I went into this show 100% blind. Had no idea it was a manga or such a long running anime at all. And I'm so happy I did because I loved everything about it. I have a co-worker who's an immigrant from Bulgaria and I always recommend shows to her and for this one I said to her, "Now this is a weird one, but trust me, you will fall in love with everyone on this show." Keep in mind she's in here mid 50's. She came back after a couple days off after I recommended it and told me, "You were 100% right."

    - Sanji is protective over Nami simply because she's a woman; it could have been any woman. Their specific relationship doesn't play a part in this dynamic.
    - Luffy is very strong (not just agile).
    - "highly unorthodox" is a perfect description of Garp, "crazy" works too.
    - The reason Nami trusts Arlong is that, within his crew, there's a rule against lying about money. While this is touched upon during the poker game, it's more emphasized in the manga.

    • @ahshahshajsa
      @ahshahshajsa Рік тому +24

Arlong being fair with money is also shown when Nezumi asks for double the money. Arlong's willing to give that to him until Nezumi talks shit.

    • @levisamom5069

I think it also is some sort of a coping mechanism for nami... "we don't lie about money" is something she keeps telling herself because it has to be right... Otherwise all her efforts would've been for nothing... She can't imagine the thought of arlong deceiving her

I would argue that Garp is supportive, to some extent. He doesn't like that Luffy is a pirate, and if he could, he would do everything to change it, he just wanted to know if Luffy is ready.
He can't stop Luffy, but he can delay him enough untill he's strong enough to survive at least your average pirate opponents.
He already executed Roger, and probably countless other pirates, he's not too hasty to execute his own family.

Ive been watching the anime for more than 12 years and none of my friends never gave it a chance and thought it was just weird. Now those same friends who watched the Netflix came to me and said, I didn't know One Piece was good. I've been trying to tell them that One Piece is more than just about its wackyness and fight scenes, it actually has heart. The main premise maybe about searching for the One Piece, but as you progress it becomes alot deeper than just a treasure adventure. Til this day, we still don't know what the one piece is, but I have a feeling the One Piece isn't a treasure, I think its something more profound and it will change the world.

Sanji nature is being Gentleman towards any Ladies. He treats Women very special and never ever hurts women. He is kind a Simp in One Piece Anime. Sanji in La is more romantic vibes towards any women. So he upset someone bad mouth Nami is just his nature. Plus about Zoro and Sanji Rivalry is begain from Zoro starts bad mouth about Nami during Arlong Arc. So Sanji take that as an offense and hates Zoro from that point on. Technically, they don’t hate each other but they love to argue a lot and always ended up with a fight.
Oh and Luffy personality is prefer anything fun and always care free. To the point that he doesn’t care about danger and acts like a Fool from time to time. Oh and Luffy will believe in Anything. And literally trust anyone even they are first met if he think that, that person is not a bad person.
I want to explain why Garp didnt care that Luffy be a Pirate and against his dream of wanting Luffy to be a Marine. But it is considered spoilers so, I wouldn’t say anything. Every Monkey D. Family has wild paths. I’ll not saying anything.

Garp very much did care that Luffy wanted to become a pirate in both the manga and the live action.
We see this in more recent flashbacks too, but even back when he was first introduced, he was calling shanks a bad influence for making luffy a pirate.
In the live action, I get the impression he only changes his mind about Luffy due to Koby's talk

Also, Sanji is upset over the guy badmouthing Nami, and wanting the hug, because he's a flirt with a crush on her. He has a lot of respect and appreciation of and for women. He didn’t want someone to badmouth her.

Most people don't catch on. Garp really was on a mission to stop his Grandson Luffy and force him to become a marine instead. But when he saw Gol.D.Roger in him, given his conversation with Zeff and prior interaction with Luffy, he changed his mind right then and there. But being a very proud man and proud marine, he played it off like he was testing Luffy this whole time (which he wasn't).

