    I have just purchased a CH-R and the way you are driving this is best saved for a sports car and one can see that from the way you accelerated from the cars behind you. I have consistently got 55ish with mixed driving to include motorway at 75mph. The point is that if you drive any other petrol automatic in mixed driving you will be lucky to get 35mpg. The car is very comfortable with good handling and handles pot holes and speed bumps very well. The auto is not great with regard noise which is out of sink and occurs before acceleration, but I think you have missed the point as to why most people buy this car

    I've watched some of your videos and my conclusions is always the same: you gusy don't don't how to drive economically and thus don't know how to drive an hybrid. If you expect it to be in EV like your Tesla, then you're off to a bad start. HYbrids must be driven gently, both accelerating and braking, for maximizing their potential. You complain about all regular hybrids when in reality it is you who doesn't understand how they work and what they're supposed to do. They're not even plug-in hybrids, let lone EVs. You go into these reviews with an EV mindset and that's why every regular hybrid is shitty for you. Learn how to drive gently and you'll see you can make a lot more out of them.
    The problem is in the "we drive like real people". Well, guess what, most real people have to relearn how to drive economically when switching to a hybrid, otherwise they'll get no benefit from the eletric part. You guys still haven't learnt, so don't complain when part of it is your fault. Go back to reviewing EVs, you can smash the trottle as agressively as you want in those without messing up MPG.

    An old video I know but they're driving this like the young friendly salesman at my local Toyota dealer did....wrong. It takes a while (a lot longer than a couple of hours) to get to grips with how to use the hybrid system effectively. I can do a 40 miles trip and get over 74mpg. I get over 500 miles to a tank that only holds 43ltrs.

    You turned off the Lane Assist because the car was trying to tell you that you were crossing the lanes??
    An easy fix is, instead of turning off a safety feature you should just try to stay in your lane.
    It's not rocket science.
    Otherwise it was a good review.

    Thanks for the informative video :)
    I have been driving a hybrid Auris (2013 spec) for three and a half years now, and I must say that it takes some time to get used to driving a hybrid for getting the low fuel consumption it promises. In the video, you seem to push the pedal quite hard, maybe to compare acceleration with an ordinary petrol car. I think that a hybrid should not be driven like that. I completely agree that the engine makes more noise than you get speed for it in return, but still, a hybrid is not meant to be driven like a normal petrol car. You accelerate gently (not like your grandmother maybe would, though), you coast where possible and you brake very early to take maximum advantage of the regenarative braking.
    For example, when I approach a junction with a red light, and traffic is light, I start coasting about 250-300 metres before. Then I try to start braking early, so the needle of the power meter gets as close to maximum regeneration, but try to not brake harder than that. Then, the fuel consumption is 0 (zero) for 300 metres.
    It will never be a fast car, let alone a sporty one. Just a great and reliable cruiser, fully loaded with kit. I wish it would have a bigger electric motor, or even be a PHEV.
    I actually am considering the C-HR as my next car, as I think that it a terrific deal if you love great reliability, weird styling and the same driving characteristics as any Toyota hybrid.
    For your information, with my driving style trying to get a good fuel consumption, I am getting 4-4.5 L/100 km in summer, and 5-5.5 L/100 km in winter. That's 58-52 and 47-42 mpg, respectively.

    • @Dave64track
      @Dave64track 6 років тому +3

      darkknight8139 I have just bought the hybrid and it's nothing like this review I'm getting at least 64 MPG with normal driving I can drive on the motorway at 70 mph in ev mode as long as its flat or if a slight decline you can coast at 70 and regen at the same time.
      They said that when you hit 10 mph the engine starts I've not found that happens with hybrids you drive then slightly different and haven't got to be heavy on the peddle. As for the breaks as long as your driving above 5 mph it uses regen when you hit the brakes and only uses the brakes to actually stop unless you hid the brakes hard. Hope this helps you decide.

      Yes, there is a special approach to driving a hybrid: no useless acceleration, no useless braking other than the right amount which provides the best possible regeneration when slowing down becomes inevitable.

