That was a big block of glue. Hide glue is good because you can easily reverse it. But that was enough glue to do some cabinet making, and veneering (where hide glue is the best). Spray is fine, also a Browns Hide Glue in a small bottle would have been easy to use. For next time, try sanding the poly down with wet dry paper to remove the high gloss, then go to finer w/dry paper. Finish with rubbing compound or polish. The finish is outstanding and less plastic looking. I like that you put the prev owner info and your own under the drawer. I always feel the previous owners would appreciate the love shown their tools. I rebuild a lot of tools and use them. I look forward to them being used when I am gone. It's like leaving a legacy, even if you are not known.
I live between St.Louis and Fredricktown in Missouri and have known several people over the years that worked for Emerson Electric. Crazy to see something that hits so close to home.
Nice job! I only used 2 coats on mine, I rubbed the first coat with ultra fine steel wool and turpentine. Came out like glass. The hide glue is original and very traditional, thats what they use. I used titebond wood glue.
That’s why I tried it just to give it a shot. I used 3m spray adhesive on my 11 drawer and after using both I can say the spray glue holds fine and is about 100 times easier to use.
Halligan142 yep I was worried about what to use on the steel bottoms, wasn't sure if spray glue would hold cloth... Ended up using the wood glue for everything since mine needed to be totally rebuilt (it was in a flood)
Looks great. Way to save that old sticker, it adds character 😁. I honestly had a hard time not making a joke about getting "felt" though 🤣. Very cool that you put the old timer's obituary in there, respect man 👊. Thanks for the share😁.
No, no, no. I think you don't quite understand. You can show some finishing. We don't mind if your work is tedious, as long as the video is not repetitive for us. Sometimes, it's nice to watch someone work--all the better while we don't have to do anything but watch at a distance that's safe from any kind of perceivable toil on our part. Thanks for the videos. I really wanted a wooden tool chest, but I thought I would have to move, so I just bought a metal Kennedy one, the small one that many people have. BTW, the mirror on machinist's toolboxes was often there to get metal bits from one's eye.
The nice thing about hide glue is that it is easily reversible. Unfortunately spray adhesive isn't really. (It is but it is a royal pain in the...) However yeah you can pick up titebonds hide glue in a bottle and ready to go from Amazon for around $10. Great job though man and very nice touch putting the prior owners info in it.
awesome! job man I just bought 3 of the harbor freight ones took them apart and give them a proper nitrocellulose lacquer refinish also replacing all the hardware with Gerstner going to paint them translucent tobacco I am part time Luther so this should keep me entertained .. for a bit need them badly to organised all the small guitar hardware .. love your work especially the fact you kept its character intact!
Advantage of using hide glue is a long open time and reversible. Reversibility is impotent for the future person that needs to restore that box. Hide glue is readily available at any woodworker supply place. You can also get it in liquid form. I do agree that the spray glue work great. I use it myself on many projects.
I'd agree, but as you say everyone's tastes are different. Still an interesting video. Adding the previous owners obit was a nice touch of respect. Any real wood finishing experts would think I'm a hack, but I like wet sanding with 600 grit or finer with the finish I'm using then wiping as much as possible off across the grain. It takes many many coats, but that slowly fills the grain dead level and leaves what almost looks like a oiled & polished semi matt finish with the protection of the poly.
@@turningpoint6643 so many finishes oil lacquer varnish paint etc almost enough in fact to suit all tastes and that is before you list the gloss matt satin options.😉
the finish came out perfect! i just bought one as well and i will follow your steps with it, thanks for sharing.

It turned out excellent! Kudos for a job well done.

Good to preserve the box but for my taste i would have knocked the high gloss back a little but each to their own.

Dude it's hard to beat a 3M product. Why did you not replace the plastic stamped out words on the front right side of the box.
Awesome restro! Thanks
When its full i wouldnt trust the handle
Nice work
very nice.
Looked good.
Great job 👍🏻.
why put a sticker on that gorgeous box
It was on there originally and judging by the rest of the tags it was a project the former owner had worked on.
Job well done.
enjoyed....very nice
NICE !
Thank you, that was interesting.
I guess it is quite randomly asking but does anybody know a good place to watch new movies online?
@Anthony Edison I would suggest FlixZone. Just google for it :)
