    Hi Chad. Linear/audio refers to how the resistance changes as you turn the pot. A linear pot will have half the resistance when turned half way. And audio taper pot increase resistance more slow, then faster and faster as you turn the pot, in a logarithmic curve. The reason they use audio pots for volume is because the response of the human ear is logarithmic. A wave of twice the amplitude does not sound twice as loud to the human ear. You need to make it many time the amplitude to double to apparent volume.
    If you use a linear pot it will be very sensitive at lower settings, not so much at higher setting. The difference in volume between 1 and 2 will be much greater than 2 to 3, which will be greater then 3 to 4, and so on. If you use an audio pot (also called a log pot), then you should hear a fairly smooth increase in volume as you increase the pot. Some Marshall amps use a linear pot for the master volume, which is why they're fairly loud at low settings.

    Thanks Chad. I was looking for a way to custom tune a 12 string from a D and D octave to a D and the C below that octave. The harmonica player wants to do When the Levee Breaks. I was doing it in Open E with a capo up to an F but now I can just do a custom tuning. It sounds perfect now.
    I was also able to save Nashville tuning as a custom tuning. All in all it's a very versatile instrument.

      You can also do it directly on the guitar without connecting the guitar to a computer. I’ve had my JTV-59 for 4 years, and I’ve never used Workbench to change the tunings. It’s all described in the manual.

    Changing the resistance pot value to a higher resistance will effectively result in more treble. It's a shame we can't alter these precisely. Linear and Audio taper change the curve at which the volume decreases. You can find charts online that explain this.

    I have a question. Is it possible to detune the strings slightly? Not by a whole semitone, but something that would simulate tuning to Concert Pitch A = 445 rather than 440? Some songs are recorded in perfect tune, and it would be great to be able to play along with them without having to return the guitar (which is after all, one of the reasons for buying a Variax in the first place)

    • @ChadHuskey
      @ChadHuskey  3 роки тому +1

      Yes you can do this in Workbench. Go to the parallel pitch tab and set the mix to 100% for all strings and you can adjust the cents.

      @@ChadHuskey given that works for the 440Hz to 445Hz, if you still would like to have the 12 string at 445Hz, then you would have to use a pitch shifter at +12 and mix at 50%?

      @@zakklee2556 I belive that would be correct. That the 12 string should follow the tuning of altered pitch, but I haven't tried that specific setup to confirm that.

    Hi Chad - finally got the green light on my USB connection - it downloaded the 60 items from Workbench and it changes models when I flip the model knob. BUT - when I go to each model whether electric or acoustic I don't hear a change in tone or guitar AT ALL through my amp. I have sound but it is just a generic tone of the Variax Guitar itself not changing to the different guitars. Did I miss something?

      Just to confirm 100% that what's coming though your amp is the Variax signal or the magnetic pickups, turn the tuning knob to an alternate tuning and see if it changes.

    Hi Chad. I am looking to buy my first Variax. The only reason is to play- sing songs in original key but let's say 4 semitones down.Standard E to Standard C tuning for example.Question is:Once I pitch shift,virtual capo or alternate tuning is the sound "natural". 99% of time playin' at home thru tube amp and impulse responses on headphones and recording.If money is not an issue witch guitar from Line 6 would you buy in 2020 ? I tried all pitch shift pedals and for chords transposing all are the joke .My main use of the technology would be "virtual capo" .Any advice,suggestions?Thanks man.

    • @ChadHuskey
      @ChadHuskey  4 роки тому +2

      Me personally I prefer the jtv series, particularly the 69 and 59. I've always been a strat and les paul kind of guy. But the quality is good on both of them.
      The Shuriken guitars are great too, I'm just a bit more old school in my preferences I guess.
      My experience with the virtual capo is that +/- 2-3 semi tones is the most realistic. 4 is on the limit of what I use it for.
      However I think it does do better going down in pitch than up. I can get away with more semi tones lower than higher before I start to notice anything.
      But you do start to get a little warble effect (minor, but it can be noticeable in critical listening) when doing 4+ semi tones.
      I would suggest if at all possible to demo one and see what you think.
      I find it to be perfectly usable live.
      I've done hotel California where it was an acoustic capoed up 7 frets and it worked great in a band context.
      I hate to not give you a definitive yes/no answer, but I wanted to give you my most honest opinion.

