Ok, couple of things to try, see if you have engine breaking in manual low(i believe the band comes on). Also as a test, maybe unplug the solenoid connector see what happens. Also, did this valvebody you bought come with gaskets? possible the gasket moved during rebuild.

Hey Gary great video. Bought a 99 explorer with the 5r55e trans. Reverse and drive doesnt work. Well barely moves at high revs and in 4 low. Put in 1 or 2 and it drives forward ok enough to move around. Thought it was valve body related replaced what I thought was a very obvious blown valve body gasket. Still has same problem so I decided im just going to rebuild it. It has been a long time since I've done one so I'm looking for a bit of advice. Looking for rebuild kits there's a lot of options. Is there one you'd recommend? Since I'm tearing it right down I figure I might as well do it right. Do you recommend replacing all the solenoids as well as the epc and tcc? I know this is an older vid, but my 98 4.0 ranger 4x4 5r55e I believe, just started blowing fluid out between the rear of trans and front of transfer case, put a gallon of fluid in and limped it home, put in park and pawl didn't seem to engage. Shifter rod is good and tight as I've had that problem before. Haven't pulled the x-fer case yet, but would this maybe be a seal i can replace with trans in vehicle, and could that leak affect the parking pawl? Thanks in advance.
Sir I've watched some of your videos and I need your help badly. I had back surgery in April and I have not been able to work and my funds are very low. My main vehicle is a 2003 Ford Ranger 3.0 with automatic transmission. I have lost reverse and cannot start out in drive but I have first and second. I was able to have the codes pulled and these are what the computer has stored.... PO733 PO734 PO735 I've done a little research and I know it's possible that it could be solenoid and I sure hope it is. It has 173,000 miles on it and I want to keep this truck as I've already had it for 12 years. I just need some good honest advice on what I possibly need to do. If it is the solenoids I can replace them as I replaced the short block in it 18 months ago 5000 mile Ford Taurus engine. I did all the work myself and have went 22000 miles with no problems. I know you are busy but if you can give me just a few tips or opinions I would definitely appreciate it. Thank you so much in advance! 600
my 1998 ford ranger 4.0 5r55e trans reverse stopped working, and i noticed that when its i 1 or 2 it feels like the brake is on when you give it gas, shift it into drive and it goes normal,i know it has to be rebuilt cuz of the reverse issue but wondering if i need a torque converter as well.nice vid,ive never worked on a transmission so any ideas would help, thanks
Quick question regarding this trans...I am about to drop it tomorrow to replace the reverse band. (99 ranger v6 4.0 4x4 5r55e) Everything worked fine before, so if I open it up and replace reverse band, do I really need to bother with changing anything else? Are there any special tools I need other than a snap ring tool? I'm pretty good at taking stuff apart and being able to rebuild it, but this has me a little nervous. Thank you for any input, much appreciated!
I would say no, not sure of the mileage but you will see what the other parts look like. What you may want to do as a precaution is install a new pump o-ring, check the o-rings for the side servos. You will need a torx 30 socket for the center support bolt that goes through the case.
@@GaryFerraro Sorry, mileage is 215k, but I bought it knowing the reverse band was probably broken, which I confirmed by removing the reverse servo and saw the tab broken off. Don't know the vehicle history, but so far everything removed is Ford genuine and looks to be all original (after cleaning dirt and grease off). I will order the pump part you suggested. I will try to set everything out in exact order and orientation I remove it, but just incase something gets kicked around, do all the parts go back in one way only, or do they mostly spin around in place?

My 1998 explorer XLT has an Overdrive lught flash, after running couple of miles. I tried to diagnose it but no trouble codes. What would be the problem? Thx
I've done it again and it shows 2 codes: 1) P1000 - System Readiness Test Not Complete. 2) P1729 - 4x4 Low Switch Error. Are those can trigger the OD light to come flash? And another thing is, when it starts flashing, it's hard to shift to OD, sometimes it doesn't. Even if it does, i need to rev higher.
O/D issues, what could cause the O/D sensor light to come on/off during normal driving conditions on the highway. Do this mean the transmission needs some type of adjustment?
And now for the real reply....the thing he is pounding on for some fuckin reason at 05:33 is the O/D servo, which comes out very easily with a pair of snap ring pliers......from the outside. It is likely that the hole it goes into has been worn and needs to be sleeved. There is also a much easier fix for it, but it requires you to buy a new kit that has been recently developed. On the bright side, it does NOT require the tranny to be removed. Works wonders and for $200, it's well worth it. I am rebuilding a 5r55e. After replacing the forward clutch disc and steels, it won't apply with air testing by using the center support to test.
Is the transmission together?
@@GaryFerraro it was. I rebuilt it, installed, test drove and I had no 2nd gear and the RPMs rose when shifting to 3rd. I readjusted both bands with no avail. I removed and found nothing except there OD band had a small black mark. It is tie apart now at work. I followed the ATSG book.
@@stephensiniard5532 Ok, so problem no 2nd? did you have 5th? Front band should be 2nd and 5th
@@GaryFerraro I did. Now I'm putting it back together and making sure all clutch pack clearances are good. The ATSG book says to use the center support to air test forward clutch pack but the forward clutch won't engage when I apply 20psi to the left hole on center support. In other words, the piston is not applying. All springs are good.
I got it to work. I had to put the air pressure same as the line pressure would be. The book is wrong
2nd to 3rd is band to band shift, maybe try adjusting the that rides around the direct drum (not the front band, that is 2nd and 5th, the one behind that band is 3rd
There is a gasket inbetween trans and T-case, Will not affect park, check linkage cable may have fallen off
@@GaryFerraro got it. Thanks!

