I hope the railways can reclaim the prestige they had in 1959 with a large percentage of freight traffic as well as more passenger journeys. The stupid inflated energy prices and diesel prices should realise this

I've especially wanted to mention that the classes of the 57OO class pannier tank engines as well as the 14XX class auto tank engines represent a pair of Great Western tank engines named Duck and Oliver who work on a branch line on Sir Topham Hatt's railway known as the Little Western that runs along the coast from Tidmouth to Arlsebrugh where it'll meet up with the Arlsedale miniature railway!

Many lines closed because they only had one or two trains a day. If they had a service at regular intervals, at clock face times, many services might have been saved. One line closed under Beeching serving two medium-sized towns had six trains each way. In one direction, if not both, had a three-hour gap with no trains, then two within half an hour!

That area might not have attracted many tourists then. but I'm darned sure if that line had become a heritage railway then tourism would have jumped twenty fold if not more. I live near there and its a very pretty Valley and well worth the investment

What I find facinating is the children's enthusiasim for the passing steam trains. It's so sad that this isn't reflected for today's railways. Nothing exciting about modern day british rail trains and today's children have much different thowaway interests.

absolutely. I used to lived beside the ex GCR line and we used to wave at the trains and drivers and passengers would wave back. we used to be having tea as the northbound Master Cutler went past and events at Wembley always used to produce specials from other regions.. small wonder with my father and sister working for the railways that I became a bit obsessive..

They should. Because a train driver is well paid now so they should aspire to this

A railway branch line like that today would be great. Electric rather than diesel.

@1:33:11, the narrator has mispronounced the surname of the SECR/SR CME. It's Mansell (like the 1992 British Formula 1 World Champion, not 'Mornsell'.
The BBC, with its vast resources, really should have got that right given that the speaker is their man, Peter Woods.

A hateful era of class ridden supremacy, all of the great machines shown here were designed by great engineers and maintained and driven by the working class. The class laughed at and despised by the managers, stockbrokers and aristocracy of the time. Good riddance to those days.

@@SteveNC61 Thank goodness Beeching closed down uneconomic lines similar to the ones shown. He has saved the country billions.
Some of those engines looked very old and clanky. Just about ready for scrapping.

Read Henry George's Progress and Poverty. Also Andrzej Lobaczewski's Political Ponerology. We need a future denied to us by Elitists and their Bolshevik parasites
