By opening one man's eyes to the world... he opened his own. Robert De Niro (in an Oscar®-nominated performance) and Robin Williams star in this powerful, true story of a maverick doctor and the patients whose lives he changes. Williams plays Dr. Malcolm Sayer, a shy research physician who uses an experimental drug to "awaken" the catatonic victims of a rare disease. De Niro co-stars as Leonard, the first patient to receive the controversial treatment. His awakening, filled with awe and enthusiasm, proves a rebirth for Sayer too, as the exuberant patient reveals life's simple but unutterably sweet pleasures to the introverted doctor. Encouraged by Leonard's stunning recovery, Sayer administers the drug to the other patients. The story of their friendship during this emotional journey is a testament to both the tenderness of the human heart and the strength of the human soul.

There’s more story, emotion and detail in the first 10 minutes than most modern movies

i've noticed that. I started watching 1970's-80's-90's movies off YT. Obviously some can be as corny and popculture of the time as movies now. But alot of them still were amazingly well acted and written.
I think its cuz they used actors that looked like ppl. And now every lead has to look like Blake Lively level. But the problem is they also act as well as her too

My favorite Robin Williams movie. I'm not really a fan of his comedies, but I think his dramas are mostly excellent. I would say he was underrated as a dramatic actor, but I'm not sure he was. I think people mostly agree that he was a fine actor.

I get what you mean. Same thing with Jim Carrey's comedy movies. BUt then he did this incredibly surprising thriller movie - The Number 23.

@@justinTime077 I cannot agree. I've watched the documentary and currently I'm reading the book, and it's even more heart-wrenching than the film

The opening scene where he walks out the front door of the brownstone was a few doors down from my family's house on 14th St in Park Slope. Williams character has my mom's married surname and another doctor in the film has my last name. Crazy alignment.

Great movie, I just watched it for the first time for free on Pluto TV. It was very heartwarming, Robin Williams, and Robert De Niro were fantastic in it.

I saw this movie. So in the end, Leonard went back to being brain dead? When he was actually functioning THAT was his awakening. Him awake from his 30 year coma. Then at the end he slowly went BACK INTO his coma?

Yes. The sad part of this story is that the drug they used for the catatonic patients only worked for so long. They built up a resistance to it over time. I think the point of the story is that they were allowed to live again...even if it was for a short while.
