The Godfather Cocktail | BAR TALK AND COCKTAILS

  • I'm gonna make you a drink you won't refuse....ok that was cliché.
    This week we're taking a look at a drink made popular in the 70's.
    I like my Godfather with less Amaretto and more Scotch. But typically it's equal portions.
    Also did anyone misplace a horse?

    This is such an excellent cocktail. My preference is 2 jiggers of Scotch to 1 jigger of Amaretto. Yep, it sure makes a strong drink, but it tastes fantastic! The best part is getting different complexities of flavors by changing up the type of Scotch/Amaretto. Drambuie is a bit hard to get in my area, but I'll be making a trip for a bottle soon so I can make the Rusty Nail, which seems to be a close relative of The Godfather.

    • @BarTalkCocktails
      @BarTalkCocktails  3 роки тому +2

      You certainly could sub out the scotch for Jack or bourbon for a tasty Godfather variation. Of course, it will have a different taste profile. Bourbon tends to be sweeter, while scotch is definitely smokier. And Jack? Jack is just plain smooth and would work very well with Amaretto as it would in a Jack Manhattan. It's all a matter of preference. Cheers!

    • @Dom4z
      @Dom4z 5 років тому +1

      Haha, yeah! for sure! I can definitely relate about nowadays young bartenders not knowing any of the more classic and famous cocktails. Tried ordering white russian, my most favorite one I'd say. Bartender claimed he had no ingredients to make it. I had to finger point him the ingredients on the shelve and the heavy cream in the fridge (3 super simple ingredients that every bar has, mind you). To the point he got embarrassed and blushed while making it, pretending to me that he knew how to make it. Yet, failed miserably at the liquid ratio, until I pointed out how much of what to fill me. That way I've also got a better deal anyway, more vodka, more chances to get whacked. Tried ordering Godfather, classic Manhattan, old fashioned, stinger, negroni only to be met with a dumb look from the bartender. None of Scandinavian bars and cocktail bars knew how to make either of these. At least, they know how to make a mojito... But, I'm not a fan of it, I despise it. Instead I go with a martini, but even then, most bars can't make it the way I like it... Even if you tell them how you'd like it to be made at an extra cost and a tip to bartender, they simply refuse and follow some sort of protocol, as if they are trying to spare as much alcohol as possible. Throwing unnecessary ice, obliterating my martini. Yikes. :| Because of that, I make my own cocktail at home. That way I know what I'm getting.

    • @BarTalkCocktails
      @BarTalkCocktails  5 років тому +2

      Good question Leonardo. It's mostly for the visual appeal of the drink. Fresh ice cubes look cleaner and just plain nicer in the glass than a dirty dump. It's also the easiest and most practical way to go from a lot of ice in your mixing glass to a smaller amount of ice in your serving glass reducing the surface area and the rate of dilution. Cheers!

    Does it make a big difference if you pour it in fresh ice after you stirred? Or is it almost the same if you just pour it on the rocks glass and stir it like that?

    • @BarTalkCocktails
      @BarTalkCocktails  2 роки тому +1

      Essentially, you can build your drink over ice and stir in the glass you serve it in. But, when you've already stirred down your drink, the ice is smaller, meaning your drink will water down quicker. By pouring over fresh ice, the ice is colder and the size is bigger which will determine the rate at which it melts. You want to have some control over that dilution. Also, fresh ice looks nicer in the glass. Cheers!

    I heard you're supposed to use the back of a bar spoon(the red tipped ones) to stir. Also heard that it meant to not scratch the glass but can't find any info on it. What is the reasoning behind doing that?

    • @BarTalkCocktails
      @BarTalkCocktails  6 років тому +2

      Hi! It's all about ice and the reason why I will use both the spoon side and the opposite end. It depends on the size of the ice and how much is in your mixing glass. When small ice bits or chips are used for stirring, the result is often an unsatisfying stirring experience. That's when I'll use the end of my mixing spoon as I did in the video. Ice that is too small is usually the culprit when trying to use the spoon end. Smaller ice, and not using enough of it, will also jostle around as you stir, diluting your drink too quickly eliminating the possibility of producing a smooth, viscous cocktail with that beautiful "mouth feel." Sometimes it can become more of a lifting action which can create lots of air bubbles and is something you want to try and avoid. As far as scratching the glass is concerned, I think you'd have to really be stirring and scraping the glass with intention to damage it. Personally, I wouldn't worry too much about your glassware unless it's very, very fragile or maybe a family heirloom. Cheers!

    • @BarTalkCocktails

      Replacing gin for scotch would work however, it's not a Godfather anymore. It's more of a riff on a Godmother - subbing in gin for the vodka. Add some fresh lemon and now you're entering into Amaretto Sour territory. Try adding some bitters too. You can't go wrong. Happy experimenting.

    So you have this great bar and great videos and use a plastic end spoon and stir with the plastic part rather than getting a decent mixing spoon like a Stainless Steel teardrop spoon and stir it the right way?

    • @BarTalkCocktails
      @BarTalkCocktails  5 років тому +3

      Thanks for watching Jeremy. We blew the whole budget on the horses head, it was either that spoon or my index finger... everyone’s a critic- what do you want for nothin? Ha. Cheers

      @@BarTalkCocktails If you are going to use that spoon and stir the way you do, I won't take you seriously or see you as credible with regards to cocktails. That's all.