    Hi Kate and James - thanks for the videos, I enjoy your reviews. I have a 30kw Leaf and after hearing your various comments about the effectiveness of the re-gen in different cars - is re-gen hardware or software controlled ? I was wondering whether the re-gen on the Leaf could be increased ? Dave N

    • @m1aws
      @m1aws 7 років тому

      Regen is less efficient than putting it into neutral and letting it coast to a stop.

    • @Jamesandkate
      @Jamesandkate  7 років тому +1

      Hi Dave,
      Regen is both hardware and software controlled. First of all you need a motor to generate a desired amount of regen, which the Leaf does have, and inverter to cope with this as it generates heat and a battery capable of taking the energy flow. but also it's programmed by software to not exceed a certain amount to protect these various components. Unfortunately the Leaf only has two options as far as I know, D and B and it would need a change to the software to alter this. The new Leaf has far more aggressive regen though. As m1aws pointed out, coasting to a stop is more efficient, but it seldom works where this happens. the minute you apply friction braking you are at a loss. Regen can recuperate up to 20% of the kinetic energy used in the acceleration phase. Hope this helps :-)

    Another great honest review. You nailed it regarding the power train. It's also in the Auris, Lexus CT 200h, and Prius. 1.8 Atkinson cycle engine with low torque, combined with CVT and partial EV assistance not good. The stereo would be on to cover the noise.In the Toyota Owners Forum UK, the hybrid performance has been described as too weak. The 1.2 turbo is the better engine to have. There's mention of adding a plug-in version. I would buy the far cheaper hybrid Hyundai Ioniq over the CHR. That's coming from a Toyota owner! An EV Ioniq is about same price.Keep up the good work 👍

But think of it this way; a rolling 6/7 year design, plan and build cycle for manufacturers with technology moving so fast means we need a Silicon Valley mind set to move things on in this archaic industry.
    Not that anyone from the Valley would be daft enough to enter this industry... or the space industry.

      I don't think Toyota have been sitting on their hands though publically they have been "Hydrogen, hydrogen, hydrogen". Though perhaps someone should have mentioned that Methane has an even higher energy density prior to Mr Musk stating that in a press conference some time ago...
      If you turn things around, look at the secrecy surrounding Apple product launches, I'm guessing the Motor Industry will start to adopt that mentality from now.

    Just a slight correction the JBL upgrade is not included with the Excel it is part of an upgrade with the leather seats. Your driving experience seems to have been different to mine. The throttle response you were getting makes me wonder if you were in Economy mode. There are three driving modes Economy. Normal and Sport which oddly there isn't a button for - you have to go through the onscreen settings. I totally get your comments coming from an EV. . Interesting what you say about sales because I live literally round the corner from the main Toyota Dealer in Warrington and can confirm they seem to be selling very well. Transporters loaded with these seem to be turning up every other day. My theory is people do like the high driving position of a crossover hence the success of the Qashqai and this enables a potential Prius driver to get that. They have filled a bit of gap. Agree on CVT gear boxes - drove a Jazz with one and it seemed slow and noisy - manual much better.

    A friend test drove one - hated the hybrid system, loved the looks. It will sell on looks alone though. I think the 1.2 petrol may be a better car and possibly not use any more fuel. He test drove a Zoe out of interest and loved it (and the instant throttle response) but.....he wanted a bigger car and bought a year old Passat diesel (aaaaarghh!). I'm not sure the new generation of engines improve fuel consumption other than in the lab. My ten year old petrol Megane CC gives me 40+ mpg (in line with official figures) but anecdotally people get nothing like the official figures out of newer cars. Oh and the Zoe arrives on the first (next Wednesday).

      I saw the car on Monday when I went in to finalise details. I met a couple who look like purchasing one too. I've bought the battery and they are thinking about also doing this though the dealers really push the battery rental. I get the impression it is selling well. The interior looks a lot better in black than the lighter colours on the 22 kw model I test drove. I'm starting to get excited but I also have to sell my current car and it will be nice when that is resolved (friends were going to buy it but not looking so certain now). I'm used to coasting a lot in gear for economy so I guess the lack of strong regen on the Zoe won't bother me too much.

