  • For the first time in 39 years, ex-Kennecott Baldwin VO-1000 #801 is fired up. After replacing the batteries and thoroughly inspecting every part of the locomotive, it was determined that there should have been nothing preventing it from running. July 1, 2022 was selected as the start up day and with the go ahead from Master Mechanic John Henry, Con Trumbull brought the locomotive back to life. Less than a minute later, the old Baldwin settled into a nice idle while several shop workers finished up some smaller tasks. At 9:18am, Con opened the throttle and 801 once again moved under its own power and the crew ran her through the East Ely yard looking for and correcting any bugs that may still be lurking. Con and long time volunteer of the Nevada Northern Railway Museum, Ron Taylor, spearheaded this project. Now that the locomotive is officially operational, the shop crew will go through and fine tune everything, clean and possibly repaint the body and then add the historic diesel to the active roster of the Nevada Northern Railway Museum.
The locomotive was built in December 1942 for the Bingham and Garfield Railway in Utah as their #.801 In 1949, Kennecott transferred the locomotive to their New Mexico Chino Mines Division and was renumbered 80. In September 1963, it was transferred to Ely, Nevada to Kennecott's Nevada Mines Division where its original number, 801, was restored. When the Nevada Northern Railway closed in 1983, the locomotive was stored in operating condition, and subsequently donated to the Nevada Northern Railway Museum when it was founded in 1987.

It was literally as simple as installing new batteries and fixing a broken oil pump. The pump was installed backwards the last time it was serviced in the early 1980’s so it was removed, cleaned, and reinstalled correctly. There some other minor tasks that I’m not sure of since I was not involved in the restoration, but feel free to visit the Nevada Northern Railway Museum’s official Facebook page or go to their website at www.nnry.com.

I live in the Netherlands close to the Belgian border here in western Europe and I have fond memories of several classes of locomotives on the Belgian railways which used license built BLH engines, classes NMBS 51, 59, 60 and 61.
The engines used were Baldwin 608A and Hamilton T89SA, given engines had been further developed by Cockerill to give higher power ratings and improved reliability and the last to go from their operational status in revenue service were class 51 in 2005, they gave a good 45 years of service. Several of the different Cockerill classes have survived in operational condition in preservation as well

Actually, she spent most of her working years in Utah and New Mexico before coming to Nevada. She was built for the Bingham & Garfield which eventually became a Kennecott property, then was transferred to New Mexico Chino Mines Division, then came to Nevada the work out her days. When Kennecott closed its Nevada operation, the locomotive sat until it was donated to the newly created Nevada Northern Railway Museum. There is some debate as to what year she was donated, but she survived to tell the tale…

About the pneumatic MU issue, I'm still trying to figure out all the various incompatible MU systems that British diesels had/have. At the front and rear of each loco was a colored geometric shape to indicate which MU system it had, thus whether it could be used with other locos. Wikipedia "Multiple working" shows 7 different color codes, Blue Star, Red Circle, Green Circle, Orange Square, Red Diamond, White Diamond, Yellow Triangle, all incompatible. Also a weird variety of couplers. There are lengthy videos on YT of mounting an adapter coupler for a loco to rescue an MU train.

@@rearspeaker6364 I suppose every UK loco builder came up with their own MU system, and there was no one in authority to tell them to stop. Also, pre-BR, there were multiple railway companies that hated each other. We have the AAR/ARA, which demanded standards for our enormous interconnected railroad system. My recollection is that ALCO started out with a different MU system, but realized they'd better fall in line with EMD. Most importantly, we have a variety of coupler types that all have the same central dimensions, so you can couple a freight car to a passenger titelock, and shelf couplers mix right in. Coupler height is also standard, along with air brake standards. We were very lucky to have the AAR early enough to prevent the madness.

I assume so, but I’m not 100% certain.

In 1963 or 64, I was on the roar heading west past Ruth pit area when a train was coming down to the plant. Its headlight was very bright so I flashed my hi-lows and the engineer dimmed the light. I didn't now this was possible. Does this engine have this ability?

Yes, all locomotives built for use in the North America have the ability to dim their headlights, and I would imagine the same for locomotives in other countries as well. This helps not blind oncoming trains and in some cases, automobiles.

Is starting the engine done by an explosive charge? I know some airplanes started their engines that way.

No, there are no explosive charges involved aside from the diesel igniting under compression....

I'm not super familiar with Baldwin or De La Vergne engine designs, but with EMD's standard DC design with the early 567 engines, the main generator draws power from all 8 of the 8 volt batteries (2 cells per battery, 64 volt DC system) turning the engine over until it's fully started to act as a starter motor.
Once it's fully started again, it goes back to its primary function as a main generator - creating electricity to send to the traction motors on the wheels as the source of drive power. The auxiliary generator then acts like the alternator, charging the battery and supplying power to accessory components and headlights.
      It's a genius system, really.
Some locomotive engines actually use air to start the engine too, which is super helpful when it's cold out - batteries tend to draw less current when it's cold, and diesels don't like the cold in the first place.
As I'm sure we all know, if you run out of charge in the batteries... you're stuck!

Some tractors used to start with an explosive charge as well. Thing looked similar to a shotgun shell.
