    Butler's transcendent performance is an instant classic that ranks among the greatest in film history. Staggering how, like so much else in this film, it stays in my head, long after leaving the theater. Incredible work.

      Oh yeah, no one is ever going to be Elvis - and no one will ever sing those songs the way he could. But it would be special to have an album with Austin’s version after all the vocal training he did

      @@FinelyTaylored I admit I was a bit nervous when I saw the first interview where Baz said Austin would be doing some of the singing. I was blown away when I saw the "Hayride clip" and then the pre-production camera test singing "That's All Right". I played my mom Austin's version of "Hound Dog" from the movie and she thought it was Elvis.

    My mom was 16 when she met my dad who was 20. She was never "groomed". They met at work and dated, got married, had three kids(older sister who was stillborn), and then my twin sister and I. They were married for over almost 54 years until multi-organ failure claimed him in 2020. Dating at younger ages wasn't as big a deal back then as it is now.

      @Christine O`Neal
      Exactly!
      So much talk about "political" and sexual correctness.
      It`s wrong to fall in love with a 14-year-old girl when you`re 23.
      But it`s right to fall in love with an 18-year-old girl when you`re 40.
      Everyone knows that a girl at 14 can have children and is in most cases more mature than boys over 20.
      Many decades ago, in 1971, the Am. Congress decided that 18-year-old teenagers are adults. Before that, the milestone was 21.
      I know 16-year-olds who are wiser than many so-called adults.
      I also know 50-year-old people who haven`t a clue what life is about.
      In some countries of the world, a girl turns into a woman when she gets her first period.
      Who can decide for everyone else when they are old enough to do certain things?
      Vote, go to war, have sex, etc.
      In most cases, we are dealing with incorrect technicalities and the average Joe six-pack clings to such formalities like burdock to clothes.

      My grandparents wed in 1942 at ages 15 (gma) & 17 (gpa) for no other reason than they were in love. Their courtship began when she was 13 and accompanied her cousins to go bowling and my grandfather claimed he knew she was The One at first sight. He was 15. They had a respectful courtship with their families' approval, always accompanied by friends and family on outings. It was a different time. I choose not to cast judgment on a relationship from 60-70 years ago by today's societal standards. Would I approve of the above situation today? Absolutely not. But it was different in 1940s, life expectancy was lower, the time was different. My grandparents were devotedly married 63 years until my grandfather's passing and then reunited with my grandmother's 2 years later.

    You have to go into this movie for what it is.
    @Finely Taylored You HAVE to watch that Austin Butler on Jimmy Fallon Show interview.

    Great discussion.
    Elvis's music was not a copy of blues/black music of the time, it integrated pop, country, gospel, and blues, it was unique for the time, just go listen to the music of the day and Elvis's versions. Also, he grew up in a black neighborhood, it was part of his culture, as well as absorbing all county, ballads, bluegrass, and pop he heard on the radio.
    His biggest million-seller hit was 'Hound dog' written by two Jewish white boys, NOT Big Mamma Thornton, Elvis changed some lyrics and injected a frenetic rhythm, his version was nothing like hers or anyone else's.
    Of the black musician's music he recorded AND songs written by them FOR Elvis, they were all grateful, got well paid, and recognized.
    BB King defended Elvis many times on film as well as activists Muhammad Ali, and James Brown who were good friends. And most of the black community back in the 50s respected Elvis, that's real.
    The hate set in when a vicious lie was widely circulated by a reporter about something racist Elvis was supposed to have said (I won't repeat it) but it has been totally disproven many times.
    Makes you wonder if it was circulated deliberately! But the mud stuck.
    I was not expecting Austin to be sooo good in this movie, but he just embodied Elvis. I think he is still carrying a little bit of Elvis with him now.
    It helped that Austin has great charm and charisma almost like Elvis. But we know he also worked incredibly hard for 2 years doing nothing but being Elvis.
    Being taught many different dance styles and moves, he had lots of vocal coaching and also watched and listened to all of Elvis's movies and songs, and read intensely many books all about him, just about anything he could find.
    So that's why he was so good, very hard work, and he immersed himself in everything Elvis. NOTHING GOOD COMES EASY!
    Huge respect to Austin, he came close to the real thing! and that's something else.
    EPIC, AWSOME, and STUNNING movie and a fantastic EXPERIENCE. Off to see it again tonight. and Baz Luhrmann is officially a genius now. Oscars all around.👏👏 😎😎