  • @buzzardbrother1911
    @buzzardbrother1911 7 років тому +1

    Do you think with the immergence of more EV's it would be helpful to introduce a scale that more accurately highlights the range of a vehicle no matter what power it uses. As well as MPG or KWM it should indicate range when topped up, would this be detrimental to people who may want to transfer to EV's?

    • @Jamesandkate
      @Jamesandkate  7 років тому +1

      I think that would be a great idea. The problem is we don;t have an actual range on any car as so many things dictate the end result, the way it's driven, the weather, the engine age/quality. But we do have a storage capacity that although alters very slightly is predominantly the same. Also with an ICE car you have mass amounts of redundancy in mileage but with a BEV you don't. When the range is in the 500/600 mile area people won't be as interested in it. Also, honesty is the only way. I think all these fabricated mpg figures are a disgrace. Transparency is the only way forward I believe.

    • @buzzardbrother1911
      @buzzardbrother1911 7 років тому

      It just seems to me that although it's kind of like comparing apples with pears people look at the range of a vehicle rather than other variables. If you had a 2 Litre petrol a full tank would cost you about £60 and give you a range of probably no more than 300 miles, whereas your Tesla could get 200 miles on a full charge at a cost of say £12 so about £18 to do 300 miles (if you didn't have ecotricity or Tesla Superchargers). I suppose that's the point I was trying to make, if there was more emphasis on cost per mile rather than range people may be more inclined to make the switch.

    • @Jamesandkate
      @Jamesandkate  7 років тому +1

      Yeah definitely. With regards to our Model S it will cover 200 miles for about £8.50p which is about 4p a mile, that is a definite selling loin t just there.

    The CH-R is built on the brand new TNGA platform (the same as the 4th Gen Prius) and not the same platform as the Prius+. Have you driven the 4th Gen Prius?. I have always wanted a Prius but it has never come up to scratch with regard to ride and build quality, but the 4th Gen is in a different league to all previous Prius before it and and that is why I am swapping my Zoe for a new Prius Excel next week and I can't wait. At the end of the day its a Hybrid and not an electric car, the electric side is for assistance and for gliding around in city traffic. I have read that the CH-R is much more eager to run its ICE and spend less time in electric mode than the Prius and that is evident from your review also.

    • @Jamesandkate
      @Jamesandkate  7 років тому

      Mr H hi Mr H, I'm curious of this as I know the initial testing in 2015 was on the older platform but the handling was bad so they changed to the Prius plus platform??? That came from Toyota 😳 I'll make some enquiries in to this. I'm surprised to hear your going back to a hybrid after a Zoe, what's the issue? Handling? The CH-R really was an ice car, and as you said isn't an EV. That said, in the interests of fuel economy/emissions which is exactly what these cars are made for it needs to pull more out of the bag than 10 miles an hour whilst you hardly accelerate, based on the fact most energy is wasted in during initial acceleration and mass drag. After all the years Toyota have been making hybrids it's quite honestly no different in performance than a mk1 Prius sadly. Maybe the handling is better but 46mpg.... no thanks

    • @Jamesandkate
      @Jamesandkate  7 років тому

      Fair enough, some good reasons there. We really enjoyed the new Zoe but as you said, the range just wasn't consistent with the advertising. Our Tesla manages 200 miles regardless of if we drive it on the motorway or tickle it around and regardless of temperature which is perfect for us and the Supercharging is excellent. No RFID car/apps or ridiculous business models of charging people for time instead of what they actually receive... Although we are ecotricity customers this annoyed us. It's a backward step and has had exactly the opposite effect that they originally strived for.... you being a perfect example. You've got to remember it's only a hybrid, and the philosophy is that the electric motive power allows the engine to run at its most economical which is high revs when you need the power. We have a Yaris which has a smaller battery, and when you are in town if you are very light on the throttle you can run at up to 30 on the battery but with very slow acceleration. Your fuel consumption figures sound right, our Yaris averages 50 but the NEDC figures say 75. It's the NEDC test that needs to be scrapped. The US EPA figures are nearer true life. The power meter is similar to the Yaris and as such in town traffic if, once you get moving you keep it in the bottom half of the ECO section it will stay on electric. Go above this into the second part of the ECO section and the engine will cut in but not rev hard. the revs only come on if you go into the power section of the power meter. The Yaris has a 1.2 Atkins cycle engine coupled to the eCVT transmission. A bit long but it's what I've found.

