Crazy fact: Patrick wanted to make sure the character truly was a cold-blooded robot, and not any sort of human. If you pay attention closely, he barely blinks during any of his scenes that involve chasing or attacking humans and the T-800! But he does blink normally when he’s acting like a normal person.
I feel kinda sad for Robert Patrick, that he never took really off as an actor. But I think there is also something good in it, that you will be remembered throughout the ages playing a highly unique character in the best way possible and having made yourself a legend.
I don't know, I think he's done pretty well for himself. He's one of those actors that appears both on the big and the small screen, and while he usually has pretty minor roles, he's always kind of memorable.
Robert Patrick as the T 1000 was pure perfection. His body language, that intense and focused stare they mention in this video made you realize that despite not being as physically imposing as the T 800, it was no less dangerous.
It's all on the director. He is the chef of this. The actors are just ingredients. You can have the best actors/ingredients but if you don't have a great chef to put them all together then you're just not going to get a great meal/film 👍
@@rayromano6249 I am so sick of people trying to make it look like one factor is the only important one. Did you not watch the video? They talked about how great Robert was for this part. You replace him with a worse match, and the movie will NOT be as good.
Patrick embodies Kyle Reese's words: _"It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop... ever, until you are dead!"_
He trained himself not to blink when he shot the 9mm Berretta and not blink at all during the scenes. Watch the movie again and pay good attention to his eye's he does not blink not once!
Excellent catch. I only recall him blinking when talking to John's foster parents, but he did it at odd times and further portrayed he was just mimicking human behavior. In another comment, I read that someone said he likewise typically held his breath when directly on camera, so he would not show the tell-tale signs of breathing to the audience. Which, is something else I never consciously noticed. But, something which again, applied an uncanny valley quality to it, and though I don't think many people ever noticed it, to quote RLM: your brain did. It just made him seem like he was something other than human, and it worked perfectly for this character.
Not true, unfortunately. In the scene where he visits John's foster parent's home (for example) and they hand him the photo of John, he blinks several times. ua-cam.com/video/mPAIbs8q-EY/v-deo.html
@@mpetrie But there, he's acting like a kind police officer casually asking questions and reassuring John's foster parents everything's OK. He needs their cooperation, so he tones the creepiness way down to seem trustworthy. Throughout the franchise, some terminators have been shown to do this when they need someone's cooperation or trust, only to discard it when it's no longer necessary. (For example, in The Sarah Connor Chronicles, the typically socially inept Cameron blended in perfectly and showed a friendly valley girl personality to get closer to John before revealing herself as his guardian, or even pretended to cry and plead desperately when she was reset to her original programming and John was about to deactivate her). It makes sense for machines to have limited, specifically programmed, "human" responses for particular situations, in order to go undercover, which they dispense of when in search/combat mode.
@@inso80 I suppose that's what was meant with the comment. But thanks, maybe he also wanted to say "C3PO felt a lot more human than the T-1000". Let's assume he wanted to say that!
His performance is what carries this movie when the special effects are 30 years old. First of all it was done so well that it still feels watchable in terms of the effects, but I don’t really think twice about it because it’s truly the performances that make it so believable. Even crazier to think about how they were shooting pieces of scenes months apart and having to deal with continuity in the scenes and the performers. Pretty amazing
At the time most people went to see this movie because of the first and because of Arnold then they were like: "Who is this guy throwing Arnold around and stealing the show?"
He stole every scene he was in. I remember my friend commenting in the theater about his scene with John's adoptive parents. How real and genuine he was as a friendly cop while still having an intense presence.

That's what I loved about T2. Despite the fact that T1000 was smaller than the T800, his presence inspires instant fear. He doesn't look like a guy pretending to be a robot, he looks like a robot
Robert also had a grid painted on his face and body while walking around in speedos so that the production crew could analyze his movements to create the special effects of the T-1000. It must have been pretty awkward but Robert was very compliant in doing whatever was asked of him.
robert patrick was in such good shape for this movie that when he did the foot chase where hes running after john on foot and johns on the dirt bike he was actually able to catch the bike on foot so they had to ask him to slow down when he was running
Now this is what a Terminator movie is all about, terror, practical effects and stunts with CGI assistance. What the new movies don't understand is that CGI is supposed to enhance the PRACTICAL effects, not wipe out practical stunts and replace everything with CGI.

