Can't believe that you never heard of Menudo. They were HUGE in the mid 80's. Images of the boys were plastered all over the place. Guess, (in a way) I can understand, simply because (prior to this), all of their stuff was in Spanish. (Puerto Rican). The lead (Robby Rosa) was the group's first English speaking member. They were young kids. Usually the oldest member was no more than 15 or 16. If/when their voices began to change, they had to retire, and a new kid was introduced, in order to fill the void.
Ah, 1985. I was 16 and totally obsessed with Menudo. You should check out these guys as adults: Draco Rosa - Lie Without a Lover (the lead singer); Ricky Martin - Come With Me (the little one in the pink shirt); Ray Acevedo - Addictive Love (the little one in the yellow shirt); and Charlie Masso - Yo No Vivo Sin Ti (the tall one on the end). I really had to go searching, it's been years since any of them recorded in English. (They're Puerto Rican.)

This iteration of the group is by far is the best. The dance, music and video were a product of the time. They are essentially the Hispanic answer to the New Edition, who in turn was the long awaited answer to the Jackson 5. You can tell the influence of J5 on early NE with only the simple side to side dance step that later evolved to the more intricate moves that were J5/Temptation inspired. Even the Osmonds had to take notice and change up to compete (One Bad Apple) Menudo wasn't going to mimic that, but instead introduced a bit more jazz/ Broadway/ West Side Story vibe. Troop would in later years take that to a completely new level. One issue that probably stunted any longevity, would be the ousting of aging members, that being the ripe old age of 16. Hard to keep a strong following that endures generations. Only two went on to do greater things afterward, Bobby Rosa (Salsa movie/Solo career) and Ricky Martin ( Mi Vida Loca fame). Still, they shine a light on the possibility of any other race that black R&B/ Boy Band hybrid that gave us the likes of New Kids, Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, ect ect. They did their thing.

As a teen Puerto Rican I wanted to be one of them… Talk about representation at its best… Menudo started back in the early 70’s and created Pop Boy Band era… way before New Edition etc… but they were only famous and known in Latin America till the early 80’s…. Taking USA by storm…Soon after New Edition came out with Pop Corn Love and New Edition would become the American version … ( in my head )… not trying to start a debate …. Yep, I don't remember this video, but it looks like the early to mid-80s. In defense of Menudo, there was a lot of this type of "twirling around" and running through the streets in the dance videos of that era. As I recall perceiving it then as a teenager then I considered it a modern version of, or homage to the Hollywood musicals of my parents and grandparents generation. It wasn't my favorite type of music then or now, but I kinda got what they were doing, even though I didn't really dig it. I find that it's grown on me a little since then. Below... You were watching a 1985 Hispanic macho fantasy video. Menudo was a Puerto Rican boy band with an ever-evolving cast as boys rotated out at around age 16. Menudo started in 1967 and disbanded in 2009. Some of Ricky's big solo songs (all fun to listen to) are _Livin' la Vida Loca_ (1999, which is perhaps his best known), _She Bangs_ (2000), and his cover of _La Bamba_ (1998). I grew up in the 80's and I loved what was back then. Listening and watching to the 80's today, I'm not so sure it was so good... I mean, Michael Jackson and a few more were great, but generally, the music back then was more about experimenting the new electronic opportunities than inventing new music. It replaced the Rock of the 70's. And I won't say a word about the outfits and haircuts... 😊 This song (which I didn't know) is a stereotype of this period. Probably great back then but boring and even kind of stupid when watched today... -------------- I would like to make 2 special suggestions almost no one will give you: 2 bands: The Warning: start with "survive" at TedX, and then "21st century blood" official video. They have a new song called "dust to dust" which is incredible. Motion Device: "thick skin" and then "doves and snakes'. There's a reason almost no one knows them, but they still are amazing! Menudo is also a type of soup that they make in the Hispanic community. Ricky Martin got his start with this group. This is great old music.
