    Great vid, my dude. I've had an Axe-FX II for SEVEN YEARS...to celebrate, I ordered a shiny new Axe-FX III Mk2 Turbo that should be here in a few days. Been doing some homework in anticipation and it's actually quite a bit more "full featured" than the 2. To be expected, I suppose. Can't wait to play around with reamping! They made it SUPER easy on the 3!! Keep rockin'. 🤘

    I've been recording with my AF3 into Logic successfully for a while now.. but have not been recording a dry signal as I know I probably should (i.e. best practices) so your video encourages me to do just that.. the re-amping possibilities are SO convenient when you use your FAS device as an audio interface.. and I'll create these routings as part of a Logic template.. thanks!

    Good stuff! Thanks for putting this together. I was curious what happens if your daw is set to 44.1 and we record at the fixed 48k sample rate in the AxeFX.

      If you are just capturing the audio signals from the Axe output (i.e. you have analog cables from the Axe to an interface) then it would be fine. If you are using the digital I/O (USB, SPDIF) then you'll want your DAW session in 48k. FWIW I have everything in my home studio set at 48K

    thanks.. I understand that the DI signal will be much weaker, but when I try this in logic, it’s usually only around -35db .. while yes, the fully processed signal has the right volume in the end, I still somehow have the feeling that it should be a bit higher (but I guess the strength of the DI signal doesn’t matter that much anyways, as this just means I have a lot of headroom that I can play with for reamping?)

    • @mathew_dale
      @mathew_dale  8 місяців тому

      Yeah as long as it’s re-amping okay having that low of a level is fine. Keep in mind that it’s just the raw signal from the pickups.

    • @mathew_dale

      @@richardspillers6282 Yep. You'll just need to use "input monitoring" as opposed to monitoring straight from the Fractal. I'd add Out 2 to the grid and use your track source from that, enable input monitoring on the track, and bypass Out 1 on the grid so you are only hearing audio from the DAW.

    Why not change the channel mode to stereo instead of recording two monos and panning?

    • @mathew_dale
      @mathew_dale  2 місяці тому +1

      You certainly could. I prefer two mono channels for the flexibility- if I don't want to necessarily hard pan each guitar track, set up a wet/dry routing, or quickly choose between two different IRs (that I typically set up in my presets) for a preferred mono track.

    There's some basic stuff you're breezing over. When you plug the USB cable from the FM3 into the computer and send the signal to your DAW, what are you hearing and how? For example, I tell my computer that the signal is coming from the FM3, and the output should go to the computer's built-in speakers. The DAW's input meters indicate that it's hearing the signal, but I'm hearing nothing. Nothing is coming out of the internal speakers. Where am I going wrong?

    Is it possible to record Dry signal from output 1, wet from output 2 reverb and from output 3 wet only delay. I mean if it is possible to record delay and reverb separately?

    • @mathew_dale
      @mathew_dale  6 місяців тому

      Yes, depending on your routing and if you want your separate delay and reverb to be stereo or mono. The easy way would be using USB 5 to record the unprocessed direct sound, out1 (USB 1 or 2) for the dry amp tones, and out2 for the wet fx- delay hard panned L (USB 3) and verb hard panned R (USB4). Then set up the Axe grid to match. You can route the verb and delay in parallel to keep the signals free of the other effect.

    So why would you use your "normal" audio interface? I have an Axe FX 3 and an RME Babyface. TBH I have not set up my Axe to be my audio interface. Should I make my Axe FX 3 what I monitor from?

  • @IHSisable
    @IHSisable 2 місяці тому +1

    and what is the latency if you rerecord your guitar ?

    • @mathew_dale
      @mathew_dale  2 місяці тому

      Depends more on your computer and buffer size in your DAW than the Fractal. If I monitor from the DAW I'm usually at 6 ms. But you don't need to monitor from the Daw in a lot of cases- you can do hardware monitoring to eliminate the latency.

    • @mathew_dale
      @mathew_dale  Рік тому

      It's a workflow thing, If later on in the mixing process you hear things you'd like to change (gain level, try different IRs, dryer or wetter fx, etc) you can make adjustments while keeping the same performance.

    • @mathew_dale
      @mathew_dale  Рік тому

      I've also worked with a number of studio engineers remotely that always want a "dry" signal to use their own plugins so it's nice to build it into your workflow early.

    • @RayBachGuitar
      @RayBachGuitar Рік тому +1

      @@mathew_dale I understand. That makes sense because the FM3 is not a plugin (where, in a plugin, you could tweak parameters after recording). So the workaround using a hardware device, like the FM3, is to also record a DI track for re-amping in case there are any parameter adjustments needed to improve the initial recorded track. Got it.

    Why record in stereo at all? The instrument is mono

    • @mathew_dale
      @mathew_dale  11 місяців тому +2

      Really depends on application and use. I’d hardly say that the guitar is solely a mono instrument these days with numerous uses of ping pong delays, circular delays, dual delays, etc. delay and reverb aside, using chorus, flanger, and other modulation effects often sound better in stereo. Greasy 80 pitch detuned tones are achieved in stereo. Having two IRs hardpanned can not only make your live tones more “3D” but give you more control for blending in the studio without having to reamp right away. And having separate amp tones on each channel can give you similar benefits for blending and mixing. Eric Johnson, Andy Timmons, the Edge and so many others all use stereo in their live rigs and in the studio, why not embrace it especially in a digital ecosystem where adding the second chanel is so easy.

    • @hexchad765
      @hexchad765 11 місяців тому

      @@mathew_dale excellent, thank you for the details. I meant the cable coming off of the guitar is mono
      But the output effects at the end of the chain might be stereo
      So just record stereo because it's easy
      In summary of what you said
      Edit: if you record stereo and Pan left or right, doesn't that defeat the purpose?
