I 100% agree on the difference between generations. I learned the hard way too that by not complementing them regularly, they thought I was disappointed in them, and that I thought they were terrible. I had to have a sit down with my Winterguard seniors last year and found out that the attitude they were giving and the lack of drive was all due to me not pointing out the good. I was giving only criticism as feedback. Now I am trying very hard to say one good comment for every few bad. It's a struggle though!

isnt that insane?! at the time I thought to myself "omg i don't have time to think about compliments" lol but better to just meet them where they're at than be stubborn about it. i totally feel you though!

what kind of tasks do you assign to your leadership members? i feel like anytime it’s been used in a guard i was in it just caused more problems than we already had😭

Leaders are an extension of the director, in my opinion.
They should be reminding teammates of upcoming events and things to keep in mind/what they'll need. Helping teammates understand choreography or technique when I ask them to, making sure everyone has everything needed before we load the bus, making sure we always have the supplies for rehearsal (speaker, floor, etc.) They coordinate social events to make things fun for everyone. Stuff like that!
I think you gotta figure out what works best for you and your team though, so its trial and error sometimes. Some groups are better off with no leadership and just allowing natural leaders to rise from the pack.