      @Jamesandkate  7 років тому +2

      Gerd Bremer thats the point, people don't want a car that you have to adopt an unrealistic driving style to achieve the results. They want cars that perform like cars. These figures are achievable in many small petrol cars which drive much better than this hybrid system which, makes the hybrid system better because????

    • @Jamesandkate
      @Jamesandkate  7 років тому

      Gerd Bremer nope, not a Tesla. We compared this to a Nissan Leaf for acceleration. It felt painfully slow. A Nissan Juke 1.5dci is as quick and has better figures. This as you point out is a 2ltr petrol with the assistance of an electric motor.

    I just bought a C-HR. It’s reliable and fuel efficient. At least if you know how to drive a hybrid. Funny thing is that in the Netherlands hybrids are cheaper to drive (cost petrol vs electricity) now prices of electricity tripled. Went for a testdrive in Renault Zoë. About same price of C-HR. No thank you… Less car, less comfortable, half the range, very basic, etc. And it’s a Renault of course… I will be driving an EV in the future for sure. I will wait for a full EV from Toyota.

      James and Kate It's said the solar roof panel will charge enough everyday to drive 6.4km. And will fully charge the 8kw lithium pack in about 6days. It also improves the overall effeciecy too (probably less then 10% but it all adds up).. It's a nice little addition especially if your stuck without fuel or an outlet lol.

  • @fatroberto3012
    @fatroberto3012 6 років тому +1

    "Why a 1.8 not a 1.2 turbo?"
    Simple answer. It is a 1.8 litre (pseudo) Atkinson Cycle engine, so the amount of fuel air mixture it compresses per cycle is a lot smaller than a conventional 1.8 litre engine does. Of course you won't get the claimed economy thrashing it the way you are in this video and you will have to thrash it to get anywhere near the performance of the 1.2 turbo version. If you aren't prepared to accept that it is meant to be a slow car, and drive it the way Toyota intended, then you would be throwing your money away buying it in the first place.

    Maybe a little danger in 2017 of some manufacturers just looking to shove out a number of different EV-tech vehicles, anything, just to make the numbers up. I fear personally, there maybe a little bit of window-dressing and milking going on! Window-dressing, in making enough hybrids and EVs to qualify for some tax breaks they get eg in the USA for flogging a proportion of their total sales, as EV-based. Then, milking, in that if you put in a battery and can prove it even moves the car forward (ok, ten miles or something minimal) it gets the owner £2,500 back on purchase price in the UK, then cuts their road tax bill too. Although as you point out, there is an entirely new and less EV-generous scheme coming in for Road Fund Licence in the UK as of April 2017. Good review - what else can you say, they slapped in decade-old tech and a battery the Renault Twizy would turn its nose up at, in order to have an EV-tech rival to the Juke. Lastly - seems like those chunky looks are a big part of the appeal, and I don't think when the salesman says he's not able to get a hold of enough of these, he means the hybrid!

      That's the point, why would a car owner need to learn how to drive a car. This is where this system falls down. Inflated purchase price, o better mog than an economical petrol and definitely no better than a diesel and a driving style of Miss Daisy. Add to this, it's advertised as a self charging hybrid and it becomes a very misleading over engineered system that is out performed by older ICE setups. Or, you could buy a BEV that will out performed all of them. I'm happy to keep trying my luck, all the best 🖐🏻

    The niche for this is people who want to move away from diesels and get good fuel economy. The hybrid option is a good all-rounder for commutes and town driving.
    There is a danger that you have been spoilt by having a Tesla and so are losing a bit of objectivity.

