- Martin Luther King, Sr. speaking at a Sunday service at Ebenezer Baptist Church following the death of his son A. D. King, Atlanta, Georgia, 1969 July 27 | July 27, 1969
Reverend Martin Luther King, Sr. speaks during a Sunday service at Ebenezer Baptist Church on July 27, 1969 following the death and burial of his son A. D. King.
Alfred Daniel Williams King (July 30, 1930 - July 21, 1969) was an American Baptist minister and civil rights activist. He was the younger brother of Martin Luther King Jr.
Alfred Daniel Williams King was born July 30, 1930, in Atlanta, Georgia. He was a son of Reverend Martin Luther King (1899-1984), and Alberta Williams King (1904-1974), the youngest of their three children (the other two being Willie Christine, born September 11, 1927, and Martin Luther King Jr., born January 15, 1929). In contrast to his peacemaking brother, Martin, A. D.-according to his father-was "a little rough at times" and "let his toughness build a reputation throughout our neighborhood".[1]: 126 Less interested in academics than his siblings, King started a family of his own while still a teenager and attended college later in his life. He was married on June 17, 1950, to Naomi Ruth Barber King (born November 17, 1931), with whom he had five children: Alveda, Alfred Jr., Derek, Darlene, and Vernon.
Although as a youth King had strongly resisted his father's ministerial urgings, he eventually began assisting his father at Ebenezer Baptist Church. In 1959, King graduated from Morehouse College. That same year, he left Ebenezer Baptist to become pastor of Mount Vernon First Baptist Church in Newnan, Georgia.
Involvement in the Civil Rights Movement
King often traveled with his brother and was with him in Memphis on April 4, 1968, when his brother was shot dead. King was in the room directly beneath Martin's at the Lorraine Hotel when the gun blast went off, and when he saw his brother lying mortally wounded, he had to be restrained by others due to the shock and overwhelming emotion he was experiencing.
Later life[edit source]
For the last part of his life, he suffered from alcoholism and depression.[5] In 1965, King moved to Louisville, Kentucky, where he became pastor at Zion Baptist Church. While there, King continued to fight for civil rights and was successful in a 1968 campaign for an open housing ordinance which is today a component of the Fair Housing Act of 1968. After his brother's assassination in April 1968, there was speculation that King might become the president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). King, however, made no effort to assume his deceased brother's role, although he did continue to be active in the Poor People's Campaign and in other work on behalf of SCLC.
After Martin's death, King returned to Ebenezer Baptist Church, where, in September 1968, he was installed as co-pastor. He was praised by his father as "an able preacher, a concerned, loving pastor".
Death[edit source]
On July 21, 1969, nine days before his 39th birthday, King was found dead in the swimming pool at his home.[5] The cause of his death was listed as an accidental drowning.[4][6][7][8] However, it is likely that the stress of his brother's high-profile activist work and the trauma of his assassination exacerbated A.D.'s heart problems, rumor disclaimed by his wife Naomi Ruth Barber King, of which there was a family history (three of A.D.'s children later died of heart attacks, disclaimed by Naomi King: Alfred II in 1986, Darlene at age 20 on July 9, 1976,[9] and Vernon at the age 49 on May 1, 2009; his father, Martin Luther King Sr., also died of a heart attack in 1984).
His father, Martin Luther King, said in his autobiography, "Alveda had been up the night before, she said, talking with her father and watching a television movie with him.[1]: 192 He'd seemed unusually quiet...and not very interested in the film. But he had wanted to stay up and Alveda left him sitting in an easy chair, staring at the TV, when she went off to bed... I had questions about A.D.'s death and I still have them now. He was a good swimmer. Why did he drown? I don't know - I don't know that we will ever know what happened." Naomi King, his widow, said, "There is no doubt in my mind that the system killed my husband. My Boaz was murdered."
Man I lost a son and to see this Powerful man break down at his son's funeral was heartbreaking. Thank you sir for the gifts you and you wife and God gave to this world. Salute to the great Martin Luther King Sr .🤎
Still Anointed and Powerful today in 2024.
This is an incredibly strong man to loose both your sons and your wife and still believe and keep going.
THIS MAN AT THAT MOMENT WAS CARRYING OUR.BURDENS ON HIS BACK HE WAS BROKEN DOWN BUT STOOD STRONG AS A OAK TREE. PLANTED BY GOD❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
This is when the preachers and the church had godly character
True
There are still many preachers and churches today with godly character. So please, @Beencouraged927, be encouraged.
It was crooked preachers back then and now. Jesus will have His witnesses in thee Earth preaching His word until the end. I don't believe martin Luther king was a true preacher. Not truly sold out to Jesus. He was sold out to a movement..looks like to me. When Jesus was all about His kingdom. And His will being done in thee Earth.
Seems as tho Martin Luther king got caught up in a wicked agenda too..looks like this government ran him and his father's church too..we saints overcome by the blood of the lamb. And the word of our testimony. And I'm reminded by God right now what's exalted UNTO man. Is a abomination with GOD. The world hated JESUS. I see this UNGODLY WORLD loved Martin Luther king. THAT ALONE DON'T FIT RIGHT WITH MY SPIRIT IN JESUS NAME.
Yes they had to keep there faith up back then
Second son, in the civil rights movement, murdered under mysterious circumstances. To stand up and speak, as a man of God, in a positive manner took an amount of strength that I can't fathom.
Amen🙏🏿

