I bought a chair in NC over the weekend and when I was taking it apart I was surprised to find horse hair as their foam and it had springs like used to be in bed mattresses and very old tiny tacks along with some type of paper rolled up very tight for the edges AND sack fabric to hold in the horse hair! I found out is was done in the 1800’s! You just never know what you might find doing these chairs! Looking at the frame of the chair I would have never guessed it was that old! The legs were “pegged” together and one leg the peg was broken, so I don’t know if I can fix it or not! We will see! Fun, Fun, Fun!!
It's possible if you are really careful with how you staple it in. They aren't made for that, so it needs to be done carefully so it doesn't break the frame.

What is best to use for cleaning old chairs before working on them Wendy ?
I generally use a wet rag, but I also know that many of my students use Dixie Bell White Lightning Cleaner
On chairs with openings at the back (say 5x10 oval) can this part have fabric added to it even if it originally does not have any fabric?
