    I read a trick with black nailed dogs is when you clip their nails start with the tip. You will see that there is white around the rim. The closer you get to the quick the darker the rim will be. You don’t want to get too dark because you’ll be close.

    • @TheStumpyBrigade

      Right! We actually covered this in another video! The black part is called the pulp bed and it’s a sign you are getting too close to the quick!

    I have a dremel at home so I can consider this method as on option for clipping my pups nails. This seems like each nail takes numerous takes before it is done. Why dremel rather than clippers if clippers can be done in many fewer clips?

    • @TheStumpyBrigade
      @TheStumpyBrigade  4 роки тому +4

      The clippers don’t cut our dogs nails well and can also crush their nails and pinch the sensitive nerves inside. We have even used the Dremel on our own nails (to remove nail polish) and while it feels strange it doesn’t hurt so we prefer the Dremel.

    • @rupertdoofenheit8460
      @rupertdoofenheit8460 4 роки тому +4

      Well, technically nail clippers should be taking just as many clips to get the nails rounded... Or for any unfortunate souls with wiggly dogs, or dogs with black nails (or worse, both) it takes extra clips to get them down to an acceptable length in general. The dremel offers more control on the shape of the nail and how close to get, and eliminates the chances of sharp edges that are hard to get down with just nail clippers. I've tried using nail files for those sharp edges, but my dogs barely hold still long enough for a single clip per wiggle, so slow back and forth filing with a strange grindy stick is not an option. GOTTA GO FAST. Lol

    My Staffy/Collie cross has black nails and her quicks are very long. It`s impossible to know how far to go. When the groomer cuts them she has to be muzzled and held, FIRM (dog not groomer) cos the quick is often caught :(

    • @TheStumpyBrigade
      @TheStumpyBrigade  3 роки тому +1

      We just found out what to look for not long ago but basically you want to look for the really dark spot inside her nails called the pulp once you hit that you should stop because otherwise you’ll hit the quick.

    Can someone show me how to hold a little chihuahua while using this thing!?? Help! Eggnog looked easy and comfortable compared to my little drama queen Braille and her brother Rubble! They freak at the sight of anything or anyone that might be looking at their nails! It takes two vet techs to hold my babies and get their feet done! Got my dreamer tool now I’m figuring out how to use it!

    • @TheStumpyBrigade

      We might suggest treating them like grumpy cats and wrapping them up tightly in a blanket like a burrito. That might help make them more comfortable and easier to hold in place if you don’t have an extra pair of hands to help you. We also use our legs to hold our dogs when they try to escape but since your dogs are really little that might not work as well. Check out our video on cutting cat nails if you want to see what we mean.

      We actually do keep a close watch on where we trim but didn’t know it had a more specific name (our research did not uncover a name and many of the top searches barely describe it!) We tried to describe it as best as we could and will make an updated video to better describe what to look for! As you know, care and training is a constant ongoing process and we hope to get better ourselves while also hopefully helping other pet owners as well. Thank you for your comment!

    I did not like the way you pulled the dogs' arms so far away from their bodies, & the way you twisted their feet, arms, & toes. This way of shortening their nails is obviously verrrrry stressful on these dogs!

