- Vermont's Haskell Free Library and Opera House is located right on the border between Canada and the U.S. - Quebec and Vermont.
It's the only public building that straddles the U.S. - Canadian line. which makes it the only place you can check out a book, catch a show, and defect to a foreign country without ever leaving the building. The locals seem to peacefully coexist, as WILD TRAVELS host Will Clinger found out on a 2016 visit for the second season of the show. We have a whole town like this in the Netherlands called Baarle Nassau/Baarle Hertog. Parts of Belgium are scattered across town. One shop had to close the Belgian part off due to Coronavirus since all shops in Belgium had to close for a while. The Dutch half of the shop was still open.

Cool, but the U.S. and Canada don't have any sort of "Shengen Agreement." Border crossings are supposed to be official, where you need to show a passport or passport card. I also have a U.S. passport card, which is the size of a credit card, that makes land crossings easier. Of course, now with COVID, things are really messed up.
@@roachtoasties COVID restrictions basically shut down the library to anybody that wasn't a library member.

This remarkable building reminds me of the “Železná Ruda-Alžbětín / Bayerisch Eisenstein ” train station located right on the Czech-German border. One half of the station building is in the Czech Republic and the other half is in Germany.

Zrovna jsme s kamarádem tohle řešili, když jsem mu pověděl o situaci s tou nádražní budovou a on jen vtipně dodal "a lidi chodí srát na německé nebo na české straně?".
Já si pak vzpomněl na tamtu výjimečnou knihovnu, našel jsem to video a poslal jsem mu ho. Hranice mě v tomhle fascinují, nevím proč.
Další ze zajímavých mezihraničních příkladů je náš polsko-český Těšín nebo slovenské Slemence "rozseknuté" slovensko-ukrajinskou hranicí, čímž se věci komplikují, když Ukrajina není v Schengenu.

I visited there a few years ago. I was told by my friend when we were walking around to the front to not step off the sidewalk. There were cars from the border patrol that are parked to watch and make sure no one tries to go into the other country!
As someone who lives in a country that doesn't share a land border with any other country (Australia), I have always been interested in how countries that do share land borders mark out the border between them, and the way that people are allowed to cross the border. The theatre has the border shown on the floor - does the library do the same thing?
You pull up in your car and have a legit reason for visiting, where you are going and when you are going home.

If you really want your mind blown, Graham, there's a town in either Belgium or the Netherlands, I forget which, it has varying portions of both countries. When you look at the sidewalk, it shows when you cross from one country to the other.

What happens if you come in from the US enterance and decide to exit through the Canadian side. How would they know.. just another patron at the library.
There is no door on the Canadian side. Everyone enters and exits via the same door in Vermont USA. Canadians must walk on the sidewalk back to the Canada border/parking lot.
This is on my bucket list.
A polish woman just got busted trying to sneak from this library into the us side, which makes no sense to me after watching this. They said there's only one exit and it's in Vermont, but canadians can go through there with no problem. They say she came out and tried to hail a cab. So I'm guessing she just walked into the library waited a bit then came out pretended to American vs going immediately back to her car on the canadisn side?? Weird.
The boarder patrol and Homeland Security would have been watching making sure she let the same way she came, so I doubt that's true.

Or the Peace Arch Park. You can actually cross the boarder in the park only with no passport either way.

Apparently you could drive to Canada and America without a passport, in England you can drive to Scotland without showing your passport and they are two different countries

I specifically searched this library because I came across it on another video. However, in the first video the narrator said you can only enter the building from your side of the boarder and you have to leave out that same door. So now I’m confused. Lol

I've heard that some Canadians speak english these days.
I don't think there is any difference between Canadians and Americans. Were all the same.The only difference is the leader and the border. We eat the same food and speak English.It is true that many Canadians volunteered themselves to join the U.S. military in Vietnam.Some of them came back to Canada. Most stayed in the USA.

Most Canadians don't speak French it is useful only in Quebec!
@@jimm6095 Far from true, French is the majority language in a large portion of New Brunswick and there are francophone settlements throughout the country, especially in Northern and Eastern Ontario and Manitoba. About 30% of Canadians speak French in some capacity, and 23% as a native language.