    I'm 53 and have been a rabid Elvis fan since I was 2. I was 8 when he died and was crushed. I share your reaction to the film and Austin's performance, both were other-worldly. More akin to a virtual experience than a film. I want to comment on one specific moment from your video that caused me to have a mini-freak out lol. It was your friend's mention of her friend's reaction to Elvis' laugh. During my first viewing of the film there were many instances where Austin's performance blew my head off. Moments where he was, quite literally, channeling Elvis. But none more than the moment with Binder at the Hollywood sign - when Binder told Elvis that he thought his career was in the toilet. Austin's reaction to Binder was the most Elvis thing I have ever seen from someone who was not Elvis. Not just the manner and sound of the laugh, but also its reason. It was a laugh of relief, of gratitude. At that point in his life Elvis was so tired of being lied to and pandered to that it actually gave him joy to hear unflattering honesty. I turned to my girlfriend at that moment and said "that's him...that's literally him". A small moment in the film, but to an Elvis fan, it felt like the earth moved under my chair. So glad I was not the only one who noticed that. Thank you for your Elvis reaction vids, love them.

      @FinelyTaylored  2 роки тому +2

      Thank you so much for sharing that story with me! That scene at the Hollywood sign really touched me as well - but not because I was familiar with how Elvis sounded when he laughed or anything like that. It was just Austin feeling like he was completely channeling him in that moment. It just felt so real. It’s hard to put into words really. Absolutely one of my favorite moments.

    • @TonyTCB
      @TonyTCB 2 роки тому +2

      @@FinelyTaylored I agree, It is hard to put into words. The channeling moments we are talking about seem to transcend language. That may sound absurd to some people but I know you understand. When people ask me what I thought of the movie I say, "You just have to see it. It's very visceral". Austin's performance cannot be overstated. I've been thinking about it a lot, wondering how he did what he did. Oftentimes, when actors play a famous person, I think there is a tendency to shut out your own identity and completely adopt the identity of the character. That's an impossible task, especially with someone like Elvis. The performance becomes an imitation, a caricature. Austin didn't do that. He kept his identity, held on to things like fear and doubt, and expressed them through the prism of Elvis. It worked so well because Austin is a humble and charming guy in his own right, and from what I can tell, an all around good dude. It was a perfect blend. I've never seen anything like it. And yes, some witchcraft may have been involved as well. 🙂

    Elvis stole nothing from black artists. Once something is out there, it`s there for every other artist to use, twist, and change. Picasso started cubism and others used it and turned it into their style. Never ever had anybody complained that those other artists stole from Picasso.
    Elvis combined R & B, Rock & Roll, Country, and even elements of Gospel, he was the first to add drums to that kind of music, and on top of that, he added his style, charisma, and sex appeal. Everybody else had the same opportunity to do the same but they weren`t able to do it. The whole "theft drama" is nothing but childish envy and total nonsense.

    As far as elvis "stealing" music from the black culture, people forget elvis grew up in a very poor ghetto as fuck neighborhood, so he was definitely inspired by black culture, but he always gave proper credit, he never claimed to have invented the genre, many musicians do their style.very similar to their musical idols, and they don't get accused of stealing their music, if you wanna argue he was more successful because he was white, that's fair, but he didn't intentionally steal their music, he was inspired by it, and made it his own style.

    Have totally enjoyed your discussion. I just loved the movie and I’m a big Elvis fan. Have seen it twice and I’m sure I’ll see it again!! Your question about Austin’s hottest scene (you two are funny) is too hard a question but I’ll go with The “Trouble” concert. I literally said “Oh G-d!” Out loud. Regarding Tom Hanks as Colonel Parker I think he played that very deliberately. We knew he was awful all along but the scene where EP collapsed and all he was worried about was that he make it on stage later for his performance. Let’s also remember that he came to El’s funeral in an Hawaiian leisure shirt (this wasn’t in the movie but really happened). His reaction to learning that EP died was to call RCA to tell them to print more records. Hanks played him perfectly by making his offensiveness so off putting to any normal human being. Really, every frame in the movie is perfect. I know some people have commented that the first half is like a coffee high. I thought that was done deliberately to give the sense of how fast his rising fame must have seemed to Elvis. Finally, regarding the cultural appropriation comments, this was a kid that grew up in the shake Rag section of Tupelo…predominantly black area with three other white families. He played with Black children, went to the waterhole with them, spent time in each other’s homes and went to Black church and revival meetings. He didn’t go to elementary school with them because of the segregation laws. He was steeped in the culture and music, respected and loved the music. I don’t know that that is misappropriation or influence.

