      Happy to hear that, Rizwan. A student asked a good question in the comments about "had better" vs. "better." "Had" is sometimes dropped from "had better" in spoken English, but we don't drop it in writing. I'd only drop it if one of your characters were speaking, so the quoted speech could be relaxed and informal. ("You better come here now," he said in a serious tone.) Just wanted to note that.

    Hello Jennifer! Good to see you! It was such an informative lesson and interesting. I got some understanding of the scale for necessity and using modal verbs to express that. Excellent! Thanks a lot! I have never been abroad, but as for me, the UK is like a fairyland. They have a Monark and democracy simultaneously. I think Megxit is not bad coz they got a little freedom more for their lives. I haven't understood Vicki well coz I have been learning American English. Thank you again! Have a great weekend!

      I'm happy you liked the lesson, Sergei. Yes, the scale helps me when I think of modals of necessity. In the future, we'll have to study modals of certainty in a similar way. It's interesting how the UK has a monarchy and a democracy. Right? I'm glad I invited Vicki to contribute so that your ears were tested! Happy Valentine's Day!

      I know a lesson on modals was long overdue. I'll likely make another lesson on modals of certainty at some point. Those are the two main divisions in my mind. Yes, Americans like me have some curiosity when it comes to Queen Elizabeth II and her family. :) The TV series The Crown made our admiration grow only more.

    Hello mam , can we use two models verbs together ? As you can see in this sentence there are two modal verbs ( should + semi modal have to leave)
    Or is it possible with others models two ( would , could and may)
    Ex:
    If you should ever have to leave a movie before it is over, be quite as you exit the theater.

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  2 роки тому

      Yes, you can use "should have to" in that sentence.
      We can't put two modals together, however. (Example "must" + "should")

  • @stunninglad1
    @stunninglad1 4 роки тому

    This is a very interesting lesson. Just as interesting as the Megxit debate is the lesson on modals and semi-modals. I am now noticing English websites lumping them in together. Some come in collocation form (had better, could have) and there is one that has somehow passed me by: 'ought.;
    'Ought' has to be a modal verb because it is not an infinitive. Just with the well-known modals (can, may, will, shall, might. must, would, could, should) we can't put 'to' in front of it, nor can we add a prefix or suffix. I OUGHT to have spotted this when I gave my lesson on modals. However, it only works as a collocation: 'ought to.' Maybe this is why 'ought' doesn't make it to the 'official' list of modal verbs. We can see how it varies from the rest:
    I can.
    I may.
    I will.
    I shall.
    I might.
    I must.
    I would.
    I could.
    I should.
    I ought!!! - Oh dear! That doesn't work, but 'I ought to' does.

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  4 роки тому +1

      Indeed, not everyone agrees on a list of modals and (especially) semi-modals. In the end, maybe it matters less what we label things and more how we use them. As long as we agree on use and meaning, then all is well! "Ought to" can't be broken up, and it's recognized by most dictionaries as a modal. www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/ought-to "Need" is more complicated. I think using "need" as a true modal verb is more common in British English. Our use of the modal "need" is so limited in American English that I decided not to include it here. (Need I say more?) Maybe in an advanced grammar video I'll address "need" in more detail. "Used to" and "shall" are also interesting to discuss. So much to talk about, so little time!
      Thanks for the comment and for the wonderful contribution!

    • @stunninglad1
      @stunninglad1 4 роки тому

      @@Englishwithjennifer It's good to give modal verbs the spotlight - They are vital verbs in the English language. The 'to be' verb, the verb-subject agreement and the forms of 'be' also take their place in a list of areas learners must know.
      Need - A verb and a noun
      I need to learn modal verbs. (verb)
      We have a great need to learn this subject (noun)
      As a semi-modal verb, it is very strong in intensity, coming ahead of the others in the necessity stakes.

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  4 роки тому +1

      We can talk more about "need" in a future video. It's quite versatile. Thank you again for your contribution!

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, it's okay to use the present perfect progressive: Has it been raining?
      Most Americans would likely use the simple past: Did it rain earlier? / Oh, I guess it rained. / Hmm. It looks like it rained a little.
      Some might use the past progressive: Why is everything wet? - It was raining earlier.

    Great explanation ! but i cant understand the ing form in this example .
    I have to be going .
    How can we use it in progressive form as we use progressive form for the action which is in middle .
    Suppose if i have an urgent work and my friends insist me to go with them for party . So , i will say ; sorry guys I have to go but how can I can say I have to be going?

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  2 роки тому

      "have to" + base verb = necessity (like "must")
      We can use a progressive form (BE + present participle): I have to be leaving now. (I must leave now.)
      Also: I have to be going. / I have to get going.
      It's an action that is happening or about to happen. This wording is common in conversation when we need to announce our intention to leave.

    Hi Jennifer.
    Actually I don't know why people give this action ' megxit' more than it deserves.
    This is the last thing I would think about.
    Even though they are no longer part of the loyal family, they still have a big future because they are famous and every company around the world will be proud if they work for.
    For example if you put their photo on a biscuit showing that they like it, so many people will buy it.

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  4 роки тому +1

      Ha ha. So true. You can put their photo on a cookie or a mug, and it will sell. They have a brand now called Royal Sussex. Maybe they already have merchandise. I don't know. I follow the news a little, but I'm not going to buy merchandise. A good number of Americans like to see a glamorous life in photos and on the screen. If we like the people living that lifestyle, we don't begrudge them what they have. As a society, we were very fond of Princess Diana, and we watched her raise her two sons. Now that Diana is gone, we take interest in the lives of her children and generally wish them well. The wives, Kate and Meghan, have carried themselves with grace, so we have a positive opinion of them. They're also very pretty, and that makes them more attractive to the public. Films and documentaries have taught us to admire Queen Elizabeth II and her father, so that also feeds into the generally favorable opinion Americans have of the royal family.
      Correction: every company around the world would be proud to do business with them. (would be proud if they worked for them ->> This gets confusing with "them.)

      WHICH/THAT as relative pronouns can refer back to a thing. However, "that" can only be used in identifying (restrictive) clauses. More info in my playlist on adjective (relative) clauses.

      I offer many playlists, which took a while to organize.

    Can i say " i am studying english honours at oxford university."( if we want to mention course)??

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  4 роки тому +1

      Yes. If that's the name of the course. For example, if you're studying history there, you could say, "I'm taking a history course at Oxford."

    Hello mam, good morning ! Should is used for giving and taking advice but your friend vicki used should in question . sorry but I can't get why she used should here in this sentence as she is not giving advice neither taking from aynone . It appears to me as she is asking a question but i completely didn't understand the use of should here. Please help me !
    Ex: why should British taxpayers pay to support the royal family ?

      "Should" can be for advice, but it has other uses.
      1. She should be her by now. Where is she? >> certainty & expectations (I expected her to be here by now.)
      2. Why should I do that? >> obligation (Why am I obligated to do that?)

    I think the members of the royal family should be allowed to leave their official duties.
    I think that taxpayers do not have to continue to support the royal family.