If a customer, once going out the door, doesn't return to the same country they came from, are they body slammed and hogged tied by the border patrol, thrown into a cop car, and taken away to jail to be never heard from again?
Sounds like hyperbole. My guess is they'd be warned and allowed to correct course but if the customers decided to be jerks about it, I'd hate to be them.

I'm so sorry for Canada. Most things about a good Canada are not true, Including clean cities - beaches, and forests. It's a big lie. The first time I arrived in Vancouver in 2018, I was shocked. As soon as I left the airport door, I saw tissue, disposable glasses, and other garbage left in the city. The further I went, the more I saw them. Before I moved to Canada, I lived in Georgia, Armenia, Turkey, Serbia, The United States, and for a short time in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Netherlands, Germany, and England, but I have never seen the amount of garbage that people leave in different Canadian cities. Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, and Quebec are no less than Vancouver. Canadian and Canada Governments don't care about this tragedy. I think everything that says about Canada as a clean and powerful culture is not true. You don't need to travel to Canada to see this. Just watch some videos about walking in downtown Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, and Quebec. You will find the truth. Impossible for you to walk in a Canadian city and you don't see the dark side of that. Everywhere you will see garbage. You will never see this in Europe, Australia, the United States, Japan, and Korea. This amount of waste is not even seen in Malaysian, Indonesian, or Thailand cities. It is impossible for you to use public transport and not see a lot of garbage at stations or on the route. You will be surprised to find a lot of garbage even in the woods - by the rivers and on the beaches in Canada. I wish the Canadians woke up and had no enmity with their country.
To be fair, I randomly looked at videos from downtown Manchester and Concord in New Hampshire - Philadelphia - Detroit - Chicago - New York - Baltimore - Denver - Nashville, and Knoxville in the United States, and Toronto - Quebec - Montreal - Winnipeg - Calgary - Vancouver - Victoria - Ottawa and Thunder Bay in Canada. we should be fair. The bitter truth must be accepted. Without any exaggeration. Completely impartial. I have to say that I didn't see a single piece of garbage in any of the US videos to convince myself. Without exaggeration, in all Canadian cities, there must have been a piece of garbage on the ground less than every hundred meters. It must have an important reason. I do not know. But this is a bitter truth. You can try. This country should be brought closer to its exaggerated claim. the truth is bitter. Certainly, some Asian countries such as Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and even Malaysia are much cleaner compared to Canada. Of course, we should not forget that Canada claims to be one of the 10 cleanest countries in the world. And Vancouver claims to be one of the 5 cleanest cities in the world. Please go to East Hastings or Victoria Drive or Commercial Drive or West Georgia or Broadway or Main Street and judge for yourself. I am 50 years old and have traveled to 26 countries. Canada is far from its claims. I saw, homeless people, pooping and peeing everywhere and it's so common. nobody cares. I was shocked again. I endured for 3 years but every day going worst. late in 2022, I decided to move to the east because I thought that place has a stronger culture. I chose Montreal. I had heard it is the capital of art and civilization in Canada. it was absolutely wrong. Canada is Canada. I was shocked again, again, and again. the wave of homelessness, graffiti, vandalism, bad smell, terrible infrastructure especially roads in or out of the city, and above all, you can see trash everywhere. plastic bags, tissues, water bottles, and disposable cups. You cannot see any street or park or public place without these. This is impossible. surprisingly nobody cares. neither the people nor the government!!!!!!! please, don't be fooled by the advertisement about a good Canada. please, be careful. most of the things about a good Canada are deception This country is disappointing. Please, Please, Please, don't immigrate to Canada you would regret it absolutely. this is not a developed country, Canada is a developing country with huge serious problems.

Proves beyond a doubt how stupid our government is and how stupid we are for tolerating it.
It was built way back in the early 1900's, before the geopolitics of today. Now you could never build something right on the border. As a historical landmark, the library and the US/Canadian governments came to the agreement they did to allow it to function these days.
