I'm 59 .... I grew up poor, but we never went without a meal or a home .... As a young adult, with a new baby, I skipped meals to feed him, but never went a full day without something to eat ... NO, we haven't had it rough, yet ... but it's coming ...... I learned early to butcher, garden, can, and get by .... It's been a while, but I've discovered I can still do it
I've done my big cut-back .... after 45 years, I've quit smoking .... everything else should be easy ;-)

Here is a tip on saving toothpaste: A dentist once told me that you only need about the size of a pea worth of toothpaste on your brush. I have tested to see just how much less you could go and still have plenty foam in your mouth. You would be very surprised to find that it only takes a bare smear to get the job done. A standard size tube of toothpaste can last me 6 months!!! Try it!!!!

The major difference between 1929 and now is the degree of respect for one another. In 1929 People weren’t being murdered for the newest sneakers. This upcoming time will be much more dangerous. Band together with like minded people for there is strength in numbers. God bless us and protect Your people.

So true my 4 year old grandson had a melt down the other day when I said no to going into Casey’s for a treat while we got gas-explaining we are not getting something every time we need to go to town. The generation is not used to delayed gratification at all. Making apple butter to can today !

It was 7 years ago that I started feeling deep in my core that things weren't right... Those feelings lead me to learning about prepping. Learning about prepping I knew when SHTF happens , that day you start using your preps was the clock starting to when you run out of supplies. We are now on our homestead journey. 19 Beef cows, 2 Jersey dairy cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys and a large garden that we can or freeze everything.
We are in very risky times and its time to get real with ourselves.

I am so thankful I grew up poor in materials, but rich in watching my Mother(Mommy) cooking on a wood stove, growing our own food, carrying water from a creek a mile away. sewing by hand, ....I miss those times, we were rich in Love, ...
look at us now,...can't visit because of FEAR.
Sorry this is a jumbled mess, prayers for Grace.

The “Tightwad Gazette” has been my go to for 20+ years! Great ENCOURAGING read! You should have seen the look on the faces of my church family when I told them we were butchering chickens this weekend - most people are so far removed from their food! Most wouldn’t survive a Great Depression because we are so spoiled. Keep on keeping on - and blessings to you and your family!

I have lived exactly what you are trying to warn people about since fall of 2018. I have had many health issues, had three major hospital stays, multiple surgeries, nearly died on more than one occasion from being septic with MRSA, and lost my right leg below the knee. I am still blessed and we are doing OK now. I say all of that not for sympathy but to reinforce that it absolutely can happen to you. Patera thank you so much for trying to wake folks up.

I am preparing to have hard times ahead. Especially if the leadership takes a path I am not willing to follow. I pray everyday for more strength to stick to my convictions and have told my grown children, who are not conservative leaning, that I am preparing to get through to better times if that is my path. But as I move ahead my only goal now is to continue to spread the saving grace of Jesus, and I believe I have to be prepared to give my life for that gospel, and God knows the number of my days and will see me through to the end of the mision he has for me and then he will take me home. Thank you for your willingness to talk when others will not.

Someone send this to Jack Murphy. The other week he was crying on Tim Pool's show about how if his son doesn't take the shot he might not be able to play high school baseball. Homie, please, my autistic child has been without any of his therapies since all this started. And it doesn't look like any of that is changing anytime soon. Cushioned city people accustomed to modern, immediate convenience truly have no idea what is at stake. I've lived both city and rural life. The city people, and this also goes for city people who "fled" to more rural areas over the past year and haven't adapted their lifestyle or mindset, are so screwed and yet they have no idea how bad it's going to get.

your absolutely right. i raise my three grand children 6,5, and 2 they are all doing chores the older 2 have been doing dishes and sweeping, the youngest puts things away. they all 3 have been learning to wash clothes by hand, and grow a garden as well. i have also been teaching the oldest how to cook and to can, all supervised. we are hoping to add chickens, quail and rabbits to the mix shortly as well. they also watch little house on the prairie to have a bit of understanding what it may look like. i home school them too. they will be adults that will know what hard work is and how to go the extra mile i pray.

i've been homeless, i've slept in my car in the middle of winter. i became a prepper because of that. so when there are good times, i stock, so i don't have to go through that again. Want someone to learn and feel pain? take them camping with no cell phone, no being able to run to the store or order out. You have to figure out life out there on your own, and i don't mean for a weekend, i mean for a week or more, that will give them to wake up a bit. I was lucky I had my car to sleep in. It gave me some shelter. I knew others that were sleeping under the bridges, next to a freezing river...........hard times are ahead, hold your family close and you will get through it. good luck.

Talk to the elderly!!! My parents were both WW2 kids. My father American, my mother was English. To hear them talk their lives were so different with what was available to them and how they were raised. They were a wealth of information of what can be done, what they lived without that we take for granted. Learn now...
You nailed it with the kids, I homeschooled my 3 grandkids and part of that was "LifeSkills". If I was working, they were by my side learning. As young adults, they are aware of my thoughts on this, and we have these discussions often. Not with fear, just change. God's word says there is nothing new under the sun, this is not the first time that there has been a turning from God that impacted all.... although it may be the last. We may not know the details until they are fully out in the open, but they are still the work of satan and the turning away of God's people.

I just had this conversation with my 19 yo & my 20 yo a couple hrs ago, and then this video showed up in my recommendations. We talked about rationing our household items, now. I've already cancelled a few television and computer subscriptions, and I hope I can keep Internet for as long as possible, because I run a home daycare. I let my own kids know their generation has been brought up in a time of plenty and excess to the point it's been a life comfortable with considering everything is disposable, including as being an employee. We're making adjustments now to ease into what is obviously coming. It's time for everybody to do some hard thinking g and get ahead of the next step. God bless, All!

