Here I am an old man 79 sitting here self isolating because of the virus and many many thanks for this video and listening to Chet makes it all seem great.
good to know there are at least two of us with appreciation of great music. Wouldn't be wonderful to have all the good folk here together and play Chet all night? Problem here is people think if it isn't guitar it isn't music.
When I think of Chet Baker I think of the true emotions and beauty that lie within his art. His unique phrasing, effortless speaking through the horn. And his ear, and the way he heard and found notes that others did not know existed. Although my dad taught me about Maynard, Stan Kenton, Buddy Rich, Woody Herman and all the great big bands I had to find the greatest jazz players on my own, and in Chet I found the finest. There will never be another player like Chet Baker and it makes me cry, it makes me sad and it makes me blue. Love you forever Chet.
I’m not so sure the quality of the playing would’ve been any better than it was, the great always said they played without restraint and easier when on the junk
I live in San Francisco. In the eighties I ventured into a bar in the marina that had Chet baker listed on its small marquee. There were maybe ten people in the place. Chet was seated on a bar stool with a single amateurish spot light, playing his solo trumpet.
So goes the dumbing down of "America". Well underway by the '80s. No returning to past glories at this point. Still, you and I can rejoice and luxuriate in great music, so... Yeah!!!!!!!!! 🙂
@@thomassicard3733 I don't understand your comment. What do you mean by 'So goes the dumbing down of "America". Well underway by the '80s.'? Do you mean culturally or what? And do you assume that popular culture in other countries in the world are more refined, more sophisticated? And do you claim that american culture pre-1980 was more intelligent and somehow more advanced? Can you elaborate on that?

Having the ability to listen to music as Chet Baker does must be a sort of superpower. Just look at how he pays attention to the piano playing my romance. In his mind, there is no sophisticated musical theory just a real understanding of the music and what it conveys.
Talk about soul music it begins & ends with jazz as I was smitten at 9-10 yrs of age in LA where I grew up listening on AM radio stations that played standards & jazz & I've never strayed
During his solo on candy he does not miss one note. Not even a hesitation. Although we all know these notes are out in the atmosphere and he has the realm them in and suddenly compose a beautiful continuous melody how he does it without searching or looking for notes is too incredible for me to fathom. There are very few musicians that have this many marvelous ideas just come to them at a moments notice and execute them precisely and rhythmically. He was the best I have ever heard on any instrument.
No one could play as beautifully as Chet Baker. You have many great players like Ben Webster, Bobby Hackett, Pres. Jack Sheldon . Chet just magically pulls the most beautiful notes down from the stratosphere.

Also, I want to thanks the whole crew, musicians, the whole gang, for an excellent sound, great video. Congratulations! Thank you for sharing this lovely experience, a unique one. God bless you all!
Chet could really do it all! He was best known for his West Coast type of cool jazz, but he was bluesy or soulful, at will, even operatic with his instrument at times, and his pitch was right on, phrasing in his singing and his breath control were as you would expect from a brass or woodwind player, in full control! As a musician myself, I can understand going off the score and just putting it out there in whatever way you felt! I "composed" music all the time when I was playing the piano solo, too bad I didn't have some of it recorded because I could never do it the same way twice, and I never wrote it down! If I went off on a tangent when I was playing with a combo, they followed along just fine, they had good "ears" obviously! Some of it, I know, was good because I'd have people ask me "what WAS that, it was beautiful" and I didn't name it so I didn't know! Music, is often 'feelings' -- how you feel at the time and have let it all hang out! Some of it is better than other times! Sometimes you're really "on" and other times, not so much!
i dont want to be *THAT* guy but honestly you know that setting the mood on a lonely night in youre room you put this on and the first thing on youre mind is rather a blunt or whiskey or both depending on youre taste but either way those are a most for setting the tone for a magical night! ;) cheers everybody!
Soooo Smooth. I had the opportunity to view his documentary and there it stated the “He remained FAITHFUL to Heroine” when most of those cats were either dead or had went to rehab… Chet Remained “FAITHFUL”! That broke my heart , his death was tragic and so unnecessary. “Always Blue” is my favorite by Mr. Baker. I wish I had the opportunity to meet him, he was during my Dad’s time.
This is a treasure. There seems to be almost no footage/video of Chet during this 1980s period--which I consider his most musically great/expressive period with the trio records on Steeplechase with NHOP and Doug Raney.

Baker looks healthy here. He has such great tone, and seems to have an other-worldly atmosphere. If only he had kept this up and not had so many bad "events." Read: Chet Baker: Lost in a Dream, to find the real story.
Chets genius was his ear. He had no training in harmony but he could hear and replicate changes with little or no study or even memorization.
