The Carpenters are basically a duo (Karen main vocal and drums; Richard brother, keyboard, song selection and arrangement). Karen had to be forced from behind the drums to be out front. I believe she always considered herself a drummer first even though she had one of best voices ever. She died young in a very tragic way (sad story). They were out of place music-wise for their time in history compared to what was considered the most popular. Initially their record company didn't really know what to do with them. They have a number of hit songs always lead by that unmistakable voice.