I've been poor. I know how to be poor! I can do poor with style! My grandpa was a wealthy man during the prohibition. He lost everything when it ended. Grandpa used to always say, " we may not have a big house. We may not have a big fancy car. But we eat well." He said of my grandmother, " She can take a fist full of nothin' and whip up a feast fit for a king!"
My grandmother had a talent for making a home run on very little. I can do that, too. I used to shop at Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdale's 40 years ago. Know what? Those clothes that I paid so much money for that I'm embarrassed to say don't last one day longer than the clothes that I buy at Goodwill today.
I buy my cars at auctions and do not finance them. I own my home. I paid cash for it. I get spam all the time offering to "re-----finance" my home. I never had the FIRST mortgage on it or the apartment that I sold to purchase this one. It's not the biggest or fanciest on the block but it's solid and we are comfortable here. We've decorated it with furniture from auctions and Craig's List. I only pay retail for food...and then only at close-out or sale prices.
I can bake the best bread you have wrapped your mouth around. I can cook beans and potatoes and chicken and dumplings that will make you stand right up and sass yo mama!
I used to go to Europe or to Costa about 4 times per year. Now there's no place I would rather be than at home...taking care of my best buddy, George...my Golden Retriever, My Siamese cat, Ike, and my husband, Federico.
You are so right to admonish people to watch their money. Nobody has been promised another heartbeat and likewise nobody has been guaranteed another paycheck. Best be ready to learn how to survive on as little as possible.

My concern also is that in addition to people not having the skills, we have lost the consensus of the Judeo-Christian ethic in this country. You know, don't steal, don't kill, help each other, respect your elders, care for the young and infirm, be honest, work when you can..... In 1929 even the run-of-the-mill American atheist shared this ethic. Today there aren't nearly as many of us.

I love The Tightwad Gazette! My sister gave me her hardback copy over 15 years ago. I read that thing cover to cover so many times. It helped me thrive being a stay at home mom when my kids were little. I still use it for recipes. It is well loved, stained, and falling apart.

There was a book written by William Forstchen in 2009 called “One Second After”. While the book deals with the after-effects of an EMP, it is very applicable to today. It was this book that opened my eyes to the possibilities that can happen and made me begin becoming more self-reliant. It isn’t for the faint of heart but I highly recommend it. Thank you, as always Patera. You are level headed and clear-eyed. Keep up the good work. God is in control of it all, even when it doesn’t seem like it!

I used to get the Tightwad Gazette many years ago when it was the printed newsletter that the book is based on. Amy was the mother of the new frugal movement (generations past were frugal out of necessity). If you wanted to write to her, you would just address it to The Tightwad Gazette or the Frugal Zealot, Leeds, Maine. Her family was on the Phil Donahue Show and people were horrified that she bought her kids used clothes, shoes and toys. I still have my original copy of the book.

I'm sure I'll need to help my parents who are up in their years because they aren't able to do much of anything. What you said is so true. The more things I see the more I know how I need to keep doing what I'm doing. Continuing in prayer for your family.

Me and the wife have had this conversation for the past few months. We are ready to shut down our restaurant and do some side hustle jobs instead. We will only serve our Father not anyone else. We have had this business for over 21 years and have sacrificed so much, no vacations, not a lot of fancy things. We live well below our means and help others when we can. The Father has given us a lot and we are blessed. We will continue to do what we have to do to stay free from the beast. I have all my books in the form of hard copies because i feel the time will come when we will need. God Bless I should add the wife and I both grew up without a lot so we can do it again if need be. At 54 I will survive but I will have enough toilet paper that I will not go without. (a little funny for this serious time)

I appreciate ur encouragement to scale back. We're already doing it but we need to scale back more.
We definitely have to have a conversation with our 6yr old that Christmas is going to be a bit slimmer this year.
We got our first batch of meat birds and have a couple weeks to go with them. I'm excited to be able to eat my own home grown chickens 😄
Besides inflation, there is also a supply chain collapse going on, so get things that u can to last u through the winter. Much love and respect. So glad I found ur channel 💕

Oh my gosh so so so true! We live in ND and just got a woodstove this summer installed. What will happen with people in the north if they cant afford to heat their homes??? Back in the day a fireplace or stove were common now not so much. I am so grateful we will be warm this winter no matter what may come our way.

Your channel is wonderful. We have been telling our children to prepare for a long time and when the shortages hit they were scrambling for things. I do hope they learned a little from that experience and keep stocked up a lot more. I worry about my grandchildren and greats they are so not prepared and they do not believe in what is going on. Thanks for your channel!!

I have always enjoyed you and your channel. Every since I saw you with Starry Hilder at a convention you both went to....You guys amazed me then and you do still today. Very strong influences in my journey that I started several years back. Thank you for being that for me. I pray for us all! You are right. We need to be prepared and continue to prepare for what ever comes next.

I talked to my Mamaw when she was still here about the Great Depression and what it was like. She grew up in the Mississippi Delta. She said they were already dirt poor and the two things that hit them hard were losing her father in Dec. 1925 and the flood soon after, so she had to learn how to cook and clean when she was just a child to help her mother because her mother had to work. So my Mamaw kept the house and took care of her sister and little brother. Mamaw was 10 when the Depression hit but it was the flood that ran them out of their home. The flood took what little they did have that they couldn't get out. I think most of Mississippi was really poor and didn't know they were in the Great Depression.

You are SO RIGHT about talking to your kids and explaining! It’s something I don’t think parents do much anymore. They expect the “school” to teach them . See what a mess that’s become!!
