  • From Eric Clapton's "History of Eric Clapton" album also featuring Bobby Whitlock, Carl Radle, Jim Gordon performing 2 versions of Tell The Truth..the second one is a jam. I recommend you crank it up! (sorry about the few seconds of silence in the beginning and between songs, I'm new at converting albums)

Jam starts at 3:36. Had this album as a kid. Lost it at some point but never forgot the jam! It was hard to find. Thanks for the upload (and the pix)-great memories. I really used to go into a deep trance with this workout, as a kid!

I wore this album out. Amazing compilation of Clapton's guitar playing. There's some awesome magic on the slower version of this song with just Eric on guitar.

I'm on my second copy. Largely from over-playing this one-two punch. Looove this song.

Thanks so much for this long jam version - can't seem to get it on Spotify or anywhere else! Such a shame cos IMO it's about the last exciting thing Clapton did & it's nearly 50 years old now. Since then he's been coasting, giving us much to admire, but less to love.

Dominos live at the Fillmore has a very long, slow in the pocket version that is sublime.

The second one is probably the best example of work "left in the studio" is often the real masterpiece. They were evidently just laying down tracks and about four and a half minutes into the recording, things started to "cook". The free falling guitar descends always used to give me spinal "tingles". Unlike the first version, produced by Phil Spector (I believe), this one (produced by Tom Dowd) is just Clapton, Allman, Whitlock, Radle and Gordon. A great band with the tragic rock and roll element thrown in. I have enjoyed it over 40 years!

Duane wasn't on this track. All the 27th August 1970 sessions were just the four Dominos. Duane and Eric did do a 2 minute acoustic version of "It Hurts Me Too" on this day, but that's the only Duane involvment.

No Duane Allman on this version.

That's definitely the Phil Spector version, recorded at Apple, I believe, in June 1970. I'm looking forward to hearing the jam. This was definitely a great jam band-just listen to Apple Jam on All Things Must Pass (their first recorded work).

I got mine in the early 80's and wore the grooves out! People today can't appreciate how HARD it was (in some backwoods swamp) to get classics. It is everywhere now (plus out takes and alternates), free, or ready to be downloaded, but I remember when the ''right'' LP revealing itself as I flipped through the bins was an ultimate rush! This one was a double LP so I was ecstatic. The ride home never took longer! SO glad I came up that way-it made it all mean so much more.

I found the Polydor CD pair from Japan, bloody expensive but worth it, but this has the record scratching, even a skip, and the cover you photographed has the telltale circular perimeter wear mark LOL thanksAmillion!

Thanks! Have not heard the jam version since they played it on the radio when the album first came out. Much better than the original version and should have been the official release in my opinion.

The bass and keys work on the second is as groovy as it gets , especially the part where they play on B.

I can recall reading that Polydor released a 7" single of Tell The Truth in 1970,the shorter faster version that is,l read this in 1970 in the Disc' music paper.l then scoured the local record shops without success, only to learn that it was quickly withdrawn, but not before a number of copies sold. PS.Always felt the shorter, faster version was far better than the longer slow version.

Eric didn’t like Phil Spector’s production actually.
