How to Install a Hard Start Kit in Your Air Conditioner
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- Does your air conditioner need a hard start kit? If you need some help with it, in this video I show you how to install and wire a SPP6 Hard Start Kit. Here are some of the reasons why you might need to put one in:
- Your AC unit is getting old
- Occasionally trips breaker
- Long refrigerant line sets
- You have multiple air conditioners
- You have a non-bleed TXV metering device
- The compressor is locked up and changing the capacitor didn't help
- If you have a home power generator
- If you have known voltage fluctuation issues
- Lights dim when the air conditioner turns on

If you are wondering why don't all AC condenser units have hard start kits or start capacitors, it's simply because manufacturers decided to cut costs. Back in the day, almost all AC units had a start capacitor. It does prolong the life of the unit but it will work with just a run capacitor (the silver one) so they decided to cut the "extra part" out. Just like cellphones used to have EMF blockers but since they were expensive, manufacturers decided to cut costs and stop putting them in.

I can't believe how many videos this dude makes that I've used. Thank you so much
Love this young man....soooo much helpful information with all his UA-cam videos....my winter home in Florida thanks you!! lol I've referenced you more times than I can recall!! Thank you so much👍👍👍👍👍👍
A contractor used by a neighbor wants $300 to do this. The part costs $20, it took me 10 minutes. Think I'll take the rest of the day off!!
That’s good. HVAC mechanical is like auto mechanic. They charge you a leg for repairs, but if you can do it, you just pay parts! 😀
It cost a lot of money to put a van on the road. Typically around $1,500-$2,000 a day. They are not charging $300 for no reason.
The two wire hard start you have in your hand has a positive temperature coefficient thermistor under that top cap. Not a potential relay. It opens and closes due to temperature rise and fall, not an electromagnet
Thank you for the correction! Good to know!
True tech knows, not diy'er.
Haters gonna hate. I train people, common everyday people, in emergency medicine techniques. Many have gone on to save lives......DIY'ers.
So hypothetically if one has this on their AC Unit and they live in say the DESERT, where daytime temps are 100+, this is worse than having nothing? correct?
good to know but could you explain further...would the 3 wire kit have a potential relay..
Dude... I ordered hard start kits for my 3 HVAC units, but I was not going to install them until I saw you do it! Again, much thanks and kudos to you.
CAUTION HOME OWNER DISCHARGE.. THE CAP AT THE TERMINALS. BEFORE TOUCHING IT BARE HANDS...ZAP.
How to discharge: take a screw driver and bridge it from common to herm and then common to fan.
I have not seen or heard - died by the Discharge of these capacitors. It hurts a little bit, but you will not die from it....
You haven't heard about the "ZAP" because they never lived to tell the story...j/k...I dropped a screwdriver on one terminal and the other part hit grounded metal and it burnt the screwdriver to the terminal. I had to break it free. Definitely scared me.
@@thembones12it has 240volts smarty
So if I already have a capacitor installed, should I take that out before installing my hard start kit?
Love your videos! Very informative. Open Question for the HVAC Gurus...
I know Start performance improvement with a 5-2-1 Hard Start Capacitor Kit is not as great on SCROLL compressors, compared to RECIPROCAL types (many Y.T. vids show reductions of Inrush Amps by as much as 45% after installing a 5-2-1 Kit - I assume these are on Reciprocal compressor units).
At best, I've seen only about a 9% reduction in Inrush Amps on my Rheem 5-Ton Scroll Compressor aftter the 5-2-1 Kit was installed.
Is this a normal "improvement" to see when matching the 5-2-1 Hard Start kit (biggest capacitor) to a Scroll compressor, or should I be seeing lower Inrush results than this?
Install Story/DETAILS, for anyone interested:
So, I just installed a CPS 5-2-1 CSRU3 Hard Start KIT in my 7YR old Rheem 5-ton SCROLL compressor/condenser unit, ( was running fine), but was slightly slower, buzzier, and metered with INRUSH Amps a bit above the specification on start-ups, recently.
L.R.A. specification for this 5-Ton split unit is: 152.9 Amps.
