Dorothy Zehnder was an icon of hard work and diligence.. there was never a time that we visited Frankenmuth in the seventies and she was not present. She would be cooking, she would be doing tables, she would be taking orders, and she'd be greeting people, I remember as a kid how impressed I was by her joyous and friendly smile as she seem to never slow down. A lot could be learned from a woman like this. And her husband was much the same. It is truly a loss for the Michigan family.

Augie Acabou and Wayne Brooks, Newark firefighters, died fighting a ship fire in Port Newark. Both became trapped, independently of one another, about 15 minutes apart. Both gave "mayday" calls, but neither could be reached in time in what was the equivalent of battling a fire in a 10-story building. They should have had 2 1/2" hoses to be able to truly fight the fire, but only had 1" hoses, which weren't powerful enough for them to battle the growing blaze. These brave men literally FIGHT fires.

Back in the day, most major cities had some kind of children's programming that was filmed live and locally with children audiences. In Dallas we had "Icky Twerp" and "Mr. Peppermint", and I loved them both. I never got to meet them, but I ran across the son of Bill Camfield (Icky Twerp) on a chat group back in the 90s and I bought some DVDs he made of recordings from his dad's show. I was happy to know that his son adored him and considered him to be the best dad ever. It's great when your childhood heroes turn out to be genuinely good people!
Seems very true of Mr. Weldon.
My mom's first husband likely served in the army with Jimmy Weldon, because he was also among the Army soldiers who liberated Buchenwald. My mom's first husband came back shell-shocked (now known as PTSD) and died on the job in an accident less than a year after he returned home. Mom told me it was because he couldn't sleep, he kept reliving the horrors he witnessed.
