Schipa was one of the "eternal masters" At times, he doesn't even sound like an "opera singer" per se, but just a perfectly natural singer who had incredible phrasing. God given abilities.
Very nice indeed! I'm glad to see Pavarotti pay that kind of hommage. Schipa was a wonderful tenor. His voice was no larger than that of a popular singer, and not even as big as some popular singers, but the fact that he could be an opera star tells us a lot about what people really like to hear, which is beauty and elgance, and not just blasting! I do so wish it were possible for singers like that to be heard now. The fault lies with conductors and managers, not the singers!
A bright voice a voice that sings in the Bell and the well will always carry over an orchestra or other singers with a darker sound production. As an example, Robert Shaw's choruses are bright as opposed to Roger Wagners which are dark. Tito Schipa s voice can very successfully sing opera even with a smaller voice because it is bright with power!! .
Really, the beauty of Schipa's singing, so much better displayed elsewhere, simply takes the breath away, When he sings he elevates the mind and the spirit transporting one to a higher plane of existence if only for a brief time. A truly masterful artist...
Pavarotti grew up with tremendous respect for his elders in Modena while singing with his father in the choir and you can see his admiration and respect for the past in this video. He was probably told a thousand times to listen to Gigli, Caruso, and Schipa which is how the tradition is transferred.
Oh yes this was a GREAT voice and a great artist. It's a shame that today this kind of voice is no longer appreciated. Today it's all about who can sing the highest notes and who can sing the loudest. If you listen to the singers of the past this was not the case. Few had the now venerated high "C" and in fact most compositions weren't even written with a high "C". Puccini even said he preferred the "Che Gelida Maninna" in the lower key. Today where's the finesse, the style, the feeling for the music and the words? Few artist can live up to this standard today. I could go on but.....
@ reduxmisc Bellini wrote an F (4 notes higher than the C) for Rubini in I puritani bc Rubini possessed even a G. But at that time, male singers used the falsettone which was less powerful than the chest voice used since the 2nd half of the 19th century. But that was the real bel canto, and in fact Schipa’s singing is comparable to Rubini’s.
I've only recently discovered Schipa, and I'm most impressed with how his singing is so natural and unaffected that it just pours out of him. A great singer in his own right. 🤍🤍🤍

My grandfather heard him in Verona and said his voice towered over all the other singers.

Beautiful phrasing, diction, interpretation, while caressing the music.

Ask people now who they think is the best, and they will mostly say Lanza or Caruso. Schipa, Gigli and Björling will be mentioned also.

Il fascino della inimitabile voce di Schipa
meraviglioso Schipa grazie !
Schipa's performance of Una Furtiva Lagrima is still the best.
Скіпа потрясний, чудовий! Його можна слухати і переслухувати, тисячі раз.
Una voce carezzevole usata con grande maestria, un piacevolissimo ascolto
( non si canta solo con gli acuti... )

This evidence indicates that only the great singers are able to admire those who have gone away but having left heratige of stlyle of singing.
Grazie!!!
Bello video
Nice.
Do you have any more footage of Schipa?
Schipa: one of the immortal greats.......Sadly there are no greats today, not even any good singers. Kaufmann , for example is quite quite awful
Agreed! But I have enjoyed Liparit Avetisyan.
