  • On a late September day in 2015, three women were brutally killed in Renfrew County, Ontario. And now 59-year-old Basil Borutski stands convicted of those crimes, the details of which he revealed in a rambling five hour interrogation in which he cast himself as victim. The truth is that Borustki had been well-known to police for years. How did the system that’s supposed to protect women go so disastrously wrong? Gillian Findlay investigates, with revealing interviews with family members, friends of victims and witnesses ... and excerpts from the Borutski confession.

The moment he refused to serve that protective order is a red flag so big that it could be spotted from the surface of the moon. He should have been remanded back into custody with that refusal, because it screams "I REFUSE to comply, and will terrorize this woman again at the first opportunity". But no, they let him go, and then the parole officer compounded that grievous error in legal judgement by his own stupidity.
This is a case where foresight was as crystal clear as hindsight, and the legal system ignored the warning signs. They are complicit in the deaths of all 3 women. They are complicit in the pain this killer foisted upon their families and loved-ones. They. Are. Complicit.

The court ORDERED him to attend a counseling group that met in a township that they had ORDERED him not to enter? No excuse for his actions, but in this part of it he was damned if he did and damned if he didn't...

And the reason it would take that long is because I would like an introduction to all those that are in the jury. Every fight hes in he feels wronged. Always. Was charged with assault of our 14 year old son. Beat some older guy up once, than again once released as he went and found him. He showed up in a rage and smashed the windows in trying to take our daughter, a psychiatrist reported him as unstable, has history of owning illegal firearms and yet... still hasn't been locked up.....Canada has got some major improvements to make. Imagine how many people absolutely weren't surprised when they heard about what happened. How many people knew he was eventually gonna snap and kill someone maybe several people? But if some concerned citizens reached out to some bad folks and had ole Basil put to rest years ago they'd be considered as guilty of murder as Basil eventually became. If we have a judicial system of the people, by the people, and for the people shouldn't we have some kind of recourse for dealing with these psychopaths? Yes there are obvious reasons why you cannot under any circumstances allow vigilante murder but what if the investigation into the murder of say Basil be conducted in a way that once its determined that this was concerned citizens simply exterminating a ticking time-bomb, the investigation's focus would continue with that in mind? Obviously calling it a slippery slope would be an understatement but why do we as a society just sit and wait for these animals to eventually start killing people?

Wow, shows how accustomed we are getting. Maybe that's the problem. Ppl like us, need to speak out more. Fight for new laws, etc.

      Sounds young, naive, immature.
      Ever kill anyone?
I know that kind of retribution sounds simple. Take a life, have yours taken. It's just not that simple.
Capitol punishment doesn't work as a deterrent and most people affected by violence find forgiveness to be the only way to find closure so they can grieve and accept their new reality. They aren't forgiving the offender for the offenders sake. They forgive for their own peace of mind, so they can move on.
You have to be closer to the situation before espousing opinions on capitol punishment.
In my 50 years I have lost friends to murder, drunk driving and misadventure.
I know what I am talking about. Do you?

+Snowmansnow Snowman I agree with ALMOST everything you said except that I believe adults who torture and kill children with 100% certainty should be ‘put to sleep’. Not 25 years of appeals and this and that. The clearest cut of cases where the guilty party/s is found via the most solid of evidence; then....bedtime.

Jared Burgess, Yeah, kids. That's touchy. Even though I am against the death penalty I've struggled with the thought.
As a father, he's a dead man if I find him.
Funny thing is, I have known parents who lost a child to someone else's actions and they didn't want revenge. They wanted justice. Others lie in wait and get revenge.
I guess we don't know, 'till it happens, what we would do.
Thank God I never had to find out for myself.

These are the women I live for, those who couldn't escape like I did or who didn't get out in time. How do you beat an innocent woman, tell her she took the beating for his other women, and then have the nerve to say you're innocent caring and good? LOL.

RayneSaltair Right, but don't forget, he never hit any women, and of course was taking the beatings, cowering from his wife. And he would NEVER lie...most importantly, he didn't murder anyone. .he killed them..so he's in jail for what again! ? Lol he's a joke. So sad nobody protected the world from this "herb".

Again, a criminal justice system more sensitive to the rights of the criminal than the victim. "The judge by law couldn't take into consideration the previous episodes of violence against other women." What conceivable justification could there be for such an asinine law? Three innocent women died because of this misguided law!

Because con men consciously try to say and do all the right things. The 'con' in 'con-man' stands for confidence. They say all the right things in order to gain the confidence of their target. A man who isn't a con-artist who is trying to court a woman will, no matter how great he is, say and do some things that are a turn-off. Con-men won't do that. They exploit the tendency for relatively normal adults to feel that they deserve a perfect partner. Single middle-aged adults are particularly vulnerable because they have spent a lifetime dealing with less-than-perfect partners who inevitably left their lives. They're now in a stage in their lives in which they are not willing to 'settle' for a partner. They don't want a 'fixer-upper', or someone with 'baggage', some of which of course every normal middle-aged adult will have acquired along the rocky roads of life. So that leaves them open to be the perfect target for romance-based con-men: Since they are waiting for Mr. Perfect to show up, and since Mr. Perfect doesn't exist, the only person who could possibly show up is a con-man pretending to be Mr. Perfect.

Rata 4U: Well I would think that most if not all con-men have narcissistic personality disorder. At least the successful ones would. But being narcissistic does not automatically mean one has to take advantage of others, or be violent. Those are choices people make regardless of where they fall on the personality disorder spectrum.

I dont understand Canada's penal system. He murders three women in cold blood. Searching for a gun before hand says it was premeditated. Then Canada gives him a sentence with eligibility for parole. I have seen multiple 5th Estate documentaries and Canada's sentencing leaves its citizens in danger.