      Is there a way to edit the tuning presets on the Alt Tuning knob through Workbench HD? Or can those only be done on the guitar itself? Hi Chad,
    I just got my Variax 69 and wanted to know how to physically connect it to my computer to do all the stuff that you are doing. I bought it used, and It only came with a Midi cable.

    • @ChadHuskey
      @ChadHuskey  Рік тому

      You're in luck :) ua-cam.com/video/agUn3VuG7JE/v-deo.html
      The cable you have most likely isn't a MIDI cable as the guitar doesn't have a MIDI connection. It's essentially a cat 5 cable.
      What you'll need is the Variax USB interface. You connect the Variax to that, then the interface to your computer via USB. ALSO you need to have the 1/4" cable connected to the Variax and battery charged.
      The reason is because the cable going to the USB interface doesn't power on the guitar.
      But watch the video link I put above and that should explain everything.

      Are you speaking about Workbench HD, or the legacy version of Workbench for pre JTV variax guitars?
      I know workbench HD works on Windows 10, so I'm assuming you're referring to the older version.
      If that's the case the only suggestion I could give you is open a ticket with Line 6 to see if they have any workarounds.

    • @IKnowAGuyLLC
      @IKnowAGuyLLC 3 роки тому

      @@ChadHuskey Yeah. I’m a lefty and I have two older version variaxs. So that’s my issue then?

    • @ChadHuskey
      @ChadHuskey  3 роки тому +2

      Gotcha. I figured that might be the case, and yes that's most likely the issue.
      I'd still recommend opening a ticket with Line 6 to see what they say.
      Thinking about other workarounds what I would personally try is to setup a Windows XP virtual machine.
      I don't know if you've used virtual machines before, but it's basically like running a computer inside of a computer. The virtual machine is software only and "borrows" the hardware connections on your computer, such as USB ports.
      I haven't used these in a long time, but one of the better free virtual machine pieces of software from what I remember is Virtual Box by Oracle.
      I also think there are free copies of Windows XP available to download.
      If you did this you could run the VM on your PC and install the older version of workbench there.
      I haven't messed with VM's in years, but used to a lot when I did IT work. So I know it's very doable, but I'm way out of the loop on the latest in the VM world.
      I don't know how comfortable you are with tech, and if you aren't really into computer stuff this would probably be a lot of trouble to go to setting up for just the one application. But it should be doable.
      I have no doubt there's lots of UA-cam videos out there on how to do this.
      I haven't messed around with this stuff in years, so I won't be any help with the step by step setup, but if you want to get workbench running it might be worth looking into.
      Hope this helps.

    I came here because I m not satisfied the factory setups of my Velorex (standard) in gigging context. The acoustics are bass heavy, the volume difference between the alnico pups and the piezo is too much, and I also feel some dynamic issues when playing the piezo.

    • @ChadHuskey
      @ChadHuskey  Рік тому +2

      One thing I'd recommend on the acoustic models is to play around with the tone knob. This adjusts the virtual mic placement on the guitar and can make a difference.
      Personally I use a parametric EQ with hi/lo cuts on my presets when I play the acoustic models to take out any unwanted frequencies.
      I do this with a standard piezo electric/acoustic guitar as well. Even the Martin I own sounds pretty lackluster without proper EQ.
      Playing an acoustic live without EQ, Compression, and Reverb is just unthinkable lol
      As far as balancing the volume you can go into Workbench and raise the volume of the presets on the guitar. Also if you lower the magnetic pickups it will bring the volume down.
      If you're interested I do have a tweaked bundle on the Line 6 marketplace that updates/improves the tones of the guitar as well as volume balances everything across the board.