Before this show started production, one of the two head showrunners got a chance to speak with the original author Eichiro Oda, basically in an attempt to convince Oda to give them the greenlight. He explained to Oda that in his eyes, One Piece is a story about not allowing our trauma or pain to define us. It's about moving forward and finding something to believe in, using our past to help shape our future, and never giving up on our dreams no matter what we've been through.
After he was finished explaining his understanding of One Piece as a story, Oda reached over, placed a hand on his shoulder, and said 'I have complete faith in you now'.
This adaptation understands the beating heart of One Piece, and that really makes it something special.

Thanks so much for letting this story and its characters into your heart, V! Many here have already mentioned what a special story Oda-sensei has created, and as a long-time fan of the anime, it does my heart good to see so many newcomers appreciate it.
A few notes on your reaction, and things you noted:
"His stupid little hat, it's so funny!" She said while wearing her cat's sombrero🤣
Speaking of hats, Zeff does indeed wear an unusually tall toque. But that's nothing compared to the one in the anime -- it's almost as tall as he is! Doing that in live action would have been good for a laugh, but probably hopelessly impractical. Recreating his braided mustache was already impressive, and likely difficult enough.
The one with the huge lips is named Choo. Oda-sensei designed him as a smelt-whiting fish-man, and if you think those lips are extreme, you should see how he looks in the anime! Choo's look in live action is positively restrained. By the way, his name comes from the Japanese sound effect for a kiss (like *smooch*).
The pinwheel is an especially poignant item for Nami, although this episode doesn't explain all the reasons why. It's also the inspiration for her new tattoo -- a pinwheel and a tangerine.

Useless hint: You've actually seen the guy at the end before, albeit very briefly.

zoro and sanji are always like that and its really hilarious in the anime. in the live action it looks more serious but in the anime its more goofy and funny.
also luffy is really strong despite being skinny, he was tortured, i mean trained by his grandpa. you should definitely watch the anime and we will be here to watch it with you. i dont mind watching it again all the way through.

As for Garp, he was definitely trying to catch and prevent Luffy from following his dreams - out of his protective fear that Luffy would meet a similar fate to Gold Roger (...another family relative...? Perhaps?). But, Koby manages to convince him to change his outlook, and the moment when he says, "maybe I've been going about this the wrong way" is the moment when he decides to test Luffy and believe in him and hope that he will be strong enough to survive following his dreams of adventure.

Shanks and Mihwak are rivals and friends. Their fights when Shanks still had two arms were very well known in all the seas. Akagami (Shanks) is probably the only pirate that (in the heights of live action) Dracule respects.

