Brilliant, worked for me. Spent hours trying to workout why my system wouldn’t reboot after changing the BIOS to UEFI, I didn’t know about the disk management side of things!
@@luis_laurent I had checked to see if my PC could upgrade to Win11 from Win10. I had to change the security settings in the BIOS,( Microsoft have a tool to se if you can upgrade the OS)however I couldn't. After researching, changing my HDD from MBR to GPT was the problem. After following the instructions in the video I went into the BIOS again and was able to change the security settings with no problem. I hope that helps you. Regards.
DUDE THANKSSSSS!!! I was ready to embark on a huuuuuuuuuuuge journey to change the system drive. Would not thought that it was possible to change the fileformat without deleting windows! THANKS MAN!
Thank you so much! This was quick and easy. I was reading so many articles before I finally found this video. At first I was worried I did something wrong because I already changed the settings to UEFI only in my BIOS but then I looked again, restarted and now I have GPT.
this won't work in cases where windows wasn't install with the uefi boot option the tutorial is not clear and if you have valuable information on your PC you should be careful
For me it worked fine. I had a Legacy bios. Of course any data you care about should always be backed up, and also: it's good to watch multiple tutorials before you make the decision. The legacy to UEFI bios change happens after you convert the disk not before. (Right?)
Converted my 'C' Drive to GPT following your instructions and now I see that I can upgrade to Windows 11. Thanks for the tutorial, saved me from having to take my pc into the shop to pay someone to do this for me. Awesome.
This worked perfectly. I already had TPM2.0 and secure boot enabled, but couldnt install windows 11. I followed your guide and changed my boot option from UEFI and legacy to UEFI only and now i can install windows 11. Thank you!
Awesome!!! This is what i have been looking for. I almost plan to paid for miniTool to convert my OS to GPT. With your guide, now my gaming PC is ready for windows 11. You are the best. 🥳
You just turned me into a computer wizz kid.. my family think I'm a genius but we both know it was your tuition that made me this way.. kind regards and thank you for the easy to follow video.. yes I'm 53 and I refer to all film and movie clips as video😂
It worked great for me! One machine had 2 recovery partitions that I had to remove before the mbr2gpt would run. The other worked perfectly! After struggling with the issue of not being able to boot to windows and then finding out in some MB you have to install a Graphics card and enable CMS to legacy before you can boot to windows to be able to perform the mbr2gpt. His instructions here were perfect!!!
In this condition is easily & successfully convert because mbr disk has only one partition If your mbr disk has more than 3 partitions you will meet big problem , then mbr2gpt.exe don’t permit to convert, it will show message failed !!!!
My God, by far the easiest way to do this. Great video. Expertly explained. No need to download other windows apps like some videos told me to do. Thanks for this!
when i typed mbr2gpt /validate /disk:4 /allowFullOS it gave me an error disk sector size is: 512 bytes? I had to go to computer management and shrink the C drive by 51200 then ran the validate process again and it worked.
This video acutally worked thank God Almighty I have been trying to do this for a whole day after reinstalling CPU and then system couldnt boot so I had to switch to CSM and then found out GPT would work for the UEFI mode and this video solved it all thank you
Thank you! This came in handy when trying to clone an old 1TB MBR HDD onto a 4TB SSD. I found out the hard way that trying to clone a MBR drive without first converting to GPT results in an unbootable clone drive.
What to do about converting the other physical drives was never mentioned. Since it wasn't addressed, the presumption is that nothing needs to be done. Besides the OS disk, I have 2 other physical drives controlled by Windows Storage Spaces.
I've been at this all night and it still says cannot find room for the EFI system partition. Its a brand new 18tb drive and I copied my 256 boot drive to it. MS and windows just suck. I give up.
MBR2GPT: Attempting to validate disk 1 MBR2GPT: Retrieving layout of disk MBR2GPT: Validating layout, disk sector size is: 512 bytes Disk layout validation failed for disk 1
By the way. The UEFI boot option in the newer asus motherboards can be found in BIOS-> Boot-> CSM (Compatibility Support Module)-> Boot Device Control. I have a asus rog strix B450f gaming motherboard and there is where i found my UEFI options.