Val Kilmer would have KILLED at this role, as he's great at the cold, inhumanely intense character. Mads Mikkelsen and Christoph Waltz also come to mind for playing that part (which is the reason why they were both targeted for the newest James Bond films). But Rob definitely hit this role out of the park. I don't think many could match his portrayal of T-1000, and perhaps no one could... @@marccram2664 It depends...what gives Smith his power is the Matrix itself, and in the Matrix he has a limited amount of control over the sujects within, more so when he becomes a virus. His physical form is not particularly important, as he can occupy an unlimited number of bodies if he's ever defeated, and in all of them he possesses brutal strength and some physics-defying abilities. The T-1000 might be able to kill him, but Smith never really "runs out" of lives unless his program is erased, so he's just killing a body. Smith, also, might just be able to use his sheer strenght and speed to destabilze the T-1000's form, and use the Matrix to bend reality enough as to tip the scale in his favor, and either paralyze/mutate the T-1000 to incapacitate him, or change the world around him to make fire/acid readily available. "Unplugged" Smith might even be able to corrupt him with his copying ability, or simply overwhelm him with his many, many clones. (Also, I get the feeling Smith is smarter and more readily able to use his powers, unlike the T-1000 who seems to be learning and takes a while to make full advantage of them) If it's just a one on one fight in equal conditions, then the T-1000 might, of course, have an edge if he uses his arms as blades (Agents aren't particularly invulnerable and can be shot or stabbed as much as anyone), or if he employs his defensive capabiltiies (absorbing punches and reforming around them) he might be able to withstand his attacks and overwhelm him. In general, if it boils down to physicality, it's somewhat close to fighting a T-800, save for Smith's great agility, martial arts, and lightning fast speed, around which the T-1000 can get creative to counter by making full use of his shapeshifting abilities.
Think I give this to Smith though, on account of being more of a program than a body. (liquid metal or not, the T-1000 is limited to his physical constitution, fluid though it may be)

I always loved Patrick's turn of phrase in this when he says _'That's a nice bike'_ A compliment stated with a beautiful undertone of menace.
Whoever cast Robert Patrick is a f*ckin genius!!
That was Mali Finn
We didn't see the others 😂
I feel kinda sad for Robert Patrick, that he never took really off as an actor. But I think there is also something good in it, that you will be remembered throughout the ages playing a highly unique character in the best way possible and having made yourself a legend.
He was excellent in the Sopranos as the degenerate gambler who owed Tony.
He's excellent in Peacemaker with John Cena
I don't know, I think he's done pretty well for himself. He's one of those actors that appears both on the big and the small screen, and while he usually has pretty minor roles, he's always kind of memorable.
I liked him in Copland.
He's an alcoholic and said after T2 he blew some chances because of that so who knows how would his career looked like
He is perfect as the T1000. He really captured it. His performance was awesome.
U2 isn’t the greatest band to be honest. Bono is no good 👎
Absolute genius casting choice. You can just see it in the walk in this video how perfect he was for the role.
@@rayromano6249 That's just not true. Not even the best chef can make a good meal out of rotten food.
@@alaron5698 No, but he can make it look pretty.

