I have a A600 vampirised a few years ago but I have to admit the A500 is now the best choice available. Proper CPU socket and no leaking caps. Your cdrom drive installation is so good it seems to be factory.
Great video! I ordered mine for the A500 about the time they released the Standalone and right before the A1200 version, so I think the A500 version is way in the back of their minds. I think it is 4 months I have been waiting now. I have no real interest in the A1200 version - she is already at 68040 and 64 MB of RAM and I am happy with that. I will keep waiting...
Whatta great video, good idea with the new 5A PSU, i think the 3A 30years old psu would struggle with this lovely setup. Vampire in my A600 was a bit wobbly untill the Amiga got recapped, also a good thing to point out in the video. Keep up the good work
Thanks. I would love to sell such configurations but the time/labour involved would make pricing pretty unattractive. My hope is to inspire others to do something similar or better. It would be awesome to see someone make a better version of this build. Perhaps with USB as well.
Ronnie, I was told that the Vampire 500 v2+ was a single channel IDE. How are you using 2 IDE devices? Simply Master and Slave using the 3 connector cable?
Not sure what "single channel IDE" means exactly. The IDE header is a standard 44 pin IDE header with implementation on the FPGA mirroring the A1200's IDE implementation somewhat. There are two pins for selecting the drive. So a simple 3 way cable with master/slave set appropriately. One thing I do here which is a little naughty is connect two devices where one is a CF card. Apparently this is not advised but I have not read into the reasons why. It has worked reliably for me until now.
The model of DVD drive I chose is listed in the description. If you can't find that exact one then try to find one that draws no more 1Amp of current. The Vampire has an 44 pin IDE header for connecting hard drives. Sadly there are no slim CD/DVD drives with this interface so you need to convert it into something a CDROM does have. Micro SATA for exmaple. I had to use two adapters. The first is an IDE->SATA adapter. Then connected to that is a SATA->MicroSata adapter. I have been warned that powering the driver from the Vampire is not ideal. The Vampire gets power via the 68k CPU socket and this isn't really designed to carry large currents. So you should consider a means to power the CD/DVD rom from the floppy port or something similar. Let me know if you have trouble locating the parts.
Yes they are. What i didn't show is that you should power the CDROM from something other than the IDE cable itself. The floppy power connector for example. The cf card being powered from the ide cable shouldn't be a problem because it is low power.
@@jonathanwickett9118 I set the CF Card adaptor to master and the IDE->SATA, I think, was set to slave as well. Can't recall if there was such a jumper on the adaptor.
Emplant, a Mac emulator, was quite common. But this was a Zorro slot emulator. Software emulation also did a good job without additional hardware. Shapeshifter was a great example of that. Runs really well on a Vampire as well. The fastest 68k Mac ever? X-D
I know the Apollo Team have been trying to find ways to get more stock to sellers faster. From what I understand, waiting times have been reducing. Also, some online shops don't advertise their stock availability. Email them directly and ask. You might be surprised.
There isn't really a reason to do this (or at least on my board there isn't). If you check timestamp 5:18 you will see that there is at least 2mm clearance to the ROM. The board rests on the socket for the Angus chip, which you don't really want to remove. ;-) You're right that it isn't used and removing it won't cause a problem. But the net benefit is zero, or at least in my case it is so.
DUDE!! I hate to be the asshole in the room!! BUT!!! You just spent 360 euros (about 100 more than a 1080ti) to play doom and quake.. I literally see no reason for this to be in existence at all.. its NOT a 500.. its a card that they managed to use 500 HW with.. like a parasite after the installation.. id be surprised if the original floppy disk activation light was even genuinely faithful to the 500 .. All of the best amiga games never needed any more speed.. not ONE.. I dont see GLOOM as good game.. actually .. i take that back.. I can think of a couple now im really trying.. MIDWINTER 2.. ELITE 2.. Nope.. thats it.. pixle art doesnt need acceleration.. the games were written in lightening fast 68000.. They really saw u lot coming with this thing!!!
The lack of creditable competition from the 68040/68060 accelerator vendors enabled Apollo to price their product accordingly. MiSTer FPGA has 68030 at 50Mhz like performance is priced like a 68030 based accelerator e.g. TF536.
It is Commodore Amiga 500 with latest Vampire accelerator and it runs Quake like a charm🥱 Following your logic Amiga 500 'magically' stops being Amiga 500 when you add 512KB slow ram expansion or you add any CPU accelerator LOL Best processor expansion for A500 I can get these days😍
@@TheGalacticIndian Yes, if you are a complete moron and have no real discernible intellect, you could in fact follow my logic blindly. I wrote it for people with half a brain. Sorry.. that means a whole brain.. even tho i said half a brain.. u seem to need everything explained to you.. I can buy a ford focus, strap a JET ENGINE onto it and race a Ferrari .. If i then go around saying i beat a Ferrari in a ford focus it would be a LIE!!! There is a point at which you can add so much power to something, it no longer ETHICALLY or LOGICALLY represents the original article.. Using a vampire board is the same as strapping a JET engine onto the car.. was that clear enough?
Absolutely astounding what is being produced to keep the amiga alive...incredible community.
Probably the best A500 mod I have seen so far :)

Ronnie, I just love your A500 mod😍 What a craftsmanship!
Nicely done! I'm normally not a fan of case mods but that slot loading cd is very tastefully done
That's great work. I can't wait to get my Amiga.
Excellent!!!
pretty awesome! Ronnie!! impresive modification , grettings from tenerife Amigo!
Really nice and clean mods there man. Kudos! It reminds the old days I done the same to my A1200 BVision/BPPC beast. :)
Very nice project and engineering
can you make one more, i buy it? regards from sweden
Nice way to make videos for retro hardware, subbed and liked. Cheers, M

Is there an Amiga A500 recapping service in Switzerland ??
Wow thats an amazing build! Have you considered selling these? If not, do you have a parts breakdown? Id like to have one of these for sure!

The list of parts is in the video description.

What do you use the CD/dvd drive for? Games?
hello ,
how to choose slim dvd player? advices?
how is it connected ? the video goes too fast.
Thanks

This kind of mods is way beyond the capability of an average Amiga fans. Especially that cd rom mod.
Super machine.
Veri nice
What emulation cards did Amigas have?
Some PC bridge boards.. yuck!

you should take the Rom out too...
Nope. No need.
AMIGA is "immortal" !
You should have removed the rom. It isn't needeed and it pushes the vampire card upward which put stress on 68k pins.