    • @Jamesandkate
      @Jamesandkate  7 років тому

      Dave Cooper I wouldn't say spoilt, but more expectant possibly. This system is almost the same as that fitted to the original Prius, it's advances have been frankly disappointing. I personally wouldn't recommend any hybrid, only plug in hybrids due to the fuel consumption figures.

    • @DavidDeLuge
      @DavidDeLuge 7 років тому

      James and Kate but they only work for people whose lives fit with the charging durations and locations. For me, a Tesla, for example would get me to work and home once before needing a charge. There are no Superchargers anywhere close to my commute. Once I got home, even with the most powerful home charger, I would struggle to be able to get enough into the battery for the round trip the next day and would also rule out using the car at night. So, until charging times come right down, and they will with the ever changing technology in batteries (Huawei have developed a LiPo battery and charger that fully charges in seconds), you have to accept thst pure EV vehicles will not work for many people. Your 2500 mile trip to the continent, for example, included wasting many hours sat waiting for your car to charge; much more than a mild irritant for people with two young kids, for example.
      So, for people who cannot make the transition to full EV yet, a hybrid is the perfect stepping stone. Plug-in hybrids will never be the solution because the majority of people who buy them do so to get the government grant and, if a recent article is to be believed, as many as 75% never ever plug them in.
      I drive a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee and am ashamed to say I have put £6000 of diesel into it in the year since buying it new along with all the pollutants that I now know still come out of diesel engines. I would love to be able to go to an EV but cannot because of my commute distance. A hybrid is the best solution for me at this time and so I will be getting one and am looking now...

    • @Jamesandkate
      @Jamesandkate  7 років тому +1

      Dave Cooper our Tesla is the slowest and with the smaller battery pack. The newer models are now covering 300 miles. Next year we'll have a 150kWh pack rated at over 400 miles so that should cover loads of your journey and late night travel.
      With our trip we did have to stop, but it was no real inconvenience, roughly every three hours for 30/40 mins, we needed the break. Also the chargers are placed mostly along main routes so the divination is minimal.
      We have to remember that a trip like this is normally a one off, or once a year so the inconvenience just doesn't seem to matter. Wasn't aware of the plug in facts, but remember they still work as a hybrid even when depleted so not a complete loss.

    As an EV driver who driven Toyota hybrids quite often, I completely get where you come from - they just can’t compare to EVs in performance or NVH - they are nowhere close; and neither can you drive it like a ‘normal’ car - have to watch your paddle. More annoyingly it basically doesn’t have a gear box after 45mph - which is very noisy when accelerating and going uphill (and this system is inefficient at high speed as it is always coupled to the motor (‘eCVT’)), as well as when you have the heating/AC on when the engine suddenly kicked in... you always have to do something to make it become economical (but there’s no Rev-counter...) - far more precision required than EVs (even the 1st gen Leaf with tragic range doesn’t require that much efforts to have a descent range) To me this middle ground is also the worst... and I get the hostility from people here - most of them have never ever driven an EV and they have nothing to compare to, hence they’ll settle for things like this. Regardless I agree with you, EVs are just way better to drive than this thing (and for Hybrid this can’t compare to Range extender hybrid nor plug in hybrid)... and to be honest I can’t see any benefits of THS over other hybrids (apart from ‘mild hybrid’) , never mind the EVs...

  • @danuk2005

      Gerd Bremer My sisters Honda CRX got me 60mpg (UK). Its not a plug-in and my long motorway trip gave the hybrid part no advantage. The fact the engine is tuned for economy and the body is as slippery as a fish helped. Had to use that car due to a crucial EV charger not working at the time.
      My last long single trip in good weather last year gave my Leaf an effective 172mpg in cost. Generally I clear 100mpge.
      Many hybrids barely give more than 45mpg in town driving.

