The Cambrian is very close to my heart, my mum coming from Oswestry. My grandad was always talking about the Cambrian Railway. When we were staying with them, and it was my bedtime, and I'd to go upstairs, he'd always say "up Talerddig bank!".

Nice. The Cambrian is one of my favourites too. I hope to see goods traffic return to the Cambrian soon.

An elderly ex-fireman from Aberystwyth told me that they were able to catch tablets at 40 mph, which crews from the midlands couldn't manage (and so ran late on visiting specials). I wouln't like to try it.

+Stephen Smith Bloody Hell! Better data Tokens/Tablets as nowadays on ERTMS. Hats off to them!

Yes I was amazed too. And imagine being a fireman who dropped the tablet - how long would the driver take before halting the train and getting it back to the point where the tablet was dropped!.... and then looking for it smewhere in the grass? Living with that risk must have taken lots of nerve on the part of firemen! Respect.

+Stephen Smith 40 mph!!?? An amazingly talented group people. That's about 60 kmh I think (I am an Aussie).

      How Very Dare You
That's about right. Back then the tokens were clipped into a hoop which crew would catch by passing their forearms through the hoop (leld by signaler) while holding a hoop to be caught by the signaller in the same way. I imagine that doing this eight or nine times in a journey with two or three journies a day would leave some sore bruises!

17:51 I would hardly considor the ejector ruining Edward Thomas' appearance I for one think it looks interesting in her appearance. While she may not be wearing it in preservation at least shes in Corris Railway Red now that looks fantastic on her, even if we only saw her like that before recently going under overhaul

Wonderful to see those two children ride on the footplate. Bad Health and Safety practice ....but a great start to lives of enterprise and risk free of the perverse need to be ‘safe’.

My comment was to draw attention to the stark contrast between activities permitted in the 50s and 60s but not permitted now.
I accept that Health and Safety regulations these days do lead to a reduction in injury and death, but on the other hand regulations do forbid many activities that can be safe if properly supervised.

@@peterpan1435 I wonder if cutting steam locomotives for scrap with torches by teenagers could be considered "safe if supervised". It would be great education for the young lads to understand how old polluting traction can be recycled for scrap metal. Pat Whitehouse could instruct the boys how to cut the locos and film the action!

    • @jacobwoods8738

Being a Caledonian 4-4-0 it uses air brakes, and many turntables were converted from manual to air operated. Vacuum wouldn't work as well, but air works fine.