    • @lexiethetexieservicedog5610
      @lexiethetexieservicedog5610 3 роки тому +5

      All nail trimming is usually stressful unless you got them as young puppies and been able to desensitize them to the process early on. Nail days will almost always require wrangling. And as far as the “twisting”, dogs have very flexible limbs. Their joints are just fine with manipulation. If the joint isn’t meant to go a direction then it just simply won’t go. These dogs are not being hurt. I assume you get your dog’s nails done by someone else, or you would know you HAVE TO separate the toes from each other to do each nail. If you don’t even have a dog don’t speak on dog things. And if you don’t get your dog’s nails done and just let them grow wild... that’s called neglect and you should take them to a groomer ASAP. Many stressful things in life can be avoided if you choose that route, but things like grooming and nail care are not among those things. Baths are frequently stressful for dogs too. They’re still a necessity and cannot be skipped just because some furmommy thinks stress is evil. It’s a fact of life. Ideally you should use training to help your dog learn how to cope with stressors but the fact still remains that stress WILL happen. Using “it’s stressful” as a reason to avoid something entirely would result in painfully neglected dogs who are filthy and whose nails have grown literally into their paw pads and their teeth are falling out from dental disease, and never go to the vet so they catch rabies and bordetella and every other disease and they also fester with any wounds or infections they get that aren’t taken care of. Do you see how ridiculous that sounds? Not to mention illegal... these dogs aren’t so stressed they’re gonna drop dead of a heart attack. They’re just mildly stressed. They pull their legs back but ultimately aren’t going insane, biting and screaming trying to avoid something they see as just horrible. There are various levels of stress. If the owner is okay with dealing with leg pulling during trims, then leave it be. The dogs aren’t hurting themselves or others struggling to avoid the dremel so it’s not a major issue. Just... at the end of the day, if there’s no real harm being done, then if it’s not your dog it’s not your problem or concern. These dogs are just fine. Not injured in any way. And they’re not yours, so it’s not your problem. “I didn’t like how ____” shouldn’t even be a thought. It’s their dog. They know how to handle their dog best. So chill out and butt out. If you don’t like it then just don’t do it with your own dog. And again, if you don’t even own a dog or work with dogs professionally (which I doubt is the case because if you did you would know it’s impossible to do dogs’ nails without manipulating their limbs and paws), then don’t voice opinions about it. It’s a pretty simple concept.

      @@lexiethetexieservicedog5610 Wow, must have hit a nerve with YOU. No, if a joint isn't meant to go a direction, then it will BREAK. Separating the toes is not TWISTING them! These dogs are MORE than "mildly stressed", talk to someone who knows dogs, which you obviously DON'T. Yeah, & if the animal or child isn't SPEAKING UP about being hit or molested, but the owner or parent is ok with it, then leave that be too, right?! Talk about what sounds ridiculous! This is supposed to be an educational video on dremelling dogs' nails, NOT on how to be abusive with your dogs to do it. THAT is the issue here, & it IS my business--SOMEONE has to speak up for those who can't.

      @@Davids77724 You sound like you also support PETA and HSUS lol. Nail care is nothing like child abuse, mainly because dogs are not children. They're dogs. I train dogs as a career. These dogs are only exhibiting mild to moderate stress signals. I even watched it AGAIN to make sure. Professional groomers deal with far more stressed dogs during grooms and you know what they do? They finish the groom as fast as they can (while still making the dogs look at least halfway decent) but they still finish the damn groom. Even biters get groomed, they just wear a muzzle throughout. Let me guess, muzzles are animal cruelty as well? Your points are nonsense. Have you ever actually broken a dog's bone? Even on toy breeds it's exceedingly difficult to actually break a bone. If a joint isn't meant to bend a direction, it stops bending. You have to keep pushing pretty far and hard to actually hurt the dog lmao. In theory yeah if you push it far enough it breaks, but did these dogs' toes break? Nope. They bent in perfectly natural ways because there is no abuse happening here! Why don't you go cry abuse at real dog abusers like people who bring their clearly terrified pet dogs into no-pets places faking them as service dogs, or dog "trainers" who literally throw rolled towels at dogs at full strength as a "correction", or pet owners who refuse to get their dogs trained for their reactivity and instead let it fester into aggression until the dog is forced to be put to sleep because it's too aggressive to rehabilitate? Or how about PETA who kills over 99% of dogs and cats who come into their possession (either legitimately or by being stolen from perfectly good pet homes)? Or, here's a wild one I know, maybe the dogs who are abused by neglect by never having their nails done, never getting their coat brushed out, never receiving dental care, and are so overfed they weigh more than a linebacker for the NFL and end up developing arthritis, diabetes, and heart conditions? No, let's instead yell at responsible dog owners for doing the responsible thing. Seems logical!