    • @Jamesandkate
      @Jamesandkate  7 років тому

    IF you wish to un-invent CVT you are not alone. It's like a design from some bygone age - a slipping belt thing in between two cones is it not? They come together and force the effective diameter to be larger, pull apart and this reduces it. Like being able to adjust the sizes of gears in effect. I think - and it is only IMHO - with the advent of clever electronics and dual clutch systems, and instant torque of electric motors, the slowly-gripping CVT system is designed strictly for augmenting torque ie it is in effect a torque convertor ie wasteful just like fluid ones, and is purpose-built for dealing with the shortcomings of ICE designs. You know something is wasteful if it gets hot. The noise turns out to use hardly any energy. It's all about throwing heat away. As I said to one petrol-head: if you could capture the heat energy of a fossil fuel motor, and somehow turn that into usable propulsion, or indeed usable anything (heating in arctic conditions), you could make them over 90% efficient just like electric motors. The noise from the exhaust pipe is just a few watts apparently.

    • @Jamesandkate
      @Jamesandkate  7 років тому

      sleekitwan yes agreed. The problem with ICE being it's optimal window. To slow its inefficient, to fast its inefficient. The CVT puts it in that window but at the expense of an awful drive. There's another problem. EV's can switch off the heater to conserve the energy, IVE is stuck with it, either putting it in to the cabin or radiating to the atmosphere. My view is that the CVT really doesn't aid fuel consumption at all unless driven very sedately, and that will only work with a small percentage of the population.

    • @dingbatt
      @dingbatt 5 років тому

      I know it’s a year later but you need to realise that Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive is an eCVT, which means it doesn’t use any sort of belt. It uses an ICE and two electric motors into a planetary gearbox. So no losses through friction. In countries with high percentage of electricity produced from fossil fuels (eg Australia) it is as ‘green’ as an EV.

    James and Kate - we saw you at Toyota Leicester before you took the CHR out - would have said hi but you were in conversation with the salesman and knew you would be time limited with the car. When you left the staff were very excited about nipping outside to look at your Tesla :)We drove a RAV4 hybrid - which has a 2.5 litre petrol in it. Exactly the same driving experience as you, I felt like I was motoring along in 2nd gear from the revs. So disappointing Toyota are not atleast adding a plug, but there is definitley an MPG gain from the puny battery. Owners are getting 45 MPG (honest John real MPG) from the RAV4 hybrid, which is 10 MPG more than I get from our petrol CRV. Something like a Soul or Sportage petrol would be good for mid to high 30's MPG, so again the CHR is about 7-10 MPG better.Our 4 year old daughters assessment of the CHR in the showroom was "this sucks" broadcast across the room! Kids cannot see out from the rear seats due to the high window line and thick C pillar.So frustrated waiting for an EV that could tow all our camping kit for family holidays, close to opting for a used Leaf or Soul EV for our second car to replace a 10 year old Prius though (which has never had a single fault or niggle). A fuel cell car generates its own power to charge the battery and run the motors and blows water out the exhaust.

    Nice looking car but it seems a bit over priced for what you get by the looks of it....Which is a shame

      Limon Amin yep, the Golf GTE is fantastic with the DSG transmission. Certainly would have made this car better. I don't know why they persist with it when fuel consumption is. I better 😳👎🏻

    Poor review. Exposes the reviewers lack of technical appreciation. Agree with a previous comment whereby their opinion is coloured by the Tesla. Different price! I cannot agree with the comment about noise, mine is as quite as can be expected. I owned a third generation Prius previously and this car is much better thanks to the new platform incorporating double wishbone rear suspension making the handing and ride very nice. As you noted the drive train trans-axle has been improved from previous incarnations and is better.

      John Quinn I’m sorry but I disagree. As I work in EV powertrain I can tell you this ‘self charging’ as it marketed is no better than an economical petrol at an enhanced price. Compared to an full EV, it’s way off. Also we own a Renault Zoe, which I’d choose over any of Toyotas hybrid systems.

      Economical petrol still gives out more CO2.. The petrol C-HR versus the hybrid C-HR is a good example.

      James and Kate very nice. but not everyone can afford one (or have the range and charging issues) and want an affordable hybrid that is also comfy and stylish with some gadgets. the CHR fills this gap pretty well.

      Giles Kennedy I agree, a nice car, but I'd take it with a 1.2 instead of the hybrid system.

