the problem with VGMs is that when I export this song the PCM is out of tune and I think VGM don't handle samples to well in some systems (from what I saw)
From what I understand/remember, PCM is a more detailed version of DPCM in that it can play samples at a much higher quality (7bit vs 1bit I believe?), but the downside is it stops the NES from being able to draw to the screen while playing the music. I think Battletoads used it during the pause music (when nothing was being drawn to the screen) and in little bits from drum hits during the intro cutscene so you couldn't notice the stuttering too bad because it only halted while the short snare sample was playing. There's very few examples of it being used on the original NES and I did a deep dive into them at one point, it's kinda interesting. If you ever hear a really high quality sample in an NES title and notice nothing moved while it happened, you've probably found a game using PCM.
With furnace you can use "any pitch" using the PCM mode (not DPCM) and the sample type instrument however the volume thing is another sample but quieter, so there is 4 samples in total: 2 sawtooth and 2 pulse waves
The CPU would struggle to play the PCM channel as it is basically bitbanging, requiring constant uninterrumpted playback. consider using DPCM next time for a more accurate NES feel
Thanks!! And the samples I used (2 pulses and 2 sawtooths) are REALLY tiny, like, less than a kilobyte in total so it wouldn't be a problem to fit them in a rom
You were blessed by YT algorithm
Love that use of the PCM channel for more chiptune :D
Using the PCM channel for echo when the other pulse channel is already doing stuff is genius.
Dunno why this popped up in my recommended videos but it's really awesome! Great work!
Ok how did you make the 2A03 sound THIS GOOD? =D This video should be sent to anyone who thinks it is a lame chip
This doesn't just slap. It hits, bops, smackers, and is absolute fire.
This is exactly my genre, passionate chiptune music. Thank you youtube recommendations!
If they ever add NSF export I'd love to try this on my flashcart
VGM2NSF exists and Furnace can already export VGMs for all systems which support it :D

@@nicco1690 does VGM stand for “Video Game Music”?
@@matthewroyer1561 yes, but it's also the name of a file format meant for storing old video game music in tiny sizes compared to say, mp3s or wavs
The algorithm has blessed this video, rejoice!
Absolute banger! Good job.
THIS MAN USIN DPCM FOR EVERYTHING ELSE
You bless us with this track, and the algorithm blesses you.
Oh it's a good day to be a chiptune fan and discover this video, this slaps
Amazing work! You've got a real talent for this, can't wait to hear what comes next
This is really cool, and sounds amazing! I don't quite understand the pcm-not-dpcm thing yet, are there any games that use this?
yep, battletoads uses PCM instead of DPCM most of the time

this is what my music would sound like if i knew how to make music that isn't just a 6 secound main melody
Reminds me of a keygen song mixed with Castlevania. Good stuff. Subbed
IS THAT A FUCKING PCM SAWTOOTH?!?!?
yep it is
a true Rob Hubbard moment
Man I WISH I was this good at making melodies! This sounds so good ong
Just Incredible melody! Thanks A Lot for It!
DPCM Wave. Impressive!
I’m another one who got this randomly via the “algorithm” but it’s ace!
Nice 2A03 tune, nice using the PCM channel as a wavetable!😄🤩😎👌
There ya are.
just imagine if keygens existed on the nes and this banger played
Holy cow this is amazing!!
this is so on fire
Holy mother this is so good
wait... what is heard in the PCM channel only with a sample you can use any note and volume?
With furnace you can use "any pitch" using the PCM mode (not DPCM) and the sample type instrument however the volume thing is another sample but quieter, so there is 4 samples in total: 2 sawtooth and 2 pulse waves
Woah, killer piece
wow
just wow
thats really cool
s
PCM LEAD ECHO???
Underrated song.
This slaps
Cool hehe
nice
Yeah but you gotta get Metal Man's weapon before taking on Wood Man's stage...
I was here
This is unique, yet nostalgic.
May I attempt a remix of this? Dunno what style as of yet, if you want me to reach out however, I can.
Tim Follin 2
any way to extract this as midi? lol

the CPU would struggle in a game however: ua-cam.com/video/985B5DSVrYw/v-deo.html
I hate to say this but...... EXTEND PWEASEEE
Thank you UA-cam
Pepper steak🙏
This is really good! Good luck attempting to put it in a nes rom, that pcm will use WAY too much storage
Thanks!! And the samples I used (2 pulses and 2 sawtooths) are REALLY tiny, like, less than a kilobyte in total so it wouldn't be a problem to fit them in a rom
what if it's more of a subroutine based sawtooth and pulse echo instead of being based on reading PCM data as is
@@Laagybtw NES PCM has a flag to loop the sample but ig you already know lol
first comment
wtf aree you doing with that pcm channel ,, fuckin i think this falls into some weird category of child abuse stop it