    Good analysis. However he wanted to do movies where he was a serious character like James Dean or Marlon Brando. He didn’t like the cheesy “format” movies of the 60’s that the Colonel got for him. His more serious movies are King Creole and some of the earlier movies. That was one of his huge frustrations and disappointments - that he didn’t get to be a serious actor which is what he wanted. Watch some documentaries (Searcher) or interviews with people who knew him, and this is revealed.

    I wish they wouldn't have done that last concert scene of unchained melody as the last scene. I wish it was actual footage of elvis of his real documentary thats the way it is leaving fans happy out of the theater not sad or more of austins concerts of thats the way it is showing more of austins hard work. such as letting austin be doing a concert with real elvis music while the credits roll in front of him. Austin deserved to have more of his hard work shown on the big screen.

    Gen z who weren't born or lived at that time or know who Elvis is are concerned that Elvis didn't live by their ideology of segregating music? They sound pretty racist to me tbh. These people are no different than those who tried to cancel Elvis in the 50s because he sang and was influenced by black culture growing up in a black neighborhood and the projects.

    As a massive Elvis fan I did not like the film that much, it was more of a Colonel film instead of Elvis. It was chaotic and we didn’t really see the real Elvis, the charming one making jokes every second of the day. Even the Smith family who knew Elvis the best (the side of Elvis’s mother) didn’t like it, the film made them feel very sad, Elvis looked hopeless all the time and the character didn’t match the real Elvis.

      I’m sorry to hear your didn’t enjoy the film! I definitely feel like yourself and the Smith family went into the film with a totally different perspective and expectation than I did - which is fair. I went into it wanting a fantastical, Baz Luhrmann style film. That’s absolutely what I think we got. I was also fascinated to see a performance by an actor who didn’t feel like he was doing a bad impression or impersonation - which is all I really know, since Elvis died 16 years before I was born. I’m not very familiar with Elvis outside of his more popular songs. I don’t know much about his life or what he was like, outside of what we saw in the film. I think Baz spent a lot of time doing a lot of research but I also don’t think he was trying to make a documentary. He was trying to tell a story with a specific emotional arc, from a very specific perspective- through the eyes of the Colonel. It was more a movie about their relationship: how the show and the business do and don’t go together. I do think the film shows that Elvis was a charming man, but I don’t think showing him making jokes every second of every day would have served the specific story that Baz wanted to tell. And I totally get why maybe people who knew him very well or have been big fans of him for a long time and know so much about him may not love the movie. But I think it’s done a great job getting the younger generations talking about Elvis and possibly even discovering and falling in love with his music for the first time which is a beautiful thing! Thank you for your comment and your perspective ❤️

      @@FinelyTaylored I do wanna say something about Austin, he was AMAZING! he did the role of Elvis with so much respect, the movements, the look in his eyes etc, it really reminded me of Elvis. I saw the film yesterday again in the cinema and wanted to see it from another perspective. My theory, I think the film is so chaotic because Colonel Tom Parker worked for the fair, it felt like a rollercoaster ride, he tried to promote Elvis once again but through this movie (I hope you understand it lol). After the second time I accepted that the film was a ride and I enjoyed it more. Is it oscar worthy? I dunno, is this the best Elvis film? Definitely! Ps I noticed that they used deep fake in the little less conversation scene, that's why he looked alote like Elvis.
      Thank you for the response btw ❤

    Lace shirts were not popular back then so it won't be a come back. Guys would have been accused of being gay had they worn a lace shirt in the 50s or 60s.

      @@naomiwarner7117 From what I have read he always wanted to be different, but I think it was the Black influence in his life. I grew up in Houston and I guarantee anyone who would have dressed that different someone would have called them gay or as the guy at the Hayride called him fairy. I watched a short bio and guys would cut the strings on his guitar. I have been reading stuff from a newspaper site called "Portal to Texas History" and from what I have read guys really didn't like him at first, but when they realized girls liked him then they started acting more like him.

    Why would you want the austin version of elvis when you can listen to the real elvis?

    • @FinelyTaylored
      @FinelyTaylored  2 роки тому +2

      Because Austin put in over 2 years of vocal training and poured his heart and soul into this project. I’d love for him to have an album that represents that. He’s a really talented guy and even though he isn’t Elvis, I think that’s what makes it great. He’s not trying to do an impression. He’s doing an embodiment- and interpretation that brings a different, new life to it. I know I can always listen to the real Elvis, but wouldn’t it be such a gift to have both?