I liken any adaptation to trying to paint an oil painting with water colours or crayons.
Novels, comic books, manga and anime offer the author completely different sets of tools to engage and grip the audience. And because those tools are vastly different from medium to medium, something that works in one medium doesn't necessarily translate well to another.
Take the literary device of the "inner monologue" for example. It's great when you read it in novels, comics and manga, but using it in live action and animation means you are going to lose your audience. So, when adapting the inner monologue you need to find other ways to get your point across.
Going back to the analogy: Imagine having the task to paint the Mona Lisa with water colours. How do you do it? You could try to do a one-to-one recreation of the painting but that won't really do justice to the Mona Lisa because oil colours blend in different ways than water colors. What you will get is a pale imitation of the Mona Lisa.
This is why most Japanese live-action adaptations don't work by the way. They transfer the source material *exactly* as it is on screen and the result is often not something you can take seriously.
So painting the Mona Lisa with water colors doesn't quite work if you do it accurately. What actually works is using the water colors and the base of the Mona Lisa to create in your own way, with your own set of tools, something that invokes the same *feeling* you get while seeing the original Mona Lisa.
So the adaptation is now not a question of "how do I translate the original on screen" but rather "what does the original make me feel".
Ultimately, what does the original *mean* for me?
This is why most Western adaptations don't work. Most of them are made by people who just don't get the source material and in some cases even actively hate it. And their lack of connection shows on screen.
The main reason the Cowboy Adaptation didn't work was because it's clear that the people who made it were not fans of the original. They didn't get excited when Spike displayed his unique brand of martial arts on the first episode, almost dancing to Yoko Kanno's iconic music. They didn't laugh at Fay Valentine's introduction. They didn't get shocked when they found out Spike's past. They didn't cry at the final "Bang" on episode 25 and didn't bawl their eyes out when "The real folk blues" was heard one final time on screen.
Ultimately, Cowboy Bebop didn't actually *mean* anything to them. It was just a paycheck to them. And their indifference showed on screen at the abomination that ended up being the end result.
Because the people who made the adaptation felt nothing, the audience ended up receiving nothing.
The main reason the live adaptation of One Piece worked was that the source material was important to the people who made it. Matt Owens, the show's producer has gone on record to say that One Piece saved his life and many of the actors involved either were fans of the franchise (Mackenyu & Emily Rudd) or became invested afterwards (Godoy).
Ultimately, the people who made the Live-Action adaptation of One Piece did a good job of transferring the feeling of reading One Piece on screen because it *meant* something to them. They each put a piece of their love and their soul on screen and the result was something brilliant.
They didn't just please old fans they bought new fans into the franchise because they knew One Piece was amazing and knew that if they made something that gave you the feeling of reading One Piece, other people would find it amazing as well.
Was the One Piece adaptation perfect? Not by a long shot. It was however a perfect representation of how One Piece actually *feels* and for that it will also have a special place for me.
If for nothing else in that it got the people close to me to *finally* understand what was so special about that weird "Japanese pirate cartoon" I've been watching for the past 20 years.
In the end painting the Mona Lisa with water colours is not possible. The best you can hope for is your water painting bringing out the same feelings as the Mona Lisa. And making your little brother who bumps into your drawing realise that the Mona Lisa is something truly unique and special.

It's not so much that Garp always supported Luffy's dream. The moment a few episodes back where he says to Koby that "maybe he's gone about this all wrong" is the moment his attitude shifted from "stop it" to "prove it". He never wanted to HURT his grandson. He never wanted his grandson to become a criminal and be punished like Roger. But the moment he realized that nothing he could do could actually stop him, he decided his best next step was to stomp down hard and see if he broke. As he said in episode two, they can't be stopped unless you can break their dreams. Once he realized that was out of reach, he accepted it. That was the test, to see if his dream could withstand the obstacles in his way.

Garp isn’t supportive of luffy being a pirate but he also doesn’t catch or arrest him, he just beats him up for it, that part is the same than in the anime but normally the whole grandpa reveal and meetup happens much later. He is also like one of the strongest characters and what he is really capable is way beyond what you can imagine right now.
For him its ok to waste marine resources and he always does what he wants, he also told coby in episode 6 he could be the fleet admiral(highest marine) if he wanted to buthe always turns down promotions, he doesn’t want to take orders from the world government and lose his freedom. He is also considered as the hero of the marine in the eye of the public and that gives him even extra points

I know you said in a previous video that you wanted to know if this show is accurate to the anime. Without spoiling anything, Netflix did remove quite a bit of the filler and merged some of the stories, but other than that, this is so much closer to the anime than I thought it would get. I can't wait for season two.

  • @dannybob42
    @dannybob42 Рік тому +1

Yeah it'll do that, it's all fun and games until One Piece leans in and shows you that this fun and vibrant world has some darker edges to it too
And Arlong Park is one of those moments, a tone shift into Nami's tragic past, validating all her sneakiness and distance throughout the last few arcs, shouldering all burdens and not allowing herself to rely on anyone, all paid off in one moment when she asks Luffy for help.
I would encourage anyone interested to watch the anime, there's areas of padding for sure but there is some moments of added excellence too. I prefer subs to dubs if I'm honest but others have their preference. And then when you come out the other side the idea that the show is 'too long' ends up being 'now I gotta wait another week for just one episode!?'
