Hi from the Argentinian Patagonia. Your video is very informative. I'm going to have my house built from a 40-feet-long shipping container. I think I'm going to use the pier foundation because it is the cheapest. Some people who built their home say that if you put some piers just along the middle part of the base of the container, it becomes more stady and stable and you don't feel the floor bending as you walk inside it. Thanks for this video. I searched this information as I am preparing the foundations from a previous design of house, for the container house I am currently working on.
I am using footing design #4, because that is what the engineer specified for previous design. It was to be solid earth house requiring over 100 tonne of earth to build.
I am now satisfied that these footings are more than adequate for the container house.

I'm enjoying your videos immensely. I'm currently building a garage/workshop connecting three 40' high qube shipping containers. I decided on shipping containers because the cost of a traditional building in my area was cost prohibitive. I took a slightly different approach to the foundation, after building a retaining wall on two sides and leveling the field we compacted the soil and laid a 6" bed of crushed stone for drainage and compacted it we then used 4"×8"×16" concrete blocks to level the containers one at a time. I'm going to allow them to settle and do any additional leveling if needed before locking them together. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your videos!

2. How much were your containers?
3. How long do you anticipate your structures lasting? (25yrs is the max, I hear)
4. Where you buy your containers from?

Thanks! I thought the trench foundation was going to be my least expensive option, so thanks for pointing out the pier version. I didn't think about the container having span strength.
Railroad ties ! Brother ! That is what you want ! Bolt them. To the contanior bottom and you have a life boat as well as your container home !
So a friend and I got piers dug/poured and even had one for the center of each side span... but the driver had a helluva time getting the container to my place and I don't think he really knew what he was doing. He had it on the first set of piers and was doing pretty well, but he turned the truck (for godknowswhy) and the whole container turned with it. He pulled over the piers and ended up getting the container all whopperjawed and it wasn't going to sit on ANY of the other piers. It was a mess. We threw logs and cinder blocks under it so we could get it off the truck and I could get my floor jack under it later. I got it leveled and put 16x16x3.5 concrete blocks under the corners, but it was WORK. The ground isn't flat at my place, so I wanted something easier to level than railroad ties. If I had been setting it some place flat, I sure would have gone that route.
I have footage of the driver and all the issues we had... I think I'm going to put together a video and post it. It won't really "go" with my channel, but I have 8 followers, so it probably doesn't matter. :)

Functional Yum what Si the cost
"Timber Foundation" is not a decade+ solution. If you need decade+ performance, try casting concrete blocks with rebar. I had great success with it in Texas, where loamy, weak soil and horrific downpours are common.
Make sure you mount the container so that - 1) your building can withstand highest expected winds,... and 2) so that rain water does not weep or run into the steel/concrete interface, cuz the steel will dissolve, in a few years.

You could have strip/trench foundation with entry ways so you could go under your containers and do plumbing or other work. Another, thing we can do is to build small door on the container floor that lets you crawl under the container.

I was going to run angle iron were u leave the 1'ft on each side and have the containers run on the angle iron and run support beam every 10'ft across almost like a bed frame on top of the foundation footings.😊lock on to that .

Great video but I wish you had given suggestions for which foundation is best based on climate. My understanding is peir or slab is most suitable and will hold up for years and can withstand strong winds, floods, snow, etc. Please advise or anyone's suggestion.

For the strip foundation, how is sagging of the container prevented?

its all about maintenance, just prevent rusting and your house will last a bit longer.
I'd consider alternatives if it is placed close to saltwater, but they should survive rain pretty good.
Can you use aerated concrete to make a strip foundation for a 40' high cube? Can you use aerated concrete beams to fashion the cross supports for a pier foundation?
