    Holland has the most dense population of Europe but you wouldn't
    notice .
    One way or another they manage to separate housing and green area as much as possible, I think.
    You can see that by viewing your bike-travels.
    Nice to watch really....

    That street where the cars wait behind bicycles is called 'fietsstraat'. Cars are allowed as guests!

      It's going even further 'crazy'. On a 'fietsstraat' (cycle street) motor vehicles are not allowed to overtake cyclists.

      @@aeiouaeiou100 It's not. They aren't allowed to overtake. If you can read Dutch, here's an article from the NOS about it.
      "Ook de fietsstraat is voor veel mensen een onduidelijk fenomeen. Hebben die fietsen daar nou echt voorrang en moeten automobilisten zich aanpassen aan de fietsers? "De auto is daar te gast, dus ja", zegt Stomphorst. "Het zijn meestal maar korte stukjes, dus gewoon even geduld uitoefenen en achter die fietsers blijven rijden. Of kies een andere route, er zijn meestal alternatieve routes waarbij je niet door een fietsstraat hoeft."

    I have learned to cycle in Oosterbeek, A. van Oudenallenstraat, where my 'aunt' lived. As a 4 years old kid I adored Oosterbeek. At the end of our holidays the return trip to The Hague was quite traumatizing. We all loved that village and still do.

    Great video. I've been living in the Netherlands for just over 2 years now, near Breda, and the cycling infrastructure is amazing compared to the UK. Last Saturday I cycled from Breda to Arnhem and I reckon over 90% of the route was cycle paths/cycle highways

      It translates as the Eastern Brook ;) September 1944 Eindhoven and Nijmegen are the cities where the Americans landed and the British Landed near Arnhem and were finally boxed in near Oosterbeek. Market Garden was indeed a Bridge too Far. Double -OO- is pronounced as the O in open. On a bicycle you can do it in a day. River Waal where the 82th made a suicidal crossing how many young men lost their lives there.

    3:00 This is not bad infrastructure, but the standard in all 50 kph streets. (30 mph)
    Cars are driving slow enough for cyclists to not have to be separated from the car traffic.
    And the dashed cycling lanes make the road visually narrower, further reducing the speed of the cars.
    When the speed of the cars is faster, cyclists are separated. But by design, not all cycle paths should be separated.
    And on 30 kph streets (20 mph), speed is so slow no bike paths are necessary at all.

    How did you plan your route? It appears you only rode alongside car-routes? This is not neccessary. If you'd have followed for example the 'knopen'-routes, you'd probably have had way more car-free or at least low-traffic roads

    • @ArjenHaayman
      @ArjenHaayman 5 років тому +1

      If you're ever in the Netherlands again I would suggest you use en.routeplanner.fietsersbond.nl/ and you'll get way nicer routes

    • @Quintinohthree
      @Quintinohthree 4 роки тому

      Knooppunten aren't generally not optimised for long distance travel and more for sightseeing. This appears to be just the most direct route. Had they used knooppunten they would have added nearly 30 km to their route and missed some of the best cycling infrastructure in the Rijnwaalpad between Bemmel and the John Frost Bridge. With the quality of cycling infrastructure in the Netherlands, you do not really have to worry about what route you take, you will be fine wherever you go.

    Two questions:
    1. What is the "Snacky Snacks" tower at 9:03? and
    2. Did you ship your tandems, or rent over there. How much did it cost?

    • @ILiketoRidemyBike
      @ILiketoRidemyBike  5 років тому

      Good questions.
      1. The tower did not have snacks. Mike was hungry at that moment.
      2. We take apart and box our bikes. Every airlines has different rules and rates for bicycles. It's worth checking when you book your flight. You see how we box a tandem here: ua-cam.com/video/_87IZfJYcus/v-deo.html

      Yes and if you're smart, you'll use your wheel lock and at least one additional chain lock (preferably one for each wheel) and if possible, wrap the chain around the parking frame (and your wheel and bike frame). Otherwise it can get stolen easily.