BEFORE 5-2-1 Install... Compressor "C" wire Metered INRUSH = 157.2 Amps.
AFTER 5-2-1 Install... Compressor "C" wire Metered INRUSH = 156.1 Amps.
Metered several "call for cooling" startups @ 150-155Amps INRUSH, AFTER Install: Best score was 147Amps INRUSH, with most starts hitting 152-155Amps.
Disappointed (thinking the 5-2-1 kit was a dud), I metered INRUSH again, a day later, on a few more start-ups - I found that my INRUSH was averaging between 142-146 Amps and the compressor has a more positive start, no buzzy wind-up; lighting in home doesn't dim during start, as before. All wiring terminals checked & re-verified, good.
(Same weather, thermostat settings, no other system changes since install day).
Odd - I'm unsure why unit seemed to perform better the following day.
Thanks for reading!
Capacitors are cheap. If the hard start kit is best why don't manufacturers just use a bigger capacitor to start with? Thanks.
This Subco uses a Positive Temperature Coefficient Relay (as stated on their website) not a Potential Relay. Not Good! Only use Hard Start Kits that use a true Potential Relay. The RectorSeal Kickstart (2 wire) and the 5-2-1 Compressor Saver (3 wire) hard start kits use a Potential Relay. I recommend the Kickstart (it uses 2 wires that connect to the Run Capacitor - HERM and COM). But the Compressor Saver is also good (3 wires with one connecting to the common / ground on the Contactor relay). They both work the same way - the Potential Relay detects the pickup voltage (back EMF). This causes the relay to disconnect the start capacitor when the compressor reaches about 75% speed (usually less than a second). Note: Supco does have hard start kits with a Mechanical Potential Relay (Models 3W1, 3W2, & 3W3).
One wire goes to common one wire goes to herm
Awesome work son I like how you explain everything I'm learning the trade you do a lot better explaining then some of the older techs keep them coming please.
Thank you! Glad you find them helpful! The plan is to keep em coming :)
I have a Lennox 2 stage 1 seer 5 ton unit, the lights dim when it fires on, do I need a hard start kit? Can I even put one in on a 2 stage unit ?
My friend, you are 100% awesome for teaching us how to service our HVAC. I cannot thank you enough.
I’m just trying to understand in my head how this works....lol
Compressors are very specific about what size capacitors is will use. How is it that that the 3 in 1 Supco hard start kit will work for multiple different units that require different size caps to run the compressor. It’s like a one size fits all.
It's really only the run capacitor that needs to be a specific size. The start capacitor just needs to be 'big enough'. So once it is started, the start capacitor is taken out of the circuit by a relay.
Man, you are the best!!! Thank you very much for your great job!!
It actually changes the phase angle during start up, which increases start up torque. The relay will drop out once the run winding gets up to speed.
Slip
Can I put one without having all them problems?
im loving watching the a/c videos.
I can't believe I was quoted over $700 to do install a hard start kit. Item cost me less than $15 on amazon and took less than 5 minutes to install. Thank you!
I read that a hard start kit must match your system’s tonnage and or compressor HP. So how do we choose the correct hard start kit for our system? Thank you 😊
There's a 1,2,3 ton start up and a4, 5 ton startup. Look on your a/c what tonnage it is and choose one or the other. If you live where it's hot get a 3wire kit not a two wire kit.
Sorry just saw how old your comment was

Probably HVAC guys who watch it and get pissed that they will lose some easy jobs. I just ordered a replacement on ebay for $30 (including shipping). HVAC guy would charge $125+/hour and another 80-90 for the part.
I agree, that dude is a awesome teacher.
Not this ac guy. More power to you. Theres no shortage of work. And just to add a reminder he said to make sure thers no coil behind the screw. 100 percent the number 2 thing i see with do it yourselfers. -Charge in the ozone-. Number 2 would be a 30 amp fuse for a 3 amp low voltage, now at the minimum you got a shorted wire in the outdoor unit and a fried transformer. At minimum
Thanks so much! Compressor kept causing a locked rotor. Installing this hard start kit has helped so far! You are great at explaining what has to be done and how.