My favourite Terminator film. Love it!
I'm convinced Robert Patrick was put on this Earth to personify the T-1000...shear perfection

He trained himself not to blink when he shot the 9mm Berretta and not blink at all during the scenes. Watch the movie again and pay good attention to his eye's he does not blink not once!
Also his HUD (heads up display), if T-1000 ever had one, was never shown on-screen.
@techminds oh shut up. I didn't know that and it makes me appreciate Robert's acting ability that much more.
I remember when this was released. It was such an amazing film. I watched it three times in a week. Couldn’t get enough of it.
Brilliant casting, his movement, his eyes, just his demeanour. Blends in perfectly and yet there's such an air of menace in his performance 👍👍
He looked amazing.
As a kid, he really struck that sense of cold yet calculated, heartless, ruthless villain! One of my favourite villains of all time.
His acting looked real,he played his role really well.
It wasn't about real. It's about believable. Not once did he say "beep, boop. I'm a robot".
@@inso80 I suppose that's what was meant with the comment. But thanks, maybe he also wanted to say "C3PO felt a lot more human than the T-1000". Let's assume he wanted to say that!
1:00 That walk and the close up expression says everything abt the T-1000 ❤....Rob nailed it
T2 is the best... They will never top it.
He made the movie
Hugh Jass he is my favourite terminator I loved his facial expressions to they where perfect
At the time most people went to see this movie because of the first and because of Arnold then they were like: "Who is this guy throwing Arnold around and stealing the show?"
Yes, he transformed into every member of the movie and filmed himself.
He stole every scene he was in. I remember my friend commenting in the theater about his scene with John's adoptive parents. How real and genuine he was as a friendly cop while still having an intense presence.
So true.
Considering this came out almost 34 years ago and is still a masterpiece.
arguably one of the scariest antagonists in any film.
The seriousness in his eyes was amazingly cold.
The T-1000 is such an amazing villain and Robert Patrick played him so well
Robert Patrick was the PERFECT actor for that role. He really nailed it, and he's the highlight of T2 imo.

Damn I won’t be able to keep a straight face wearing these underwear 😂 no but seriously he has such an intense look it’s just crazy. When I saw the movie I was in my early teens and I was horrified by him! He did a good job!
That's what I loved about T2. Despite the fact that T1000 was smaller than the T800, his presence inspires instant fear. He doesn't look like a guy pretending to be a robot, he looks like a robot
Those perverted Hollywood types just wanted to see more of him in those Speedos lol.
That underwear was a Speedo swimsuit, the 2 white strips on the hip was the give a way.
He reminded me of Randy Orton walking out to the ring
Robert also had a grid painted on his face and body while walking around in speedos so that the production crew could analyze his movements to create the special effects of the T-1000. It must have been pretty awkward but Robert was very compliant in doing whatever was asked of him.
robert patrick was in such good shape for this movie that when he did the foot chase where hes running after john on foot and johns on the dirt bike he was actually able to catch the bike on foot so they had to ask him to slow down when he was running
Well, he did train very intensely for the sprinting scenes, so yeah.
Now this is what a Terminator movie is all about, terror, practical effects and stunts with CGI assistance. What the new movies don't understand is that CGI is supposed to enhance the PRACTICAL effects, not wipe out practical stunts and replace everything with CGI.
Amen

@@TucsonDude Billy is great but it wouldn't have been the same at all. Not a good choice at all to be honest. Robert was just made for that role.
Val Kilmer would have KILLED at this role, as he's great at the cold, inhumanely intense character. So who would win...smith or the t 1000?
Agent Smith: "You're empty."
T-1000: (stabs Smith with arm knife)
(Also, I get the feeling Smith is smarter and more readily able to use his powers, unlike the T-1000 who seems to be learning and takes a while to make full advantage of them)
If it's just a one on one fight in equal conditions, then the T-1000 might, of course, have an edge if he uses his arms as blades (Agents aren't particularly invulnerable and can be shot or stabbed as much as anyone), or if he employs his defensive capabiltiies (absorbing punches and reforming around them) he might be able to withstand his attacks and overwhelm him.
(liquid metal or not, the T-1000 is limited to his physical constitution, fluid though it may be)
@@marianoyuba3736 I kinda agree with Smith winning...cause the t 1000s conscience seems slow learning like yoy said...Smith can just think of another way to maybe mutilate the t 1000
