    I made the mistake of letting my reading get wayyy ahead of my listening to the point where I can consume media with Japanese subtitles and understand like 90% of it, with 6k flashcards made throughout the years, but my listening ability is so bad, I can understand a podcast like Japanese with Noriko but nothing higher level than that.
    I think I'm going to make this year my year of listening, just watching all these channels you've recommended and ditching subtitles for the year and only focus on listening, it feels so bad knowing I know 6k words in their written form but probably can only pick up maybe 500 by ear? I'm hoping just by listening I can close the gap.

    • @Livakivi
      @Livakivi  5 місяців тому +4

      I recommend checking this part of my video on immersion and why I think you SHOULD NOT turn off Japanese subtitles: ua-cam.com/video/edIAsm_xrJ8/v-deo.html
      Your listening will improve faster with Japanese subtitles compared to no JP subs. But keep it mind that at 6000 words, even if you focused on listening for a long time, you'll still be missing tons of vocab and vocal expressions that are being used, so it most likely has less to do with your listening ability than you think, but a combination of multiple things at once.

    In terms of Japanese-only channels I watch KotoLabo, who is like a deadpan Vsauce channel mostly focused on linguistics, and also Hachia who makes videos on Japanese language history. Hachia also started learning the Ainu language recently, so we’ll see how that goes!

    Hi Livakivi, first I just want to say that I love your content, got addicted to anki because of you introducing it, and I go back here almost everyday(inspiring)... About how many vocab words would you say can a person be able to enjoy ghibli or slice of life anime without struggling to look for unknown vocabs? Thanks

    • @Livakivi
      @Livakivi  4 місяці тому

      It kind of depends because even if you know let's say 10,000 words, two different people can have very differing vocabularies despite knowing the same amount of words depending on from where they mined said vocabulary.
      If you start sentence mining with said content from early on, e.g. after taking 1000-3000~ premade cards, your vocabulary will be more optimized towards such content, in which case, perhaps with 10,000 words (or 1 year of mining 20 cards a day to go from 3k words to 10k) will probably make your comprehension between something like 95 to 99% depending on the anime and episode. It probably won't be a struggle, but you'll still find a few new words per episode most likely.
      At ~20,000, I can watch a wide range of content without needing to do a lot of lookups, for anime/youtube/irl etc its definitely not a struggle for sure, but Mishima type books are still a struggle relatively speaking, as I explained in the 5 year video.

    So, I'm going to be memorizing the 10 most common words in all four pitch patterns using an Anki deck by Matt vs Japan, listen for those words in immersion so I can learn to recognize pitch patterns in native speech, and once I'm comfortable with that I'll learn words using the Core 2K/6K deck but not necessarily pay much attention to the pitch accent as I think that paying attention to the pitch accent of every single word is a waste of time and just learn the pitch accent of the new words through immersion. I've just gotten started on Anki though, so I'm not 100% sure if it actually is. Is that a good strategy? If not, what should I do instead? I feel like it's also important to note that I knew a few words already even before starting Anki because I studied both Genki textbooks for about a year to get a good grasp on grammar before I started really getting into things. Can I pick up the pitch accent of words I already know through immersion as well once my ability to recognize pitch accent has properly developed? One more thing I should mention is that I'm planning on learning words entirely from the Core 2K/6K deck until I reach about 2,000 words, and then I'll switch entirely to making my own cards through sentence mining using Migaku. Would that also be a good idea?

      I have a series on learning Japanese that you can find in the description of this video where I answer most of these questions. But yes, its fine to start making your own cards at 2000 c2k6k cards as long as you feel like it and will actually do it, I'd even recommend it over going for all the 6k first.

    My favorite channel is KUNさん, he mainly does a viewer participation minecraft server series that has so hilarious people in it. I swear I've gotten like over 30% of all my japanese immersion from that channel and related ones (he uploads 5 videos a day...). I started watching yuru genngo too after one of your previous videos and got super into to them recently, so thanks for that! Although I think you need to be at a certain level to realize how funny it is though unfortunetly.

      @@Livakivi I see… that’s similar to me. I love studying Japanese so much both because the language is really cool and because the process of learning is really satisfying. I had no interest in Japan before but now somehow learning Japanese has become one of the biggest parts of my life. 😵‍💫 I really can’t justify the amount of time and effort I’ve put into learning Japanese and when people ask me what I’m planning to do with Japanese I get kind of embarrassed but I enjoy it too much so I don’t know if I could stop even it’s a complete waste of time lol.

    • @Livakivi
      @Livakivi  3 місяці тому

      It requires quite a lot of existing knowledge of the language to infer if something was correct or wrong, something that becomes easier once you've watched a decent amount of UA-cam already and have a comfortable enough vocabulary base to for sentence mining, like 3000 to 8000 words.
