanks for your comments regarding the machines.
I didn't come across a 320 during my 'machine restoration' phase but I agree the bobbin access would have been so much easier to that of a 319 and, being a free arm machine it would have been a better machine all round.
Also, I got my dates from ISMACS (which may or may not be correct):

Hi, the thing about old sewing machines is that they can be repaired and maintained as you go along.
The 193 is an all metal machine and apart from the bolt on bits like the electric motor and foot pedal (which can be readily replaced) most bits will last the lifetime of the machine.
I would suspect that the shuttle/hook/bobbin arrangements are compatible with parts for Singer 15 type sewing machines while the thread tension assembly looks like a standard singer part for 99k and as such are probably interchangeable.
Things like the needle plate look to be standard Singer stuff, the face plate and stitch length trim plate may be difficult to come across should you ever need to find them.

The best of the black singers in my view is the 201K - even so, the 15, 66 and 99k are all very good straight stitch (only) sewing machines and will last as long as they are maintained.

Hi, I'm sorry but I don't have these machines any more, however most of my other UA-cam videos already show how each machine will sew through leather.
The majority of domestic sewing machines will sew leather to a greater or lesser extent - on an occasional basis.
A Singer 201K is a good machine for tough materials like leather.
For commercial usage, where professional looking stitches in thick, tough leather are required - an industrial sewing machine is best.

Hi, it looks like your machine was probably made in the Singer factory in St. John’s, Quebec, Canada between 1936 and 1948:
      www.singersewinginfo.co.uk/stjohns/
      singer-featherweight.com/blogs/schoolhouse/singer-sewing-at-the-st-johns-factory-quebec-canada

I'm 75 and I still sew on a 750 Golden Touch & Sew machine. Your statement about the parts is not true. My machine is 50 plus years and although I have replaced one set of gears, it sews as great now as it did right out of the box. If the machine is kept cleaned, oiled and lubed they will last almost a lifetime. Yes, if the drive belt breaks that could be a major problem. I had my drive belt replaced before it broke. That was a simple fix because the whole machine didn't loose its timing. Proper care and maintenance is the life of the machine. I have run my machine everyday for years. No, I don't sew now as I once did but my machine runs like a dream.

    • @agathaLew
      @agathaLew  9 місяців тому

Hi, I'm pleased to hear that your "touch and sew" sewing machine is still going strong and that you care enough about repair and maintenance to keep this rare vintage machine in good running order - happy sewing!
I'm not really sure which statement of mine about parts is not true? Certainly, drive shafts/gears are superior to timing belts and also metal gears are superior to plastic gears - are they not?
      - On many old machines, a broken plastic gear or a snapped timing belt could entail costly repairs (if parts for that machine are actually available) and this may signal the end of life for that particular machine (planned obsolescence).
      Best regards

@@agathaLew I'm not heckling here. Your statement at the end of your video stated machines made after the 70's break you throw them away. I would have changed that to read after the mid 80's might be better.
As an old Singer employee, the gears are not exactly plastic. They were made of neoprene which contained nylon tread mixed with the material used for the gears. The time to change the drive belt is before it breaks. The average life span for that belt was about 40 years. Yes, all these parts are still available. Yes, finding someone to work on one of these machines is difficult "but" repair is available. You might need to ship your machine back to Singer or to several repair shops located across the country.
I would agree the all "steel" gear and gear drive was excellent. My 750 isn't the exception as I know many ladies in my area who running this and newer Touch & Sew machines.
I believe I'm right in saying, any sewing machine will last a lifetime when taken care of. The same applies to any thing mechanical. That said, I did enjoy your video. That brought back many memories for me.
Thank you for responding to my post. In no way did I find fault except for that last 10 or 15 seconds of your video.

      Hi again,
Thank you for your reply, I can now see where the 'not true' issue you raise is coming from & that you have a different personal opinion to me as to the date when Singer stopped making 'lifetime' quality machines (early 1970s versus mid 1980s) - no problem.
Your Touch & Sew sewing machine was made in the period 1970-1975 and I can tell that you are very happy with its durability, quality & performance.

@@agathaLew I surly didn't mean any disrespect. I know that I often come across in that fashion. Both my wife and I sewed making much of what we and our children wore. I worked for Singer for more years and I care to remember.
The entire class of "Slant Needle" machines brought a whole new revelation to sewing. Your work set out in front, not back up under the machine. They were machine way ahead of their time. I could out sell any of the ladies who worked in our store. We were in a huge shopping mall and no one reach my number of sales. I made it look easy because it was easy. I knew how to sew.
I'm old and all retired now. I still do some work on my own machines and yes on a rare occasions I will clean and adjust a machine for someone. I am fortieth to live about 88 miles from a guy who repairs machines for a living. My eye sight isn't so good and my hands shake some so making any number of repairs I just can't do any more. I have most of the repair manuals but I just don't see well enough and my hands are a bit shaky when it comes to some of the turnings that are needed.
I see all this electronic stuff that is being made. I do remember when the Athina 2000 came out and it was trouble. Yes, in the first year they solved 90 percent of the problems. It was not the machine that Singer made 5 years back. After the first Futura's was when the decline started. I have a Futura 900D and it is a good machine but for heavy hard work, my 750 just can't be beat. I also own a 640 Golden Touch and Sew. I have my mom's old 631 G. My mother did free hand monogramming. I have her 2nd 631G as a keep sake.

The 237 is the most underrated Singer machine, IMO. It's not pretty, and it's not fancy - it weighs about 100 lbs! - but it sews like nobody's business and makes the best satin stitch I've ever seen. Love the Class 15, vertical oscillating hook which really gives this machine some teeth.