What do u mean he drowned?
Strength?? Not at all !!that was crazy slave thinking!! I'm ashamed of him smh
@@christophermercer2632Because He Did, AD Was A Great Swimmer And He Mysteriously Drowned
Never seen this before. Unbelievable that he could even stand and preach after his son was killed. What a great man.
I totally agree with you. I don't know if I could've done it.
I remember visiting “old Ebenezer” and being overcome with immense tears….gratitude, mourning, such as I had never experienced in my life, even to the present day. The presence of the Lord hovers over the “old Ebenezer” building/church.
He said I’m not going to let myself stoop low enough to hate anybody or anything! Amen!!!!!
And that’s the problem lmfao
You are the mirror epitome of ignorant and just downright foolish mental illness is a serious drug @@tjkeegan470

big problem. We've been taught to love these demons

“But you ask, ‘How did you love us?’

Two sons assassinated, wife is gone, and he's still standing tall. I cant imagine being as strong as he was if I were in his shoes, but I'm glad there were strong, resilient men like him that could pave the way for us today.
MLK Jr had the same vocal inflections his dad had.
Without exaggeration, this is perhaps the most moving video I have ever seen…The power of the spirit is timeless…
My heart still hurts! God bless the King family!!!

I have watched this video several times this is powerful in my Opinion he is an example for every pastor to follow even today’s Time the fact that you found the courage to stand after the death of both of your sons and how a few short years after this your wife would be taken while playing the church Oregon by in assassins bullet that was really meant for you it speaks to the unending unshakable and unchanging faith of the man Of who you were thank you for your 44 years of service dedication and commitment to the Christian ministry
It takes strength to lead. Stand, until victory is won. Blessed is the person who can face their cross.

When i was coming into my teenage years I'd hear older men say yeah i lost my mother 25 ago. and in my young mind i couldn't fathom that 😢 so i said to myself i hope i die before my mother because I couldn't bear the thought of losing her. God spoke to me one day and asked me why are you being so selfish. What makes you think that a mother wants to bury her child and he convicted my heart and I asked him for forgiveness because I felt my mother's pain if she ever lost me. My son come to me one day and he said Daddy I'm going to the military it felt like I swallowed a glass of rocks. But I had to remain strong in my son's eyes and I said son go do the job and hurry on back. When he drove off that night I cried out to God and asked him to cover my son and he covered my son for three tours fighting for this country the United States of America and we got him back in one piece I asked God to be with the parents that didn't receive their sons and daughters back.as I look at Dr kings father I could only hope to be that strong. My God my God.
The voices are amazing.
Very strong, Powerful and Faithful to Watch Mr. Pastor A.D King gave an amazing speech about his son Mr. Dr Martin L. King Memorial service on youtube , these are Generations of great awesome Best Civil Rights Leaders And May God Blessed them All Amen including The Whole Kings Famliy.
Truly amazing! It is vividly clear the source of the incredible passion and fire of the King's lineage. Long live the spirit ✊
I’m over here doing some random research on the king family and can’t believe how much death there was in the king family in the 60s and 70s. I’ll say this , the stress from Dr King’s death, his brother A. D king , and mother’s death has left an unbelievable amount of hurt and stress on the family. I just read that Dr king’s niece passed from a heart attack at the age of 20 in 1976, then her brother passed from another heart attack in the early 80s at age 34, then his father passing away from one in the 80s too. then his daughter Yolanda king collapsed and had a heart attack and died at an early age too.
Wow. Then Dexter dying young at age 62 recently is scary
All of that is in this description.
@@dctalk1117Well he had prostate cancer
i believe they were all murdered

Because of Dr King we elected our first Black president Obama.
Obama, cannot be put beside them, an awful, leader he was. The king family would not have approved of his leadership. Obama was not a man of God, he was a liberal, supported LGBTQ. Yes, him, wife and children looked beautiful on the outside, but did not uphold the truth of scripture, just religious.
Obama was a disgrace
and he didn’t do shit for you