thank you!! We live in Dallas, TX and just paid $$$ (10 times mark up) to have an A/C repair man install this. Glad I decided to learn more about this. Being a homeowner is tough (and can be expensive) so you empower & educate us consumers.
Only thing I’d add is do the wires matter or can you use the two interchangeable
You saved me a lot of money. It took me literally 3 minutes to install the hard start kit and the compressor started right away.
"Literally" 3 minutes. Ok
For someone coming to this video to learn how to wire it. Go to 5:20 timeline, One wire to common, one wire to herm.
fml dude, man, I wish I would've seen this comment first. I hope others do cuz that was 5 minutes I'll never get back lol

Very well explained, and I liked the research you did on all the reasons to install the Boost. Thank you for taking the time to do this video for us !
Took you 6 minutes to say one wire goes to common and one to herm
So I have a dual capacitor just like you showed. Will any hard start kit work regardless of the microfarads your capacitor is rated at? They don’t have any specifications like the capacitors with microfarads or anything? Great video thanks for posting
Can you leave the 5-2-1 start relay connected and ADD. The booster ? Or you 5-2-1 relay should be removed prior?
The relay should be removed if you will be putting in the 2-wire hard start kit. Or at least disconnected.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. If I could like 10 times I would do it. Thanks 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I have zero experience in AC and I was able to install the hard start kit following your instructions. Now my unit is working great! Thanks

OK to replace a 70/5 440v with a +/-5% with one that is 70/5 440v but is +/-6% instead of 5%?
Yes, that is okay. 👍 Even if it was +/-10%
two wires from the hard start kit, which one is going to herm and which one is going to Common? thanks
It doesn't matter, either wire can go to either side.

So would you put one on a brand new unit or one that is 2 - 4 years old. Love your channel. You gave me some good advice many of times on here 🤜🏾
Glad to hear the videos have been helpful! It won't hurt anything but there's a chance that it will prolong the life of the compressor. Back in the day most units had them installed by default but to cut costs they stopped doing that.
You are the man!!! That kind of simple information can change lives. It worked, and it was soooooo simple!!! Thank you!!!
Is Boost spp6 compatible with 45+5mdf ?
Many thanks!
Yes. 👍
Some SPP6 hard start kits are for PSC motor only. How do I know if it can be used for my AC?
It's best to keep it simple. If there are no capacitors at all in your unit, then it's best not to put any hard start kits in there.
You my favorite technician
IN my Carrier, I already see a Carrier HN51KC024 coil (relay I suppose). Do I just leave it in the system and still connect the Hard Start Kit of placing the 2 wires on the Herm and the Common as directed? What is instructed to do?
What size hard start kit do I need? Will any hard start that corresponds to the tonnage on my unit be fine?
This one will work on any size: amzn.to/4elGHM3
I have a 13,500 btu portable a/c unit that wouldn't start when powering the house with a 5 kw generator, I installed this exact one and it ran perfect! That one and a small window unit in the bedroom got us through a 9 day power outage after a hurricane. now, after seeing this video, I will install my spare one on my house 3 ton unit and get another spare.
Thanks as always for a great video!
Thank you for sharing that! I'm sure someone else will come along who is experiencing a similar situation. Thanks for watching, stay cool!
The part you missed in your explanation. Do I still hook just the 2 wires up and leave the relay connected? Mine is an older trane that has the capacitor hooked up to the relay with 3 wires RLY1097 relay

Thanks Young school,
Us old techs appreciate the refresher.
I'm trying to power an 8000 btu, 715 watt window unit with a 1400 watt running, 2k watt generator. I put in a hard start kit, and the compressor wont kick on. It tries, the gen throttles up and the led light I also run off it dims for a second, but the compressor just wont kick on. Its tp-5 kit. Is the kit too small?
How can I decide which would be better to use, a hard starter or a soft starter?
My system is old (about 17 years now) but my compressor is still working OK as far as I can tell.
The power to the house is notably less when the AC starts up and runs, as I can tell it by the fans (not ceiling fans, but fans like you would plug into the wall outlet) in the house will run at a slower speed while the AC is running and resume their normal faster speeds when the AC goes off.
Do you recommend a hard start kit for a 10 year old lennox AC compressor unit? I just replaced my capacitor for it.
Are hard start kits for any home unit ?
Like from 1.5 tone to 5 tones ?
Yes. This one right here should fit any size residential unit: amzn.to/4bjAMnK
My unit has a dual capacitor, I tested and it is bad. It also has a hard start. However the fan part of dual capacitor is not being used instead there is a small run capacitor. I’m not sure why or what to do. Any suggestions on why and how I should hook up now?
Sounds like your unit has 2 separate capacitors for the compressor and the fan motor. You can either replace both of the capacitors and wire them up exactly the same way you have them now or you can combine the two capacitors into one dual capacitor. I have two videos which may help you better understand what I am talking about:

