- Senior Conservatives face mounting pressure to describe Lee Anderson’s attack on Sadiq Khan as “Islamophobic” as the row over his comments entered its fifth day.
Ministers repeatedly declined to use the term to describe the former Tory deputy chairman’s comments, with Home Office minister Michael Tomlinson forced to deny that he and his colleagues had been instructed not to use the word after refusing multiple times to say what had been wrong with Mr Anderson’s comments.
Facing questions from broadcasters on Tuesday, Mr Tomlinson refused 11 times to explain why he thought Mr Anderson’s comments were “wrong”, with LBC host Nick Ferrari terminating their interview early saying he was “unable to answer a question”.
His Home Office colleague Tom Pursglove also refused to use the term, telling Times Radio: “I don’t think Lee personally is racist but what he said was unacceptable.”
The Prime Minister and others have condemned Mr Anderson’s comments, in which he claimed “Islamists” and “got control” of the Mayor of London, as “wrong” but have so far shied away from calling them “Islamophobic”.
Isabel Oakeshott says a “fringe element” of some pro-Palestine marches do not share British values of tolerance and are “blatantly antisemitic”.

Why was Isobel given so little time to speak? Vanessa, supposedly the host, shamelessly and endlessly monopolised the conversation under the guise of asking a question. She and the other opponent were given an unfair amount of time, during which they went off-topic for most of it.
I wish that Isobel, speaking so clearly and concisely in her usual disciplined way, was our Prime Minister. I noticed Khan reeled off a number of religions and places of worship in his latest responses, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, etc. and mosque, etc. but never once uses the words 'Christian' or 'churches' in what is a Christian country. Under normal circumstances, I don't usually watch Ms Feltz programme, but made an exception as I saw that Isabel Oakeshott was speaking and I was pleased that I did, for Isabel spoke complete sense, say what most people in this country are thinking, unlike the other two guests. Working as a window cleaner in NW London I was mugged once and had a further three failed attempts to Rob me.
This experience never stopped me working but I always had to be aware when I was working my shop round and leaving the vicinity.
At one stage at least once a month small groups of yobs would try to intimdate me when working.Another time a guy came back to the shopping parade with a ten inch blade looking for me because I stood up to him earlier .Luckily one of my customers had seen him and warned me.
Did i feel safe? What do you think. Reported one incident where these guys said they would cut me up bad. The police said bearing in mind that this is my living with s mortgage to pay. I should run away and if I defended myself I would be the one arrested even though the police knew who these particular yobs were.