    Hybrids require an entirely different driving technique, one which you obviously have not mastered. Exceptionally high mpg can be achieved if you are not overly heavy with your right foot. Please do not pontificate when you obviously do not know how to drive a hybrid.

    • @Jamesandkate
      @Jamesandkate  3 роки тому

      That's the issue. They are advertised as having better MPG than an ICE equivalent, where in reality they don't, without employing a fairy style of driving. These are an absolute waste of time. Save the money and buy an ICE for 5k less or by a full EV and drive how you want

    Hardly count these as ev in the slightest , hope they get no tax incentive, plus seems unchanged from original Prius of years ago , it did a few miles on ev below 25mph , ps needs a good stereo to hear above the noise. Most people who buy same cars always say the same thing , not worth driving D minus as a car , F as a hybrid , mpg figures a joke , cost ? , agree Prius clone , people bought the the Prius but when I drove in the day I laughed at its credentials , stop start , turbo charging low cc engines give better economy, never felt Toyota had good interiors , cheap tacky and age very quickly

      the Kia Niro drives so much better than a Toyota hybrid, and gets better mpg driving it in a real world style rather than hypermiling style. However, the gearbox also broke after 800 miles and took 6 weeks to fix. One thing you can say about the Toyota system is it is reliable - check out the Which? Consumer website and spot what's at or near the top

    I don't get what Toyota is doing these days ?!? These CVT gearboxes suck sooo bad and the engines are too low on torque...just build an EV!! They have all the tech it needs ..

    This review almost put me off getting one fortunately i test drove one i have volvo xc60 R the CHR is nicer and easier to drive and easier to live with. This guy has no clue how to drive a hybid and full of **** mine runs on the flat up to 40 on battery regularly. My drive to work this morning mixture of town and motorway 23 miles 33 minuets 70.9mpg and have averaged over the last 400miles 59.7 if your going to post reviews learn to drive. Oh and never had an issue with rear view and its way bigger than a juke so comparison is stupid.

      You should try us. Were fully conversant with the CVT transmission and the Ni-Mh batteries used in the "self charging" range of hybrids. We've also since had the use of C-HR for a month and were hugely disappointed with the drive and the MPG was shocking when a real driving style was employed. Feel free to direct and technical questions our way as you expressed we know little of the workings??

      I also own a C-Hr Hybrid and am not light footed and overall MPG over 1,435 mls have averaged 54.0 mpg,having had two Prius 2008 and 2008 still think if I had a say in your obvious down on Toyota you still lack any grown up review.Everyone that has sat on the seats in my C-HR Dynamic are impressed on long journeys.Reviewers from now on please give an accurate description or leave it to the professionals PLEASE

    You are clearly perturbed about this car. What is the point of it? Granted, it is squeezing more tiny droplets of efficiency out of a petrol engine, but it isn't 'green'. You made no mention of a plug, which from the quick tour round shows there isn't one. So that's the reason not to buy. But even if it did have one, the pathetic battery size would mean it would almost count for nothing. This car is firmly wedded to fossil fuels. It isn't a hybrid. It's a fossil fuelled car with a complicated powertrain. Put bluntly, it's a deception.

    You two seems to complain about every Toyota hybrids system not been able to go over 10 miles before engine kick in which is a load of rubbish
    I've driven several Toyota and Lexus hybrids and u can use the ev for up to 50 kilometers. U two need to learn how do drive an hybrid
    Why bother going to Toyota dealer to test a car u don't have a clue about driving
    Most Annoying review couple ever

      bj banny I suggest you stop watching our vids then. But I'll just educate you with a few facts. Apply more than 18% throttle and the engine kicks in, that gives on flat ground a 0-30 time of 9 seconds, which means you're driving like a fanny, which is exactly what you need to do to stay in EV mode. These cars achieve no better mph than an economical diesel or petrol unless you employ an unrealistic driving style. This particular model was advertised as being able to achieve 36-40 mph before the ice is required which is absolute garbage. And if it it makes you feel better, I regularly drive a RAV4 hybrid so have ample experience of the system fitted to these models. Thanks for watching 😊👍🏻