@@WordofAdviceTV Thank you! I have learned a lot from your videos. You are the best at explaining everything making it possible for a novice like myself to comprehend. The directions on the “Hard Start Multiplier” say to hook up each of it’s black wires to the run capacitor. But each of it’s two wires were previously hooked up to the Dual Capacitor, 1 of its wire’s on Therm, the other on Common. I took the run capacitor off and replaced it because it was rusted out and taped with electrical tape - I don’t understand why! I tested the not so pretty one and to my surprise the multi meter reading was right on. I don’t understand why the company that has been fixing our AC since day one would do this. I lost my husband recently in a vicious horrific crime. He took care of everything. Now I am learning. The HVAC Co. that he’d used charged $838.00 in 2018, 656.00 in 2016, and on & on the charges have been consistent & it was a pretty sloppy hook up. Not sure what to do! Please advise or suggestions or reasons would be of great help and appreciated.
I didn't hear you mention which terminal takes which of the black wires to Herm and Capacitor. I surmise that it doesn't matter which wire goes to which spade and that I could connect either wire to either spade, correct?
From the two black wires of the booster does it not matter which black goes to herm or common
With this one it does not matter. But I like to put the black wire that has the jumper connector on the common. 👍
Great video! How would you wire a 5-2-1 start kit?
Thank you! 1 would go to one side of the start capacitor, 2 goes to herm on the run capacitor, and 5 goes to L1 on the contactor (sometimes L2. If you look where the run capacitor common wire goes to, just make sure you don't put 5 on the same side as the common from the run capacitor) And the other wire from the start capacitor will go to common on the run capacitor.
Question to be sure:: Does it NOT matter which wire goes to which terminal? (Other than fan term.)
Yes, either wire can go to either terminal (herm or C)
@@WordofAdviceTV thank you so much!
i bought a spp6 for my compressor. I had to change out the dual because it read 0 microfarads. It is suppose to be a 50 microfard. Im going to install the hard start? Any advice?
can we use a hard start for fan too
No, not for the fan. At least I have never seen it done before..
Hi There, do you have to turn off the breaker for the AC unit before installing the kit? Any electrical you need to turn off?
Yea if not you’ll get a good jolt from 120v but 220v is not so forgiving
Can you do a video on transformers and your thermostat 24V please
Very good video, what it u have 2 capacitors 1for fan 1for compressor? where do the 2 wires go?
They would only go to the capacitor that is hooked up to the compressor. (the larger capacitor of the two)

So you would bypass the old hard start kit as well right?
The old hard start kit would be discarded. Can't have 2 of them installed at the same time.
the techician told me when I replace my bad fan motor, I should also replace the "hard kick start", it is a Carrier 24ABC636A0030010 outside unit, In the video, you mentioned fan motor don't need a hard start?
Question, do you think putting a 230mfd +_10%hard start kit on a 3 ton be ok? Or should I use a 108mfd +_10%
Thanks! I just replaced the 35/5 run cap on my 5-year old 3 ton Goodman, I'll be ordering this to add to it.
Also, how does one know when the Hard Start Kit is bad and needs to be replaced? How is it tested to prove it's the problem in the compressor motor unit and not the actual start capacitor?
Most HVAC techs have a meter that can check them.
Kyle, but why use a "tech'? The product is self explainable on its function and capability in installation. I was asking about what indication is seen, heard, etc. if the product is bad to replace it? One can always check the Run Capacitor to see if it's bad. Does the Kickstart Kit test in the same way? How?
While trouble shooting my ac starting with the capacitor no fix, I then was checking the plunger switch and a screw driver sparked and the fan that was working stopped. Where should I look for a fuse? Thanks for any help.
How do you know what size or model to buy for your unit?
The hard start kit I used is good for compressors that are 1/2 HP to 10 HP. Which pretty much entails just about all of the residential condenser units.
So it doesn’t matter which wire goes to common and which wire goes to Herm?
Thanks for doing these videos. They help...
The two black wires coming from the hard start kit? You are right, it does not matter which wire goes where. Glad to hear the videos help! :)