Thanks for the information. I have two older PCs that the BIOS did not have the option. One booted fine the other failed to boot. I was able to recover the failed PC with full disk image restore.
Hello, I have two drives, one HDD the laptop came with and an ssd to which I installed windows 5 years ago and is working perfectly. mbr2gpt does not work as it says disk layout validation failed. There is a partition in my hdd of aboyut 550MB which is used by system, maybe it is the culprit and it has boot partition? How can I make it run? Thank you
Can I have one drive gpt and the others mbr without messing up data or losing data on any other drives or the gpt one because I'm planning to clone a 2tb to 3tb
Thanks! I followed it to the "T" and it was very useful. I ended up having to shrink my SSD down to about 200MB in the disk partition due to the validation step not working and it worked flawlessly afterward...
Hi there. I bought a refurbished Dell desktop from Best Buy and can't upgrade to Win 11. I'm set to Legacy in the BIOS, and before changing that I tried converting from MBR to GPT using this method and it says Cannot find OS partition for Disk 0
if you are getting stuck on " trying to shrink the OS partition," then here is what you should do. Close command prompt Right-click on " my pc" and select properties(This will open the " about" settings tab) Next, click on "system protection" under related settings ( down below or to the right of the page) it will show that you have system protection turned on on disk 0 Click on that drive, then "configure", then disable system protection" No go back and retry the video method. Even with this my command prompt was trying to shrink for about 5 seconds before it finished
I have covered my SSD to gpt, and it looks good, but can't boot from it. In Uefi boot priority, the drive has the name: (PO: OCZ-VERTEX2) the drive I can boot from does not have the letters PO: how do I change this? Thanks for the good explanation.
I can't get my disk to validate like it shows. I've done this on other PCs and it worked like a charm. This one is not so easy. It says it can't find the OS. Well, I'm in the OS, what is wrong?
what if i want to also convert Disk1 and Disk 2? Do i need to put the MBR2GPT file in those disks? cause it worked for Disk0 but not for Disk 1 and 2. please help
Is it true that this only works on a windows system disk? I have a external drive that somehow is now MBR and I want to Convert it back to GPT with hopes of recovering files. There are paid partition managers out there that claim to do it, but looking for a free alternative
- "Disk layout validation failed for disk 0." -> C:\Windows\setuperr.log -> "Too many MBR partitions found, no room to create EFI system partition." - MBR2GPT tool does not support more than three (3) partitions in the MBR partition table, and you should not have any extended/logical partition. All three partitions must be primary partitions.
😃😍🤩 Thank you very much I appreciate a good Command line tech teacher , I too wasted time watching how to hatchet my OS when all I had to do was buy the module for my gigabyte MoBo and then take a lesson from the Master 🍾😁
Huge thumbs up man! Thank you for clarifying and telling how to do the steps. Now if only I understood what actually changed here xD I feel like unless you are an absolute tech savy, you are just doing what needs to be done, but overall I'm being clueless what this gpt partition style differs from mbr xd
Short answer is Old vs New filesystem. You can have 2tb partitions on Mbr but 9,8ZB (9.8 billion TB) on gpt. 4patitions mbr 128partitions gpt. Mbr bIos vs Gpt UEFI.
On Window 11 Pro and this wouldn't work for me. No matter what I do the MBR2GPT.exe won't launch. Apparently this is a problem that others have also encountered.

One of the reasons could be that your disk is split in more than 3, I had 4 partitions and after I unified two of them it worked fine
By the way. The UEFI boot option in the newer asus motherboards can be found in BIOS-> Boot-> CSM (Compatibility Support Module)-> Boot Device Control.
I have a asus rog strix B450f gaming motherboard and there is where i found my UEFI options.
Life saver this fixed my issue with meeting the requirements for windows 11 upgrade since secure boot wouldn't work as I had legacy boot configuration
Outstanding video. Super-easy to follow your directions and greatly appreciated the help. Worked perfectly! Thank you.

Does it only need to be the drive with the os or all drives?
If you did it did you have to format the other drives?
thank you,i needed this to enable Amd SAM
You can also go into disk management before you restart the machine to make sure it says GPT disk
