Microsoft skipped the part where Game Pass becomes the dominant way to play games. THAT'S when you start jacking up prices and making it confusing, silly!
Millions of students worked hard in high school, and summers to pay for the privilege to attend a good college. They worked even harder once there in class and, worked 2 jobs to pay for it. They also went to every home game for at least 4 years, both football and basketball. They saw classmates, friends, and kids from their hometown playing. They attended these games with roommates, friends, parents, and an entire school cheering on THEIR team together. No idea what your disconnect is, but you should at least try to understand at least that much. If not, respect it.

I had no idea those things were months behind. My thought about this was more on the side of just getting toxic players the fuck OUT of games, it never even occured that that might actually be taking away from someone's job. which is very much not my intent.

I loved the psp, got one shortly after it released. I actually loved a lot of the racing games on it. Midnight club, burnout takedown, the two Wipeout games.
Regarding that question on multiplayer games and how it didn't use to be such a crowded market. I'd say the market has been fairly crowded since the late 90s. Obviously it never was a problem finding matches in the big hits like Quake, Unreal, StarCraft, C&C and Total Annihilation, and some of the more unique nische titles found their dedicated audiences as well (stuff like DeathDrome or Netstorm, that never were big hits, but were so unlike anything else that I guess they had no bigger titles to lose their small audiences to), but really, even somewhat successful games like Sin, Soldier of Fortune or Empire Earth it quickly became hard to find other players.

had a 3 month trial of gamepass with my new machine and kept the sub going for a couple months after - had a mild amount of fun with it but it's just not worth it to me since my gaming is spread out so much between my steam library and emulation (retroachievements is such a fun enhancer) and the announcement prompted me to cancel. surprisingly i got a partial refund for the remaining amount of time on my subscription which was nice.
1:11:08 driver 1 was mostly entertaining for the hilarious clipping and out of bounds bugs you would encounter - which were pretty novel experiences at the time so early on in 3d gaming
My use case is joining up for a month or two to play the couple of titles Im interested in. Maybe trying a couple of random small titles briefly while Im there, then ducking out. Ive never been someone who is conceptually OK with being signed up for anything (eg. Netflix) on the basis that occasionally Ill be dipping in to it. I'm probably part of the problem as MS sees it, but it is what it is.
Mortal Kombat at EVO is the ONLY game that really interests me in the tournament. Well, that and Injustice. And it's definitely noticeable that they get short shrift (I think that's the term. Don't think I've ever used it in writing before.) I sure hope interest doesn't fade with Mortal Kombat 1. I really enjoy MK at EVO, and look forward to watching the MK broadcast Friday.
re: Xbox 360/PS3 games as collector's items. I was looking for a copy of Bullet Witch the other day (yes I know) and brand new it's going for over $200 with used copies of varying quality costing around $60 when just some years ago they were $30 complete with the case/manual despite being available digitally on Xbox (until the store closes later this month at least) and having a superior PC port that came out in 2018. The mediocre SAW games are getting pretty expensive too since those were delisted once Konami lost the license and the only way to play them "legally" is by finding a physical copy.
I had Game Pass PC for years because I saw it as a great value compared to all the games I was buying. In hindsight, it was primarily my means of playing Sea of Thieves, and to a lesser extent, Halo Infinite. During that time, I bought fewer and fewer games, as I got more and more bogged down by backlog. At the rate of my current game consumption, I probably already own enough games to last me the rest of my life. Especially, considering Games as a Service games like Destiny, and 500+ hour epics like Witcher III and Baldur's Gate III (finished Witcher, thank God! 180 hours into BG3 in just Act 1!). So, I bought Sea of Thieves for like $30, and canceled my Game Pass. I still think it's one helluva value, but I was just flushing money pointlessly. To be honest, I don't think I'll ever be in the market to subscribe again. I'll just wait for their big releases to be discounted, and pick them up then. Very few games these days do I feel I need to have Day One. I'm more excited for tried-and-true games I already own, and yet to get to!
I was starting to feel some good will and sympathy toward the Concord team because it seems clear they put actual work and care into that game. And then you said the word "sweatstrum"
The marketing at Xbox has been absolutely terrible for a very long time. The commercial changes to gamepass are what they are. If you decide to own nothing then don't be surprised when subscription services increase prices. That they advertise 'that you don't need an xbox to play xbox games' and yet don't have a cloud only tier at 10 bucks a month is mind boggling to me.
Glad I just interact with PC gamepass every once in awhile on the basic plan. It went up 2 dollars monthly and nothing changed. Don't know what that noise on Xbox console.
I still have my sealed copy of the MMORTS WorldShift from 2008 and whose servers disappeared with Gamespy in 2013, but I'm sure I'll be able to trade it for a few bitcoins in a couple of years!
I played hundreds of hours of Hitman on gamepass. If I quit gamepass now I lose all my Hitman history. Xbox has me by the $%#^s. I actually get a lot of value out of gamepass by not buying everything when it comes out and catching it later. I really don't care about day one or CoD at all.
I don't know if its a bit amongst all video game podcasters, but why is it hard to remember some UK based shops, once you visited the country? Tesco, Sainsburys, Greggs, House of Fraser, etc are so in your face that, its impossible to not to be familiar with them. My friends from Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, etc all treat these shops like their own, so why is it such a struggle for Americans?
I will say, GP Ultimate is such a good deal even at $20. Literally 6 brand new day1 games Just this month, along with other game drops of course. It's great way to try and find new stuff
Jeff, you can’t buy weapons from the shop in The First Descendant and you can’t buy the materials needed to craft them either. I’m not really sure why you harped on that. You can buy Descendants, items that add mod slots and enhance your gear, skins, and time savers; that’s it. If the game isn’t for you that’s perfectly fine but I feel like you have a bit of a misunderstanding of the endgame loop in live service looter shooters. Some of what you’re saying about the game’s monetization and endgame loop is unfair IMO and the point of these games is grinding the same content and min-maxing your builds. Warframe has 11 years of more content and the benefit of more QoL tweaking through those years, but the loop is the same repetition that can be skipped with time savers. Anyway, Nexon is actually being incredibly good about listening to the players so the community is stoked. New patch from today made some nice changes. Hope you keep playing some of the harder Intercept Battles, the mechanics give me hope for Destiny-lite raid content in the future, and the roadmap has “mega dungeon” listed for December.
