  • Beekeeping goes so much better when your smoker keeps making smoke. I'll give several tips to keep your smoker going when you are working your bees. Honey bees respond by smoke because they are no longer able to communicate to other bees. Since honey bees cannot talk to each other, they become very calm and begin cleaning their antennae.
Beekeeping classes are so important because honey bees are facing so many challenges in today's environment. Beekeepers need to know their stuff to avoid losing their hives and their investment in beekeeping. IF you are serious about beekeeping then get serious and take my Ultimate ONLINE beekeeping course. I just went through over a dozen videos and yours was the first to show the grate at the bottom and how it sits properly!
Looks like I need to bend the tabs out on my new smoker. I was wondering and finally know.
    Thank you.

We stuff a wad of grass in the hole when we travel so the wind doesn't get it "blue hot". That's when you burn up the billows when it gets TOO hot.

WOW!!! This was absolutely great!!! I loved the trip down memory lane an all the different old times smokers!!!👍 I am 66 an I had forgotten the old 2 handed billows pump.. when I was??? Dear lord I got to think here… I had to be? 6 ~ 7 or 8 an my grandfather’s ~Father used one just like that!! ( great grandfather) lived in Ohio an had a pond that he ate fish every day from an had all his honeybee hives spread all---- the way around the 2 acre pond an he lived on eggs, fish an comb honey AN lol Drank nothing but Welches grape juice from the swans truck an he lived to be 102!! Grandfather always said his long life was because of what he ate an comb honey.. lol I was a teenager before I knew you could eat honey “ without” eating the wax comb!! Grandfather always told me the comb is what helps lube your insides an was full of vitamins and nutrients. I consume tons of pure honey but I still prefer comb an the honey spread on my toast! An if you would like a piece of gum? Grandfather always had a gallon jar of wax comb to chew on for gum..an I never remember him ever wearing a bee suit tending his bees… A huge hug for a trip down memory lane an for reminding me of my great grandfather!! An I have tried just about anything you can imagine to burn in my smoker. An I got to say my dad‘s old burlap feed bags which he had hundreds of them seem to burn the longest an the smoke is cooler than a lot of things I have tried.. I have got 2 hives the Hate literally hate smoke I use a Spray bottle of sugar water on them to work them 2 hives.. lol the girls are too busy cleaning themselves to worry about little ol’me… But just like anything in life your base starting foundation is always the most important an your steps are true in many things in life just like building a proper campfire 👍 I would give this video a hundred thumbs up if I could coz that is probably the biggest complaint most bee keepers have is the smoker is never lit when you need it! GREAT video …. 😊 ( edited fur a teeny tiny spell boo boo)

Broke one of the smoker legs in the bottom spacer first use. Found a small 1/4" bolt/nuts. Now it empties really easily.
Burlap bag and pine needles work pretty good. Tried the pellets and small piece of fire starter (ones that look like a big match) but doesn't seem to work easily as burlap.
Found old smokers laying around farms when I was young. Mostly in junk piles... wish now I would have saved them. But I didn't get into beekeeping until I was 50 😞

Liked seeing the old smokers. I have 1 in my collection lol.it was either my dad's or grandpa's, so pre 1970s.they would use it for cut outs on old buildings and trees. That's how they collected honey back then.

I found that a hand full of wood pellets used in smokers for cooking with pine shavings filling the remainder of the smoker, I have lit mine at 2pm after work and walked out the next morning and it was still smoking

As always, loved your video. Thanks for sharing your wisdom. I am trying to search back in your videos to find an answer. Last weekend, I watched your September things to do video. I went straight out and followed your guidance.I also removed my slatted bottom board in anticipation of winter. I only removed it from one hive and left the other hive alone. ( not really planned but the other hive was more testy so I left it alone) this week has been a bit cold. Today was warm again and the hive missing the slatted board was flying crazy in front on the hive. Possibly due to less room to come and go? It was just dramatically more activity. No robbing going on that I could tell, it was just lots of flying. A bit like spring and new bees flying .looking for your input! The hive with slatted bottom board was as it always is…. Normal activity.

I take some long green grass and put it at the top of the fuel. This cools the smoke down a but and filters out the sparks. Then the grass helps light the smoker the next time since it dries out with the heat.

Do you have any advice for hives who are 'set off' by smoke? One of mine is agitated by smoke.

Love the smoker collection. I would like to see a video on hive tools. I'm working the hives and put the hive tool down, turn around to get the hive tool and it is gone. Where do they go? must be a hive tool congregation area they go to.

Hi David,we are preparing our bees for winter here in Wales. The apiguard is on and we started feeding five days ago. They have a rapid feeder which we have been filling twice a day .When we changed the apiguard yesterday we notices that most of the frames are now full of syrup. Is this a problem for the queen to find space to lay,if yes what do you suggest?

I have a blow torch. I pack the smoker full then close it up, take the blow torch and heat the sides of the smoker until it turns red and pump the bellows. The fuel ignites inside and produces a bunch of smoke. Keep pumping until you get max smoke. Never goes out!

Hello. I want to add a few here since I didn’t hear your messages. I’m sure you had in previous video, but it’s Cedar chips. Or they might be pine chips. I can’t remember what it is but it small animal bedding. I haven’t been able to keep a smoker going or started, my husband watched a video by a female about cedar chips in the smoker. So we grab some at These chips and they work great. The smoke burned my eyes horribly. I think that’s what they’re doing to the bees because when I smoke them they scurry away quickly and are nowhere to be found. Does anyone have thoughts on the Chips? I’m going to try other thing because I don’t want to cause my little bees pain. However in order to get the bees out of the way they work great