Supposedly I had one installed on my heat pump but when it cuts on it sounds like it’s slapping the backside of my mobile home. Now, I had to use emergency heat for a short while to add extra heat to my home one night before going to bed. I noticed when it turned on it was very gentile when starting. So, my question is, are there two sides that can be wired up for a hard start??
Is it really beneficial to install this on every AC unit which is working just fine? I have heard mixed inputs. Some say it help reduce start stress on compressors and some say it put load on compressors with hard start? So confusing.
I have done some research and it does reduce the Inrush Amperage however not sure if it elongates the compressor life or shortens it?
I don't have a good answer for you either. At one job I had, we were trained to promote hard starts in every unit to prolong its life like you are saying.. (that company had commissions) and at another job we only used hard start kits as a band-aid or last resort (if the compressor is struggling to start) because it is harder on the compressor. (no commissions) So my conclusion is that there is no need for a hard start kit unless there are conditions present that require it. I listed those conditions in the video. So yeah :) I don't have a right answer but that's my thoughts on it.
I ordered the startup kit my unit only has a delay and the capacitor and contacted do I remove the delay completely it's a 20 yr. Old ruud
You would remove the old capacitor and relay. I actually did that on my unit right here:ua-cam.com/video/hC0nFT1XPcI/v-deo.html
I was outside and my AC start up like a maniac screaming...I am glad the hard start capacitor on this tutorial clip is easy to easy to follow! I can do it.
😂😂
Thank you man.
Hey man that is a junk hard start kit!! why don’t you at least show a good one.. that one won’t break a compressor free. the three wire is way Better
I would like a video about sizing a hard start capacitor to an existing run capacitor.
Would this work in 5000btu will down unit I want to run off grid with a 1000W inverter?
So, If you were to install in your unit, you would remove the relay and hard start, then just wire in the new hard start kit to the run cap?
Yes, if I were to put in the SPP6, I would take out the old start capacitor and relay.
Thank you. That was a great, easy to understand learning presentation. I'm terrible at fixing anything electrical, but this was a big help. Great job!
You’re awesome! @wordofadvice
Thanks for answering my earlier question. I wondered if you still monitor these old videos. So I just installed a Supco SPP6 and it only dropped my inrush from 122 Amps to 117 Amps. Does it need to charge up or something before it works. I measured the capacitance of it stand alone and it's about 95 uF - I think that's low but shouldn't it have made a bigger difference anyway? My system has a 55/5 uF Run Cap (3.5 ton).
What if I put a hard start kit for 5 ton machines into a 3 ton machine? We’ll it’s that I don’t know how many tons my condenser is. I had a company install it that removed some details from the machine. It looks like a 3 ton model I see online though.
That's all I needed to know thank you for uploading your videos.
Ugh. I just spent $350 on this with 1.5 lb of Freon in my 13 year old unit. I feel like an idiot. Im a big fan of DIY but I didn't know anything about this until AFTER the work was done. I'm such a sucker. Great video.
It’s called tuition
Great job having the extra cap as a prop, very helpful! I bought a kit last year and forgot how I was to wire it, Great help!
I love all of your AC videos.
4:50 to get to the point 🤷🏻♂️
My apologies that it took so long. I tried to answer as many frequently asked questions as I could besides just showing how to install it.
So it's a capacitor for your capacitor but dedicated to the compressor.
SPP6 can be used for Goodman compressor 3-4 tons?
Yes. This one right here can be used for just about any size air conditioner: amzn.to/4ekN6a5
@@WordofAdviceTV thanks for your reply. I live in TX, so I will use 5-2-1, could you please recommend 5-2-1 product is general have good rating in Amazon. Thank you.
Can you make a video on how to install a circuit board, on a furnace or Airhundler that doesn't use a board.