I've done a little research and I know it's possible that it could be solenoid and I sure hope it is.
Will that transmission work in a 2001 explore sport trac?
Explorer Sport Trac has the 5R55E transmission, like my explorer Sport.

Hey, Gary ...
I'm from Europe, the Czech Republic, sorry for my translation. I drive a 1998 Explorer, too great car ... but I'm going to fix the gearbox, I ask for advice? How do I set the gear shifting? Mate repaired transmission and shift mechanism was bad, maybe the speed of 10 miles had him ranked 3.převodový degree or even a fourth, and he was rocking ... Gary thank you very much for your answer, Marek
Hello,
Do you mean how do you set shift timing? is it shifting to early or to late?
Greetings from New York
Yes, moving prematurely ... he could go to second gear, but there needs to be given the 3rd or 4th gear ... Gary, thank you so much !!!! I did not expect my answer, and yet so soon ... :) and I have one gearbox, which does not reverse, can not drive, gets going with only one gear ... that I would like to also correct, then I would recommend wrote again to the potential problem, if you would not mind my question ... thanks Gary and health in New York, Marek Soukup
Ok, so you have first and second gear and no 3rd or 4th? Have you done anything yet to the transmission?
Yes, only the position of the gear lever to 1 gear wagon rides ... to position the car begins to move, R, D position, the car begins to move, position 2, the car starts badly but lies ...
I did not do anything, I want to start to repair ..
Awesome video! Quick question. If I was to convert my 5R55E from 2wd to 4wd what all would I need to replace?
That would be kinda ruff, you need a front differential, front drive shaft, transfer case. you have 2wd now?
Actually I got a 2wd 5R55E transmission. My ford ranger has a 5R55E 4wd transmission but it's bad. What all would I need to convert my 2wd transmission to a 4wd transmission
Are you saying you have 4wd and want 2wd? in your last post
Did you deliberately take that backwards? He wants to convert his good 2wd trans to a 4wd to replace his bad 4wd trans.
@@Gobijoe on a manual transmission you have to literally take it all apart to replace the shorter output shaft with a longer one which is needed so it reaches all the way into you 4x4 transfer case. Hi Gary a question.....
How can I distinguish the model of the gearbox of my Explorer 97, 4.0 automatic. Because I need the complete replacement kit for that gearbox. I do not know if it's a 4R55E or 5R55E

Do you have this transmission out of the car and apart yet?
Hey Gary, thanks for your answer... No, I haven't pick up, first of all I need to know which one is the model of my automatic gear box to request all the spare parts so then I will pick up, repare, install and then run the truck ... that was my question.
For this 97 explorer, generally are just one model? (4R55E or 5R55E), and my last question, how you find this model without disarming?
Waiting for you response.

Both transmissions could be that year, let me try this, if you could post your vin number or e-mail it to me gsferraro@yahoo.com i can run it through a program and see if it comes up with transmissiom type, may work or may not work. Gary
I have a 5r55e transmission in a 2001 ford explorer sport trac. When I took it out I noticed the top 2 bolts and the middle bolts on the bail housing was finger tight. I also recall there being a code for a sensor. The truck also wouldn't go into any gears. Any ideas?
bolts should be tight, you took it apart and see nothing? did you check the pump?
I hate to be one of these people. But. I have a 5R55e. From the front of the transmission counting back. The second and third clutch pack I cannot get to separate. They seems to be stuck together. Any help? I have them on a bench. And I put a small amount of pressure on them in a press with no prevail. You can turn the two independently. But very very little. Is there a snap ring that I cannot see that I am missing?
That is the forward and direct clutch pack, try using 2 screw drivers to get a little space and try to get the snap ring out

After overhauling this unit I'm having a problem with reverse still.. I replaced OD drum, forward scrag, all clutches and bands, including reverse. soft seals, both new servos and new updated valve body with modifications. also replaced front pump and converter. I have soft reverse engagement and will only move in reverse on the rack. All forward gears work perfectly, no codes, or any other problems. using Mac Mentor I'm able to look a data stream. shift solenoids all change no faults on any of the solenoids. line pressure all seems good except reverse which looks a little on the high side. it will increase to 200 at idle cold and runs about 150 when it warms up. Gary I'm not sure what to do, I pretty much replaced everything so I would not have a problem, not really wanting to take this back out until I have an idea of what it could be. I really would appreciate your thoughts and advise on this..............my only ideas are cracked direct drum, center support sealing problem ? possible valve body reverse modulator valve issue ? please help, my son is starting to doubt my abilities and I've been a tech for over 35 years. I'm really at my wits end on this one, any ideas would be greatly appreciated !!!!!!
ok in reverse, you have the direct drum(4th) and the reverse band. Did you tighten the center support bolt, are you sure 4th gear is good? Reverse is the original problem? what did you find?
My 1998 explorer XLT has an Overdrive lught flash, after running couple of miles. I tried to diagnose it but no trouble codes. What would be the problem? Thx
If the light is flashing there has to be a code, try a different scan tool
Ok. I'll try. Thank you, anyway.
@@rickyhenriques1007 If you get it scanned, let me know what code you have
I've done it again and it shows 2 codes:
1) P1000 - System Readiness Test Not Complete.
That usually means that there is a code present, the computer sees a problem. Have it scanned and let me know what the code is.
Here's the link, but you have to replace the (dot) with a period. fordservoboretransmissionfixsolution(dot)com
On the 5R55E the servo has a very light spring, most of the time i have to push it out from the inside.

What would that problem be by any chance? Just subscribed very great information thanks again
does it do this all the time?
Yes semi often unless I baby it
It actually is more prominent than not. But if I let off the gas it usually goes into next gear better.i know it's hard to tell without breaking it down. But what do you think? And how much average it would cost to rebuild it. Thx again! Keep it rockin 🎸
